7 Most Controversial Reality Shows In TV History

These days, when people think of reality TV, shows like The Bachelor and Love is Blind typically come to mind. The genre is associated with heightened interpersonal drama - often centering around romance, competition, or lifestyles that are slightly out of the ordinary - yet there's been a slew of far more controversial reality shows in TV history. These dark stains on the genre are largely forgotten due to low ratings, early cancelations, and in some cases being so controversial that they never aired at all. While there are plenty of problematic reality shows in recent years, a good chunk of the most baffling and bizarre installments were dreamt up in the early aughts. It’s pretty sad how 19 kids and counting ended, I used to watch every episode of the show with my mom, who was also a Baptist like the family was, she adored it and had it on every single day, she used that show to help her figure out how to raise her kids, then it got dark. It’s scary how many people were influenced by that show, I know my childhood was, now we see it was all a lie, or worse the complete truth of what happens in the fundamentalist structure, finding that the people in charge are much more sinful and disgusting than anyone. I hope those kids are okay now, I hope they get out of bill gothard’s monstrous hold on children and women. I grew up in the same environment, I’m just glad he got caught, after that we didn’t watch the show again, didn’t talk about it. Scary.
There’s a really good documentary that was popular for a little bit called shiny happy people and it goes into detail how the religion works and all the abuse these kids suffered. I know I was one of the lucky ones, I hope the rest comes to light. There’s a lot of darkness in the house of god.

The show that essentially started the modern reality TV genre, _Expedition: Robinson_ (the original Swedish version of _Survivor_ ) created controversy right out of the gate. The first person to be voted off the island was so devastated when he watched the premiere episode and saw the other contestants explain why they voted on him that he killed himself. They changed the format slightly and moved on.

3: 20 At a bar in Lincoln, Nebraska, I onced asked a girl what her talents were and she replied I give awesome blowjobs.
Instinctively I knew that something was up as no girl I have ever met has been so forward like that in public.
Sure enough, the next time I saw her it was a guy dressed up like a girl, which was extremely believable with a couple of drinks and dim lights.

0: 14 A co-worker of mine in Tempe, Arizona told me about a Balloon Party where the house was filled with balloons for pleasure.
I told her I don't get it. (truly had no idea what she was getting it.
She told me for the pleasure for rubbing them and, after being totally shocked, that was the first time I heard of unusual fetishes like that.

Toddlers And Tiaras was just plain creepy. The only bright spot was a mom who didn't glam up her daughter. It was just plain creepy seeing grown men in the pageant audiences whistling and wolf calling at little girls barely out of diapers. Dudes like that need to be put on a list and watched very closely.

I'm glad I never got into so-called reality shows. First off, how real is it with cameras, sound systems, directors and producers watching everything Why didn't you cover Swamp People or Duck Dynasty at least they are real people.

Honestly will never understand why so many woman love the prince so much. Hes not that attractive, hes very unintelligent, hes not very funny and without being a royal hed be super boring. Also hes extremely inbred which is gross

What about Playing it Straight It was a gender swapped version of boy meets boy. The guys went overboard trying to out ALPHA each other, and one guy ended up getting his arm snapped in half during an arm wrestling contest.

I remember one that did not last long. It was couples going on and the spouse took a lie detector test about whether they were cheating it as brutal. You can see the pain as they exposed all their secrets.

Toddlers & Tiaras was the worst reality show that ever existed, for all the right and wrong reasons. I've only seen 1 episode and literally felt like vomiting at the exploitation of children.

Mama June had her own show with her daughters on a different network and that ran for several years after Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. I think it may still be running with just her daughters.

That Whose your Daddy show would've been amazing if they found 8 guys that actually hooked up with her mom and revealed who her actual father was to both at the same time.

Sometimes I think the boomers need to remember who was in charge of TV during this time and stop accusing younger generations of being the reason people are so screwed up.

You missed Kid Nation. A pioneer town ran only by children with very few adults around. The producers were accused of child endangerment and child labor violations

I remember 'There's Something About Miriam' and 'Who WIll Marry Harry' but the cruelest was 'Toddlers in Tiaras, ' frankly some of these were disgusting.

I would add MILF Manor to the list. Literally, these women are dating and sleeping with each others’ sons. It’s like Love Island, but super creepy.

Fun fact: Miriam Rivera did some transgender porn scenes, though I'm not sure if they were filmed before or after she filmed the reality show
