Charles I was a tragic victim of the belief in the divine right of kings. Because of this belief he could make neither politics nor war with only worldly goals in mind, adjusting his conduct to the reality of military defeat and diminishing influence in the first phase of the civil war. His head was inevitably lost to a historically outdated ideology even before he was beheaded. His defense speech only confirmed that a political body of the King could only be considered dead by Parliament. Killing the king's other body no longer made any difference.

For all its Fortifications, Bristol was nigh on Impossible to Hold, Manning the Citadel, 12 Forts and 5 Miles of Curtain Walls would require the full Support of the Locals and at least 12k Soldiers.

Charles was a thief, criminal, tyrant and a murderer. He was much more an enemy of the people of England than Cromwell ever was.

A 'man of blood', a tyrant who waged war upon the citizens he swore to protect in his coronation oath. Off with his head!
