In 1973, Syria launched a surprise attack against Israel -- culminating in a great standoff at the Valley of Tears. How did a few outnumbered tanks hold off an enemy of overwhelming size?

Oooo. Had those two Syrian armored brigade commanders pushed forward their initiative, for, as it was pointed out in this video, the ONLY THING standing in their way of seizing the aforementioned bridges, was Israeli infantry. And, anyone who served knows infantry cannot stand up to armor, save they have anti-tank munitions. Even then, the odds were in favor of the Syrians. They should've seized those bridges and, oooooooo. Who knows what they would've done next!
Eesssshhhhh!
I shudder at thinking about it, what MIGHT'VE happened HAD they NOT rested and, handed Israel the victory!

You presented this war as a merely territorial dispute. This is far from the truth.
BEFORE the 1967 war, when the Golan heights were under Syrian control (with only army bases and no civilian population, they bombarded the Israeli Kibutzim, that sat to the foot of the heights, daily. Conquering the heights from the Syrians in the 67 war was first of all to prevent that bombardment, so they can never do it again.
So this has nothing to do with a territorial dispute.
And since the 1973 war, many villages and farms, as well as a city, were built there.

Little did the syrians know the Israelis had disguised some of their tanks but in actuality were specialized anti-tank and anti-aircraft Javelin type system that was highly responsible for the majority of the Syrian tank deaths and it was also highly classified. Very clever disguising a vastly versatile system as something smaller and less significant. The syrians were doomed before the mission was even started.

Occupied Aram, currently called Syria, ia an Arab colony of lands belonging to the Kurds, Judeans, Aramaeans, Druze. Syria was a colonial construct by thr English & French in the Sykes Picot Agreement. It should be dismantled.
The Golan has been a part of Israel since ancient times as mentioned in the Torah, Talmud and is borne out in archaeology in sites like Katzrin, Susita, Hamat Gader, Yahudiyya, Gamla etc.

If Golan heights will not be returned to Syria, I'm afraid that there will be no peace dude! if they return the Golan heights to Syria there will still no peace because the only peace you knew is the annihilation of Israel. So try and get it, shed more blood until you learn how to coexist with them.
reply

I dare to say there will not be peace in the middle east if Golan heights won't be returned to Syria
Damm there won't be peace until Syria stops the madness it has inside the country. Golan heights are no more an excuse for no peace. Hate to say but that History expert isn't an expert at all -_-

my father did not fight in this specific battle but he did in others. he was among those who breached syria and to egypt. he saw many of his friends die brutally and painfully.
these wins came with a cost, and should not be celebrated. its best to make sure it never happens again.

Over 1k tanks and they still couldn't take tiny Golan. That's embarrassing. Goes to show that all the numbers in the world won't make up for not having good tactics and good training. The IDF clearly outclassed them. The Egyptians were far more competent than Syria.

LoL. in 2006 hezbollah got there revenge and mascaraed the Zionist tanks and the israeli ground forces with out using any reserve troops. such sweet revenge.
From the irish jews of ireland to our palistine brothers and sisters. Bonna na croin, Bonna na croin.

The best tank around today is the Israeli Merkava which has all the latest technology (shared with the US) and was built with protection of the people inside in mind. The engine is in the FRONT of the tank which gives an added layer of steel.

Well documented and factual video. Too bad the comments are littered with Zionist ideology. The problem is not one of Israelis vs Arabs, its exactly of the Zionist belief of a right to land that has always been home to Jews and Arabs alike.
reply

Who cares if Syria concedes Golan Hights or not. It belongs to Israel. The best what Syria can do is to forget about it and try to live in peace. It seems the arabs haven't learned the lesson. If Syria try again Damascus will fall to IDF.
reply

David versus Goliath. And we all know who won. The Golan Heights if returned or taken back to Syria will be very dangerous strategically for Israel. It will remain with Israel as long as GOD permits it to be. And GOD be with you Israel.

You mean the American tank defense of the valley of tears. These people are incapable of defending themselves if everybody they messed with attacked them. They start fights that they can't win and then call on America for aid.

I am just sorry people think lands are always more important than life - is there no way to co operate & co exist? Everyone is human regardless of the religion or any other factor. Every life human animal is important.
reply

You can have all the armour in the world.
But it's the men in them you've got to rely on. They didn't have the mentality or the courage in them.
The Israeli's were fighting for their country. Enough said.

reply

Of course the Israeli won the battle and killed all the tanks and won the war and didn't get a single scratch and the Syrians begged them to take their land and keep them alive. the same silly israelis stories
reply

if they will return to Golan some day, their cities will be blasted with nukes. war tactics is changing, don't wish that the David's sling is still made of stone. nowadays, it's more powerful than your wife!
reply

Epic performance by the IDF and the mighty Centurion. The Israelis deserve full RESPECT for their tenacity and courage whilst facing extremely heavy odds. Professionalism, skill and sheer guts won the day.
reply
