The movie showed a single forger but actually there were three forgers. One of the forgers was an American named John Welles from Ponchatoula, La. John was not one of the escapees. After the war John and his wife Shirley owned and ran a popular beach in our area that I went to when I was a child in the 60's. While at his house years later I wandered into his office and learned his story from the documents hanging on his wall and a local newspaper article. He had commendations from every President during my lifetime starting with Truman. John passed away a few years ago in his 90's. I don't think many locals know his backstory.

Soon the fulfillment of Isaiah 2: 4 will take place:
He will render judgment among the nations and set matters straight respecting many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they learn war anymore.
We will enjoy absolute peace, for all the tragical events will be forgotten, according to Isaiah 65: 17:
For look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be called to mind, Nor will they come up into the heart.
And there is more.

While serving with the US military in Germany in 1962, I was assigned to a detachment in the vicinity of the German movie studio, Bavaria Films. During filming of The Great Escape we would hear small arms fire and an occasional explosion.
After watching this video The True Story. , I can appreciate the enormous sacrifices made by the allied prisoners. The Hollywood version. if you read the fine print, as in most productions only have the disclaimer, based on true events. Documentaries they ain't.

Cruel, cold-blooded, sickening, yes. But I can't work up outrage. Why is it fine to kill thousands of soldiers on the battlefield but not these few heroic figures? It's said that it's against the 'rules of war' to kill unarmed prisoners. But the moment these men put on civilian clothes they were no longer soldiers and became enemy spies. I'm not minimizing what they accomplished. They took thousands of German soldiers out of the field. But I'm not surprised by the reaction.

I had an English friend I met in Toronto back in the day. He spent time in the cooler in a cell next to Roger Bushell at one time. He became too sick to be a part of the Great Escape. He was a wireless/nose gunner in Wellingtons in the RAF and became a POW when his aircraft ran low on fuel over Holland in 1941. They crash landed at night and all survived. Capture was early the next morning. He told me the Germans really did say, For you ze war is over!

& may I emphasize to the already many comments that amongst the list of murdered men shown in this documentary were the troops from other Allied & Commonwealth countries. For without doubt without them Britain would not have won the Second Word War (which also applies to the First World War, to which I am eternally thankful to them.

The order from the insane leader was wrong. All who received it should have said no. The truth here was the men did what they were supposed to do. They tried. In trying they used up millions of man hours for the German Army at a time when the Allies needed the distraction.

My Dad, a POW in Birma. He was truely a soldier who knew of all sides to be human. Still I don't think we Brittish should view or have an opinion on the Enemy because Brittain is also an enemy of many others. I think this is a real problem for Brittain.

This still doesnt change the facts that there are 49 million kangaroos in Australia and 3. 5 million people in Wales which means if kangaroos were to invade Wales each person will have to fight 14 kangaroos.

The Great Escape with Steve McQueen (a movie that recreated actual events) is one of my favorite movies. This documentary is about what happened AFTER The Great Escape.

Donald Peasance, who played the forger in the movie, was actually a POW private during WW2. He said there was no way he would have tried to escape. It was very dangerous.

I read the book in 1975 when I was a sophomore in high school. It sure was better than the movie. Glad to see the documentary agrees with the book. What heroes!
