Hired by a man who buys and sells time, a young bodyguard is torn between serving her master and fighting for the people he ruins with his power. The Bargain by Eleonora Mignoli Connect with the Filmmakers: More About The Bargain: Cora is indentured in the service of Hue, the creator and owner of time-exchanging technology. She is alive thanks to Hue's monthly 'payments': on her own, she'd have only a few weeks left. She works as his bodyguard and assistant, extracting or injecting time from his clients. She is horrified by Hue's predatory deals, but complaining means breaching her contract. However, when a single mother of two falls victim to his extortion, Cora's leash finally snaps. She now has to choose between her future or the life of a stranger. The Bargain

Sci-fi short comments by Jan
Beware of spoilers!
Bargain by Eleonora Mignoli
Plot: Conversational drama about the value of life (literally. The plot leaves no holes, everything we need to know is there, story is closed well and it is combined with a twist.
Negatives: 1) one small from a logic point of view: if he would do such business, there would have to be more people with more weapons around him; 2) I think that the scene where she quits, the wording does not fit the acting, either she should have been more dramatic, or the words should be different
Positives: 1) I like that it is just few people talking, no action, techno-aspect is just as
it needs to be
Personal note: Good ol sci-fi: Oh no, I wish I would not watch that! :- )
Summary: Very good, leaves very bad feeling inside (and that is a good training for life. Similar to Final Offer in storytelling and setting.

I've seen this theme so much lately.
It'll never be a reality but a metaphor of how the working class are treated. I see and experience it on a daily basis.
We live in a right to work state, meaning its a right for any business to deny you employment and fire you for any reason they seem to find worthy in their own eyes as an offense.
We sell our time to live, we borrow money to eat, feed our kids and pay for medical expenses. We sell our kids to the IRS for a refund check.
I wish more people would wake up and look around. Most live blindly and ignorantly by choice. They feel they have no other option. I found that to be false.
I refuse to sell myself to any entity.

The thing is, if you are the only parent of this children and you don't know what happens to them after you die and who cares for them.
I mean taking the time of you children is not nice, but better they die 5 years earlier and have regular childhood and a chance of success in life because someone cared for them, than living 5 years longer, but maybe with social problems.
Also the first version could mean, that the child will have a better job and therfore more money for more time.
I maybe overestimate the impact of having parents instead of having the state care for you. Also english is not my mothertounge so you maybe don't get what I mean.

_We know this is happening! We didn't want to acknowledge it! This reality is now running over into our lives and we can no longer turn a blind eye. From Federal Reserve and digital currency upon us, to our Politicians that somehow keep getting selected to yet ANOTHER term, then making lawsthat are directed by unelected individuals. Lets be honest with ourselves, we have allowed this hegemony to run rampant and soon we will all have to find within ourselves an escape route off this Slave Plantation. Knowledge is good, but Wisdom is better_

Why buy all of her time for 6 million when she only wanted 65k There was no discussion of it must be all or nothing or that's my minimum conversation. If they can give it out for an hour or month, then they could take it more precisely too. Why not have her sell some, then come back for more because the uncle hasn't healed, until she's surprised that she's run out of time because she's never asked how much time she has left. Also, for hospital bill to go from 65k to 6 million plus a house is extreme. Doesn't need to be so.

I kind of feel this way as a 15 year diabetic. The government won't do anything about the prices of medicine. They are keeping us alive but at extreme cost shame on me for getting diabetes. I mean after all it is all my fault correct Obviously there's no such thing as genetic predisposition. Take care of your health out there people. You don't want to end up like this.

So true the victim helped will take the place in the system of injustice & abuse of the person that helped before leaving. the evil always finds workers. In the meantime some awakens and discover ethic & moral principals. The story of humanity on this planet.

I was just thinking about this concept the other day. Like how life would really be if it were like that movie In Time. Imagine that's what the future is going to be like. How crazy would that be This reminds me of the mark of the best Too.

The only problem is that he wouldn't be in a crappy little warehouse. He'd be in a nice place somewhere. Of course, shooting in a place like that would cost bank so.
I loved the premise. I can see how this sort of thing would get started.

What would one do for a little extra time if the cost was your children Trade the children or yourself Or neither Dealing with the devil is a no win. I'm with the one told him take this job and shove it. Interesting story. Thanks.

so the first assistant sacrificed all her remaining time to help that girl out. and the girl just complains what am i going to do with just one month ugh! then joins the evil guy
man, some people are just so ungrateful.

The dealer's assistant said, Helping her would cost you nothing, but that isn't true because he gave her $3, 262, 512 of currency to buy her time. So, he would lose that money if he just gave time back to her for free.

Time that can be bought or sold. That reminds me of a so-so movie, In Time (2011, where Time is Money. The Poor have as little as a few years/months/days/hours, while The Rich have Lifetimes or Centuries.
reply

Excellent! Is that not the deal we all make when we go to work, spending our lives for the money to buy some time not working and supporting others. What working to save for retirement
reply

Is it me or should that lady have said You knew HE was going to die and you took my time anyway. She said I was going to die but clearly the uncle died and that makes sense with the story.
reply

Talking into a phone that isn't switched on; )
Anyway this already exists, we exchange 8hrs a day, 5 days a week of our lives for money as is.

Good acting, direction and story line, defiantly needs expanded. Too many unanswered questions, although I basically get the story. Liked it
reply

Amazing, it's dark, cynical, but with some dark humour to break up the heavy mood, managed to create what is really a perfect tone. A great film.
reply

Interesting concept, but the acting was weak and the dialog fell flat for me. One of the weaker DUST efforts, I am sorry to say (but that’s OK.

Does everyone have the same amount of time at birth or do gain it if you live healthy and eat proper food etc
reply

No doubt, there are those in the world who would do such a thing.
Insightful and provocative. I LOVED it!

Awesome short film, really enjoy your work! I make short films as well, any support would really be appreciate!
reply

He never really does anything. It seems the assistant is the one with all the power to give and take time.
reply

I sure someone said it before!
Time is money
It did remind me of the movie In time from 2011!

reply

The protagonist is like that man in the story about Dorian Grey.
Classic Archetype. Faustian.

reply

To use the time right, and to be able to love - those two things are unfortunately very underestimated.
