My assumption is WW3 broke out while they were conducting the experiment and communications went dark as a result. They tell their daughter they're on a spaceship in order to hide the terrible truth from her. But the mother started going stir crazy from the years spent in isolation without any knowledge of the state of things outside and talked to her husband about the possibility of leaving. He outright refused, believing they were safe underwater and going outside is too great a risk. So she decides to take matters into her own hands and record a message for her daughter to explain why she'll be gone for a while to investigate. The husband finds her mid-recording and attempts to stop her, but she manages to escape his grip and close the airlock behind her. We don't know what happens beyond this point but it is implied that she either vanished or later returned with severe radiation burns and perished, which he kept secret from the daughter.

I had to watch a second time, mostly to make out some of the dialogue from the mom and dad, which were critical plot points. The second viewing definitely cleared things up a bit.
Sounds like the mom left and either never returned, or as someone commented returned and died from radiation poisoning. It makes sense that the dad would lie to his daughter and tell her that mom is on earth to avoid telling her the awful truth- I guess she was young enough that she didn't remember growing up with her mother, or he could gaslight her into thinking it was just her imagination, or maybe that the memories are from when they all lived together on earth. Actually that's a terrible idea, but people make terrible decisions and lie to their children all the time, so I find it very believable that a father would take the 'easy way' out and avoid breaking the news to his daughter.

I think people missed a few details that put things into more perspective. First off, is that they were a couple without a child it seems when they went down and they were down in a submerged, not a buried capsule. When she is finally leaving, the capsule looks to be fully buried and that takes a very very long time to happen. She doesn't know she's underwater, she thinks she's in space, so she wasn't old enough to know any better if she was alive when it started. Her mother must've gone out a long time ago as well with what she was saying. Add in what the father says at the end and it seems a Nuclear war happened on the surface and he stayed below with his daughter to keep her safe from the scorched earth above and had been for at least as long as the daughter has been alive.

Since several of the recent Dust films I've watched have all basically sucked in some way, I've made it a rule to check the comments before I watch them now. That way I don't waste my time and end up disappointed. After checking the comments here, I will not be watching this one. Is it just me, or is Dust going downhill I remember a time when every Dust film I watched was pretty cool, and the ones that weren't so cool we're still ok.

Reminds of listening to a radio science-program in which they were interviewing some volunteers who were going to spend 3-4 months together in a Mars voyage simulation.
The last interviewee was a young woman who had purchased something so as to not waste all that spare time.
. she'd decided to learn the ukulele!

It seems that what Dad has to say around the 10: 45 point is CRITICAL for the story - but I can't hear it well enough to understand it. Good headphones, extra-zoomy soundcard, Engritch is my primary language - the thing has potential to be a good story. I guess. He apparently snorked Mommy for. some reason

Hollywood-level sets with good cinematography, acting and direction. It's too bad a better story wasn't used. It did have some good dramatic and emotional moments, but also a lot of inexcusable plot holes. I agree with others that the poor dialogue sound was annoying and the only production value flaw.
reply

so, she is made to believe that Earth is unhabitable and they are in space. then she discovers the truth. probably her mother is already out there living her life, now the crisis hit and she too needs to live in the new world whatever it it and find her mother.

Between the dialogue and the frankly retarded idea that people are dying unmonitored under the sea as part of an experiment that made big news, I had to thumb down this one. The film itself was well done but I feel like it was written by a ten year old.
reply

Does the girl live It's implied that she does as we see light from the surface. Is the world post apocalyptic Or is this a figment of the fathers imagination brought on by a mania caused by isolation So many questions left unanswered. AND THE BLOODY SOUND!
reply

Hate the shrinking credits B. S. Sound was horrendous could not hear a thing half the time. I gave it thumbs down for the credits shrinking and for sound quality. Other wise it was a brilliant film. Loved the spaceship, and the girl was a good actress.
reply

Dreadful sound levels with the music drowning out the dialogue in places, which, unfortunately, are the places were the plot is uncovering.
Basic schoolboy error.
I won't give it a thumbs down, but this glaring oversight lost it a thumbs up.

reply

I really couldn't understand anything. Too quiet.
I didn't understand what happened to her mom. And why this was all a simulation and she did not know about it Also what was her mom so exited to tell about and then why did he try to stop her

reply

As said prior, voice drowned out. Adjust the output of voice to exceed fx and background music. No matter how many times or how loud I made this video, I have no idea what her father said to her when lying on the recovery table.
reply

Oh gosh I wish this would have went on and on. excellent movie. I find that if the credits roll too fast that I simply pause the movie when they start rolling so that I can read them. Thank you all again, bravo.
reply

Only got half of the film because i DIDN'T UNDERSTAND ONE WORD the man was talking.
An only some of what the woman was talking. ONly the child was understandable.
What a shame, it was a good story (I suppose)

Really liked this one! Also, whoever designed that security keypad needs to learn about exponential retry delay or find a new job lol. Nice way to repurpose the little insectobot though.
reply

Loved this except for the poor audio. The girls acting was a lot better than many other shorts I've seen. The basic visual layout made it believeable but again, audio should have been better.
reply

Shouldn't Dust enforce some quality control and insist on an acceptable audio level before accepting a video Or automatically amplify any submissions up to a standard level
reply

Might be a good film. terrible sound editing. Couldn't figure out what dad said. More frustrated than anything. Hopefully the creator learned something from this screw up.
reply

Great background music. Too bad it was in the foreground and completely ruined the movie. I had to quit watching because I couldn't hear what was going on.
reply

. aaaaaand shitty sound design ruins another movie. go take lessons, guys. Why bother writing dialogue if you aren't going to let anyone hear it
reply

Why make a video with such lousy audio This is a repeat problem with Dust. Couldn't watch the whole thing. Thumbs down!
reply

Enough with that ridiculous drum! Couldn’t hear what dad said in answer to the girls question; plus it’s just annoying
reply

What does it feels like to be down there
I am pretty sure it will most likely be warm and moist to be down there

reply

As usual Dust, great movie bad sound even with everything at 100 I still can't hear half of what they say.
reply

That opening scene bot looks just like a shadow government info collector psi droid but crude and orange.
reply

Ending represents the after life and birth
NASA NEVER BEEN INTO SPACE BUT THE BLACKS CAME TO SPACE

reply

couldnt hear much, had to max volume to hear the whispering over background noise. but was cool anyway.
reply

That was. awesome. I Sub'd. i want to see more! and more. and more! Keep 'em coming! Thanks.
reply

Very well done, the music was perfect. If ever a film needed CC, however, it was this one.
reply

Stop messing with credits! It's unfair and insulting to the creators and ppl involved!
reply

Most annoying thing I have ever watched. Made no sense and the drum beat was really bad
reply

God I would of loved to see if she made but for all we know she never knew how to swim
reply

Not going to bother trying too listen.
