One of history's greatest test pilots, Capt. Eric Winkle Brown recounts his many adventures flying dangerous aircraft and setting aviation records MarsFKA: 2: 40 Looks very much like Manfred Von Richthofen.
25: 08 In the background; the personal aircraft of Roland Beamont, when he commanded a Tempest Wing. An operational pilot, he was also one of Hawker's chief test pilots and was an advocate for keeping the trouble-laden Typhoon operational in its early days, when structural and engine problems were killing more pilots that the Luftwaffe was. Beamont could see the Typhoon's potential, especially as, at that time, the RAF lacked a 400 mph fighter that could match the FW 190 at low altitude, the Typhoon turned out to be superior in speed and manoeuvrability to the 190

Eric Brown. bit of a humdrum sounding name. maybe an insurance clerk, or a librarian, and yet it belonged to a man, a catalogue of whose life makes almost unbelievable reading, but that said he was still a modest man who also happened to be the quintessential cool, professional, understated, world renowned expert on all things regarding practical aeronautics. Good grief! We thank God that such a man lived amongst us! The greatest of respects to your memory Winkle! (Though it would do him even more honour if the poster could get the service he was a part of correct)

I was in the RAF as ground crew from 70 until 80. I had a few great friends that had transfered from the Royal Navy. There was always a gentle Rivalry between the two services. This man was a legend for sure but one thing I will say. He deserves better than you calling him An RAF Ace in the title. Correct it please and give him the honour he deserves. He was a Royal Naval Fleet Air Arm Hero and would be most highly displeased that you did not call him so.

My father was a pilot in the Royal Canadian Airforce during WWII who trained pilots and now watching this tribute to Captain Eric Brown we can see how wars are won by people who have got it in their heads that they can do whatever it is they're asked to do. And they will go and fight for freedom at any cost. We owe my father and Eric Brown's generation the freedoms we all enjoy today.

Typical.
Timeline broadcast a documentary about this man's incredible life and they describe him as an RAF pilot.
Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown was a NAVAL aviator. He served with distinction in the Royal Navy yet there seems to be an overwhelming bias in Great Britain to describe everything to do with flying to the RAF and ignore the achievements of the Royal Navy.

Udet, an alcoholic, was appointed to an important position in developing future aircraft. His appointment was to interfere in so much very important work for which he might have interest in but his alcoholic mind could never resolve. He failed and his failures helped the Allies. Aircraft available, were kept from success by his befuddled mind.

In the U. K. the government used the F111 as an excuse to not go ahead with the TSR2, they were supposedly going to buy it instead. Due to delays, supposedly, they never did. The non completion of the TSR2 program like that of the Avro Arrow in Canada has been a sore point ever since. The TSR2 would have been a great plane.

I re-watched the Vampire landing at about 44: 20. A good demonstration of skill was that when the stern of the carrier started to drop, Brown dropped the Vampire in synchronisation. It looked like he read the vertical oscillation of the stern, and foresaw just what was needed.

What a great documentary to find.
The men of WWII considered themselves dead when they started and by the grace of God survived until it was over. Then they lived a full life for their friends who didnt come home.
We owe them for our freedom today.

What an absolutely incredible documentary of a truly one-of-a-kind man. Amazing how one man can have such an immense impact on history, what an era to have lived through, thank you for your service. Rip in peace sir, youll surely not be forgotten.

After becoming the most inspiring figure in my life I went on to give a school assembly to my peers on the achievements of this man and where they have left us today. Perhaps his story should be made compulsory viewing/reading in schools today.

This man was, and is, a true legend. He still holds numerous world records for flying. I bought his autobiography a few years back (Wings on My Sleeve) definitely recommended reading - do yourself a favour and buy it, it is a tremendous read.

What an amazing man. Am in awe and agog at everything he achieved, (and not just during WW2) but to him was pretty much just another day at the office. A proper hero. They really did break the mould with him. Thank you Sir.

What a pleasure to chance into this program. I have had Capt. Browns book the Wings of the Luftwaffe since the 80s and simply loved it, helped me in my own work. He was a truly great man, passed away at 97 just 5 years ago.

Okay. Why did Chuck Yeager think so little of this man. Eric Winkle Brown is the text book definition of Badass. In fact I think if you were to look up the word badass, in a dictionary. I would say Eric Winkle Brown.

What I don't understand is how captain Eric winkle brown died in 2016 and this was made/released in 2018? But still, what a man, what i would give to ever have had the chance to meet this legend
reply

I Love War stories!
I dont know what the rest of his life held.
But God had a plan for this mans life.
Way way to close to death way way to many times. And survived.
IMHO.

reply

Dang, what a bigger hero than 99% of my other heroes. Where's all the movies about this Legend? He's as or more famous and made as many or more achievements as Gen Chuck Yeager.
reply

Ive watched this shaking my head the whole way through. This man was an incredible human being who did and saw incredible things. Rest easy Sir.
reply

deck landing was quite a hazardous business! That's understatement, what a legend, what a life, makes you so proud to come from the same planet as Eric.
