Here's my take on the story-
The straw man blew off his perch in a storm and the girl went to look for him on the prairie. Meanwhile a real hold up was taking place at the bank. The robber was wounded as he ran off and made it as far as the farm before collapsing on the porch. The father bandaged him and called the cops. The girl came home and found the bag of notes and began to imagine Patches had been working in town to earn money for them. The father later handed the money to the police with the robber and for his honesty was rewarded by the bank, which saved their home. The girl blended her imaginary story about Patches with the real robbery story to detach herself from unpleasant thoughts that a robber had come to their house. This is the story we see.

My grampy talked about the dust bowl and how the snow/rain here in New England was red for quite some time.
Getting to the point, I just cried watching this, and in a good way, because I never ever really cry, nor comment much on anything.
Such great filming and acting all around to everyone. Y'know it's good if you made someone feel what you were doing. Peace and straw love.

Loved it! I would have liked the mother to be raising her with the father missing and the hole filled by Patches. Maybe this would be too obvious/cliche
