The Rise and Catastrophic Fall of Marie De Medici

France was a country torn apart by years of religious and civil wars when Marie de Medici married King Henri IV in 1600. It was one of the unhappiest royal marriages of all time. Desperate for power, she watched from behind the scenes for years while her husband tried to control a country that was intent on destroying itself from within - she watched, and waited for her moment to strike. After 10 years of marriage, she was finally crowned Queen of France in her own right. The very next day her husband was conveniently murdered by a fanatical priest and Marie took control of the kingdom for herself

Just finished the video, hours later lol. So basically. This woman literally BIRTHED multiple Kings/Queens, a Duchess, all her kids are royalty & rich. yet she ended up basically poor and living off someone? That's extremely sad. Even if she was a VERY annoying mother (which it sounds like) she still deserved WAY better than how she ended up, based on the simple fact she birthed multiple royalty. who all went on to lead multiple countries & millions of people. Her children should be ashamed but considering those days, i bet they weren't.

I took French all throughout high school and my time in college. Including learning the language we were taught French history, and when it comes to the Medicis in France its Cathrine de Medici? Yes Marie de Medici? No The Medici family went from Florentine bankers to incredibly wealthy politicians, statesmen, popes and royalty through marriage. Hes not wrong in saying that the Medici women were known for two things, a huge dowry and good child bearers.

I don't understand them building palaces and castles back then? I mean it could take a decade to finish one place, and back then the life expectancy was rather low; so where's the logic in doing such a project? They likely would be dead before it was complete. Can you do a video on this topic?

How was the mother born in 1575, but then 25 years later ( in 1600) her daughter is married and 1 year later is able to have children for the king. how does that make sense? They would have both been like 12 when they had their first kid. But that's not said.

Man, I've been binging the hell out of these videos, but hearing about Rubens made me think if there is any kind of weird history of artists and if there is please make some art related content, it would be interesting to listen to

OK, I can understand banishing her. She sounds like a self absorbed person and a pretty awful mom. And she deserved to live in reduced circumstances but abandoning her to the life of a beggar? That seems pretty harsh

The portrait on the thumbnail is not Maria De Medici Queen but instead is Maria di cosimo de medici, frist daughter of Cosimo Primo De medici. She died at 17 years old. The portrait is by Agnolo Bronzino.

Wow! Marie's son, the King sure through her a curb ball when he chose the Cardinal over her, and had her exiled to some obscure place in Italy. She thinking he would dismiss the Cardinal from Court.

What an interesting story. It looks like she was behind her husband's murder, to grab power for herself. Then she plotted for the rest of her life. Well done to her son for exiling her.

What went wrong for Marie? You asked, her son Louis should have put her to the sword by paid hands like they did in Rome.

The pronunciation of French names is a disruption and leads to misunderstandings of the content. Why not ask French speakers?
