Cortez was a really bad guy.
I'm still glad that there is not a major religion that's all about human sacrifice and cannibalism controlling large portions of south America today though.
One of the reasons why the Aztec Empire fell is because they had a lot of enemies in the tribes around them.
These tribes were angry about generations of people being forced to pay tribute to the Azetcs.
Tribute to the Aztecs translates into (give me people to throw on the alter and rip the hearts out of now or Ill burn down your village)
So basically what I'm trying to say is this.
Don't feel to bad for the Aztecs folks.
They were barbarians in the truest since of the word.

I like how we're supposed to see the Aztecs as innocent victims when they were just as brutal as the Spanish. They were colonizing and subjugating other peoples as well, practicing ritual human sacrifice and cannibalism but yeah they were the good guys lol. There's no reason to think that had the Aztec empire continued they would not have become a seafaring civilization and then traveled the world doing the exact same thing as Spain. We're all human beings and we all possess the same motivations and potential for astonishing cruelty.

Speculation of something Hernan Cortes might have said to Native Americans (translated into English):
Unlike you savages we don't partake in cannibalism or human sacrifice. Now eat the body and blood of Christ or we'll burn you at the stake! Even if you do eat the body and bloody of Christ we will enslave you anyway! If you don't bring us enough gold we will chop off your hands!

Yeah Cortez wasn t a nice guy, but neither were the Aztecs he killed. The reason why so many native tribes made short-sighted deals with the Spanish is because of how ruthless the Aztec were. They enslaved tribe after tribe. Those who weren t enslaved were ritualistically sacrificed to their gods. Cortez did Mexico a favor by wiping them out.

11: 21 La Malinche was a woman they met east of Tenochtitlan on their way there who acted as a guide, liaison, and translator - she wasn't Aztec but was part of one of their main rival tribes/city states. Today in Mexico you might get called a Malinche if someone thinks you've acted like a traitor (like Benedict Arnold, Judas, etc.

1: 26 It is interesting how certain phrases and practices by parents are commonly use in private even for families that are isolated from each other.
For example I'll turn this car around! , I'll give you something to cry about! , Suck it up. , Because I said so!

I always thought Pizarro was more brutal. He went out of his way to keep missionaries out because he didn t want anything to stop the killing, specifically, and converting the people meant you couldn t just bump them off anymore. Cortes at least made a few alliances.

0: 53 After Christopher Columbus went to the Americas, they started to use the terms New World and Old World for parts of the world.
Tomatoes are a New World food as they are native to the Americas and were not known in Europe before the Columbus's arrival.

The aztec was not a thriving empire, when the Spanish arrived it was already heavily decayed and every other tribe hated them. That is why 500 famished sailors could conquered an empire. they had 10. 000 native allies with them because the Aztecs sucked.

10: 13 Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lawrence are close friends.
Taylor Swift has a song called The Archer, which might be based off of Lawrence's character in The Hunger Games or maybe because there Swift is a Sagittarius (which is Latin for archer.

2: 07 Something similar was done for the HMS Bounty, an important mutiny that was later made into a film Mutiny On The Bounty (1935.
The HMS Bounty was burned while being moored at Pitcairn Island so the fellow mutineers could not leave.

Yeah Cortez did horrible things. He also was a man you took initiative and when you compare him to other historical figures who did horrible things like Napoleon, Hannibal, & Kublai Khan Crotez is not any worst.

About converting to christianity. Thanks to that human sacrifices were over, slavery was eliminated in 1542 and priests taught natives to read and write. Very evil I know.

FACT CHECK: The Spanish didn't create colonies but viceroyalties and the habitants of those viceroyalties had the same rights and laws as Spanish subjects of the crown.

I wonder how the Spanish educational system handles these histories. Do they act duly ashamed like Germany and the Nazis, or do they whitewash it like the US?
