I think one of the biggest underpinning themes of the Warcraft universe as a whole and more specifically World of Warcraft is its discussions and metaphors surrounding free will.
It is the single most important part of being an adventurer; the gift to choose, and to go wherever the adventure takes us. To choose to take on the next great threat and forge legacies for ourselves as well as safeguard the people we love. Adventurers choose to be what they are for any number of reasons, but the point is that they choose.
It's hard to see this subject not being important to the emotional throughline of WoW. Here you have Illidan and Arthas, the dichotomy between free will being perfectly clear and apparent. You have Arthas, a man who sought power and was subjugated by the Lich King/Ner'zhul. His decision to rampage unchecked through the entire planet was not of his own free will, he was being unduly influenced by Frostmourne and Ner'zhul. Then you have Illidan, a man who is forced to take up this mantle for the good of everyone he cares about, and even people he does not know. Nothing about Illidan's life was anything he wanted, and yet, he chose to do it anyways.
Arthas was forced into becoming a monstrosity, and Illidan chose to become a monstrosity. It says everything that need be said about who they are, and why they're such great characters.
We see it time and again throughout Warcraft. The power to choose is our single most important tool as characters within this universe.
Which is why I think the idea that the First Ones or the Titans or whatever forces at work in the universe taking away free will in order to create their -perfect- universe would be the single most effective emotional tether to the story that the game could possibly have.
Let's face is, we're coming up to the end of WoW. It's not going to last much longer, and when it does, their final chapter should be about adventurers fighting for the most treasured aspect of everyone's lives, the people who played the game, and the people in it: Self-determinism. The ability to choose.

They still did our boy Arthas dirty with that Jailer drivel, they scrapped that scene where Jaina and Uther talked about him in Icecrown and did this instead. I will probably never forgive that.
When all the souls were released from the sword, Uther should have got his soul back from the blade and learned what that soul knew and stopped himself from throwing Arthas down to the jailer.
Whatever happens after that who knows. But the game we got in shadowlands was not worthy of the name World of Warcraft.

Arthas and Illidan were two of my three favorites from WCIII. Kael'thas was the third. Such tragic lives. and poor Arthas finally saw some form of lucidity on death. while the other two did their best to find ways to rise above their circumstances. Even with their terrible choices, one after another, they were my favorites.

So atm we do not know about Illidan and if he is still living? I hope in the next story we go back to space maybe he gets a brand new power

Love that Illidan is constantly lectured on sacrifice, yet is constantly sacrificing more than anybody else. The irony is palpable

Arthas should have been redeemed or left the new Jailer or something instead of annihilated from existence.
