What if the Handmaid's Tale Actually Happened? Gridball: I'd pitch an alternative in the superpower element, based on the long-forgotten fact that at the time of the Suez crisis in the 1950s, the UK and France [two nations that have long held animosity towards eachother] were so concerned at the loss of their place among the superpowers that they seriously considered uniting as one nation. The leaders were up for it but knew they couldn't sell it to their people. So, in an age when the US goes fundamentalist, is it such a stretch to see the UK, France, and Germany rally the idea of a true federal United States of Europe? The 90s was a very pro-European era, which paved the way for the Euro and the USE concept came within touching distance but for the British skeptics. This was due to the UK feeling more connected to the USA than Europe [the so-called special relationship] With it gone, the UK is quick to distance itself from American thinking because, primarily there would be a British chapter of the sons of Jacob, just vastly weaker. The UK turns to Europe and the prospect of an Anglo/German/French-led USE to fill the superpower void is too great to turn down. Especially with London being its financial hub and the UK able to bring Australia, Canada, and New Zealand along for the ride in a commonwealth kind of trade and military unity replacing NATO. Indeed the creation of the USE would create a potential new iron curtain as Canada, Mexico, and [going by the Tv show, Texas delightedly agree to as much of a USE presence as they can get on their soil.

You know Canada has there own crazy christian party in real life. It would be interesting if this chemical was also used in Canada causing a similar problem in Ontario and Quebec which would allow the CHP to take control
Its would also be interesting to see if the chp became more radical to match gilead or would be significantly less cruel. Considering that there already pretty screwed up now my bets on the first option but, considering the chp is for all sects of christianity and not racist maybe other christians and black people would flee there instead.

This book cracks me up. Its supposed to be some female empowerment story, yet the protagonist arguably does nothing of her own volition. Whatever big changing events happen are all caused by men either failing or taking charge. Except for maybe one situation, she is completely incapable of doing anything. The best part is feminists laud this book, yet it directly highlights the joke that is feminism.

This novel is ridiculous. There is absolutely no way any sort of Christian group will take over America. The only real threat is Washington DC. They have already subjugated us more than people realize.
Do you really think the greatest threat to America is a bunch of Mennonites? Un-pasteurized milk! Oh noooo!

I disagree with your characterization of the Sons of Gilead as fundamentalist Christianity. If anything, they are a restorationist branch, akin to Latter Day Saints or Jehovah's Witnesses, but even Margaret Atwood has said she wouldn't regard the religion of Gilead as Christianity.

I've never read the book, but if Gilead used the Dakotas as reservations for black people, they never conquered the southern states.
It would simply not be logistically possible to move the black population of the south to the Dakotas in any reasonable length of time.

So for the names of the possible others countrys in former USA territory the Normans country would probably be Deseret and for the Baptists the CSA would probably make a return do to the majority of states in The Baptists Territory being members of the long dead CSA

I'm really surprised that Gilead is at war with Baptists, since many of the ones in Appalachia are fundamentalist and their beliefs are in line with the leaders of Gilead and their supporters. I haven't read the book in years and just started watching the show.

Wouldn't the military just take them out if they tried? Obviously, the January 6th insurrection hadn't happened when this was made. Seems you can invade the Capitol with little opposition if you're white, uneducated, and part of the trump GOP cult.

It's definitely an alternate history, but the book is the only version to be set in the future. In the TV adaptation, the takeover happened in 2014, and it's 2017 by the time the series starts (which was the year it aired, too.
