How Victorian-Era Britons Hired Child Gangs to Do Their Bidding

In the 19th century, child labor was legal, and thousands of children were sequestered into mines and factories. The life of a child worker was grueling, and often short. Many were forced to begin working before they were 10 years old, as jobs like chimney sweeping required children who could fit into small places. While working conditions left much to be desired, at least the children were making money on the up and up; the same cannot be said for the gangs of child criminals who plagued England

My husband and I were both street kid's as in we were homeless, he for much of his entire life. In fact that is where I first met him as the rule was the older kid's take care of the younger kids and I'm 4yrs older. I always made sure to feed and clothe the youngest children first, it's a hard life but we do take care of our own. I owe my life to my now husband as he pulled bullets from me after I was injured in the cross fire of a gang fight. I never thought the boy I gave my food portion up for, an extra blanket and a book of Poe's stories would spend his adult life tracking me down and make the world's best and most loyal husband and father.
We were the unseen or forgotten that slipped thru the cracks of life. Please don't ask about CPS as 99% of kid's ran away from them because it was a helluva lot safer on the streets then in CPS. and I'm not being romantic about the streets at all. So many horrible things happened but we cared for our own and did the very best we could.

6: 15 Unlike the socialists who wants the state to do the stealing for them while they can sit and relax, un-confronted with the labor of stealing and the moral issues, this line of thought prompts the individual to take action and steal for him or her self, weather it be for justice and survival, maintaining the individual responsibility to steal for survival or justice as opposed to relocating that responsibility to the state. Reminds me of illegalism. This could be a forerunner for that eraly 1900s movement of illegalism.

3: 58 The OUTBACK Restaurant's Blooming Onion has nothing at all to do with Australia - it is entirely an American invention not seen or even heard of in Australia.
In fact The OUTBACK Restaurant has nothing at all to do with Australia other than the name - its ALL USA USA USA American cuisine. lol
FUN FACTS: Foster's beer in those big cans are not even available in Australia and certainly they wouldn't call it an 'oil can' because in Australia oil was never ever sold oil in 'quart' (liter) cans.

After my father died, I was talking to one of his sisters. I knew that my dad had worked in the coal mines of West Virginia. Dad never talked about it. My aunt told me that he had started as a white mule at the age of 12. I had taught my history students about the practice of using children to pull coal carts in and out of the mines but I had no idea that my dad was one. It goes along ways the explaining his instance on my brother and I would go to college.

I mean, I'm here in Aus cause my ancestors were mostly a bunch of 3/4-starved thieves. Death by starvation vs death by poorhouse vs death by hanging vs a one way trip to a strange and probably deadly new continent? I think my ancestors did the best with their circumstances.
But then again, some of my ancestor's relatives later began holding up banks and burning mortgages on the new continent, and I can't blame them either.

Anyone familiar with the American gang scene knows this tradition is VERY much alive and well. Syndicates (bloods, crips, etc) recruit local youth gangs to fight and deal on their behalf. It keeps the adults hands clean and they justify it by pointing to the lower sentence a kid will get (yes they are absolute shitbags)

Can we get a weird history on compulsory education. The evolution of the stages of life, toddlers, children, preteens, teens, young adults and how advertisers catered to them.
Can we also get one on the naming of generations. The Greatest Generation, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z

What do you mean how Victorian era britons paid child gangs to do things, if you threw a penny between two Victorian children theyd fight to the death for it you could probably get Victorian children to do just about anything for a couple coins

I come from the East End of London and am continually mistaken for an Australian, particularly by Americans.
The reason for that is most of the convict who ended up in the penal colonies came from the East End and took the accent with them.

It really strikes me that in order for a few to have such a disproportionate amount of the world's wealth, it is necessary to exploit SOMEONE. Seems the exploited are never gone. Just different in different places and times.

Y. B. I. (Young Boys Incorporated to name JUST one gang, in just ONE city. anyone?
B. K. 's, Earl Flynn's, Pony Down to name a few others to illustrate this 'phenomenon ' isn't a thing of the (distant) past.

I always think of Oliver when I hear these stories about the child gangs. Of course it far from it probably actually worse. Putting young children to work in a factory how terrible

Sent off to Australia since that is what happened to my ex-slave ancestors. Then that grandchild child was born in England and sent to Canada as part of the 'home child' scheme.

Okay now im suspish. I was just telling my mom about how i would love to have had a young Joey Coco Diaz at my disposal to get shit done for me. And you come out with this.
reply

I have searched where the children were sent and I have not found anything about Australia, instead a lot of information that they were sent to Canada specifically Toronto.

A Vaccine mandate in 1870 was acceptable, now if you support Vaccines (let alone a mandate) youre a fascist according to the hard right, at least in America thats the case.

And now were going backwards. Learning to read, write and do math well is somehow viewed as racist. Were going no where good with that thought process.

Servant with sheep teeth: You Majesty! What should we do about all the starving children working in the coal mines?
Queen Victoria: NOTHING!

reply

Nothing like hanging out at the Korova Milk bar with the Droogs, and then a bit of the ole in and out ultra violence. Right, right!
