You are wrong when you say that It was not the sport of animal lovers. Its more complicated than that. Bear baiting is basically tied to hunting dog work. Before guns you hunted large game with dogs and spears, its a show in that form and people gamble on it and stuff, but the people with the dogs were hunters. dog fighting same thing.
Rooster fighting is just a pass time though, there is no utility to it. everyone had chickens, roosters are loud and aggressive you have to kill extra roosters anyway so instead people would fight them. But there are many many many interviews with rooster fighters online, its not they they don't love their chicken. To be good at rooster fighting you have to take care of them and know alot about them. humans have been fighting roosters the entire time we have been keeping chickes, for thousands of years. it really is deeper than a bunch of cartoonishly evil people that like watching animals die.
I worked in dog sled racing and now i see how messed up animal racing is, dog sled racing really is alot like dog fighting. horse racing is filled to the brim with messed up crap and horses die ALL THE TIME.
But no, when you say that rooster fighting and bear baiting weren't the sport of animal lovers you are wrong. Its easy to see something like that and really gain an appreciation for the abilities of the animals. This is the result of love for the the animals, its just misguided and archaic. its easy for us to look back at that NOW and label it as cruel, but that wasn't the case back then. Just like most people today don't see the issues in animal racing, it will be viewed in history as a cruel and pointless activity.

Everyone commenting about all of the free time peasants enjoyed must be city-bred AF. Anyone raised on a farm could tell you that there are a lot of things that need doing outside of the planting and harvesting. There's always some task that needed to be done six months ago, something that needs to be fixed, or some chore that needs doing. I can't even imagine how shit it must have been to have to do all of that, with no powered equipment, and then brew your own beer, bake your own bread, tend to your garden, spin your own linen and wool, make your own clothes, and then pay the priest to bury the second kid you've lost to some random illness in the last five four years. Oh, and then some robber knight and his band of cut throats decides to murder you and a few of your neighbors for kicks or whatever meagre stores you have hidden in your outbuildings.

They had much more time to do whatever they wanted to. They worked to plant and harvest the crops. Didnt do much during the winter though, except try to keep warm, and find enough to eat. The problem with all that time is most of the battles and fighting was done during the summer. ( the campaign season) Being a peasant for your lord was a problem during the summer if the king, and/or lord wanted or needed you to go to battle. Your in fairly good shape, but your usually not trained or equipped very well. This is ok if your fighting against other peasants, but not good if your up against a professional army. Or against well trained, or even just trained people. If you survive the battle(s) your doing good. If your maimed you usually get some compensation, but it wont be a lot. But you dont work as many days.

Only working 150 days a year? No chance. My wife was born in a village in Burgos in 1950 where not that much changed for centuries. Everyone had their vegetable garden and pieces of land here and there depending on family inheritances. Her father was a shepherd and like most people you might not have had to work but in practice you had to be attending your animals, chickens, and crops. Working life was continuous despite time to see attractions. Working less than modern Americans? Sorry, that's simply unintelligent.

I feel like sports or pastimes are more likely to be invented in environments where the population of people live by these principles:
1. have a sense of community.
2. who have nothing better to do.
3. who aren't tied down with social norms/hiarchy or technology
4. people who are bored enough to be creative
5. people who still have a childlike wonder for the fun that life can bring
6. People who have a healthy competitive spirit

I was extremely surprised to find out that the peasants had so much free time we always think of the peasants as having to work long hard hours 12 months a year the other surprising fact was that they were required to learn archery I thought maybe only the King's Men could be archers so this really surprised me that the common Man would be a precision Archer

We still play skittles where im from except the rules are a bit different in our rules its a 1 v 1 game were you stand in front of youre pins and take turns throwing foam balls at each-others pins, you can defend youre pins but they are spread out so you have to run back and forth

Haha water jousting sounds like something from jackass or American gladiators or the old kids show double dare lol and the peasants not only ate better than us and did actual work they used their creativity and I'd say were smarter than we give them credit for

Peasants or serfs could not leave the land aka plantation where they worked. If they ever did leave the plantation, they needed permission from their lord or master. In most cases, the peasants never left and died on the land which they worked.

They did a lot of hard labour, its crazy that they had the energy to play games after all that. I guess some days could have been better than other days or kids didn't have to do as much so they might have gotten time to play from this.

When I visited England on vacation I ended up at a small festival in a small town and played a game of skittles and won a tin of cookies, it was a lot of fun. English folks are alright in my book.
