Sci-Fi Short Film Amanda_Test 1 - DUST

With the help of an experimental technology, a young woman returns to Sonoma County in order to re-live an important encounter. Amanda_Test 1 by Ben Gansky, Nat Moonhill & Veronica Moonhill The execution is fine, but theres no plot to take me to whatever big reveal is coming.
A short film needs to engage its audience quickly. Im halfway in and dont know where we are headed or why. Im not compelled to see someone accomplish something or reach a goal. There is no lie the protagonist believes which must be corrected.
All I see is some sibling angst. Im trying to guess what is special about Amanda, or what might happen, which means Im creating my own movie in my head instead of letting the filmmaker guide me.
Perhaps theres a surprise reveal coming, but theres been nothing engaging up to that point to get me compelled to find out what it is.

It always seems that the best films here explore the spaces between our humanity and our technology, and this one is a great example of that form. The pacing was deliberate, and lets us share this virtual space with the characters before the human, emotional heart of the story is revealed. I am left thinking about how I would make use of this technology in a similar situation, and how it would be gratifying and disappointing all at once. This one will stay with me a while, I think.

Wow!
I haven't seen this.
It could be very therapeutic
or
It could be very dangerous.
This small video
was intensive/ intense
and well presented.
More than likely
this level in
scientific advancement
is around the corner.
This device
pulls memories
from the mind
and brings them to life.
The scenic treasure
of Humboldt County, CA.
was an amazing backdrop
for the filming of this video.
Positive vibes.

Imagine when VR gets to this level. I would go in and relive times with my parents, my daughter, my grandparents, everyone that has passed on before me. Our brains store everything over our lifetimes and to be able to tap in to those stored events, or create new ones with loved ones, would be so wonderful. For now though, dreams will do. I need to learn Lucid dreaming. Yeah. I need to learn it.

No Technology in this Sim. The was a time the Super Computer was in our Heads not our Phones and Charisma, Personalities, Character, & Chemistry were part of everyday life.
With a Million Distractions at our Fingertips we forget we have the Library of Alexandria in there too.
All of Mans achievements and failures in your Pocket(you learn the latter in Public Schools.

Just thinking about all the great actors, directors and the rest of the crew making these short movies. In a way I'm glad they're not in bigger leagues, most of them anyway. This way we can enjoy top noch work without the burden of box offices, high profile stars or cults of personalities. Thank you all for being being humble enough to make all this great stuff for us: )

Yeah. I’m out. you probably should have listed it as a gay film. I personally don’t care for watching that kind of stuff. And a comment for people that want to leave some type of hate comment- I’m not a homophob I just don’t care to watch or be around it, it’s my preference and my right as a person

wonderful acting, editing, etc, just want to be clear of the story. She is using VR to come to terms with the death of her (female) lover. She dumped / ditched her boyfriend to be with her (female) lover. Her boyfriend (now ex) is trying to help her with the healing. Sorry for being slow. But love it anyway

Hopefully this kind of technology will never exist. Its much easier when someone close dies to simply let them go and move on with our own lives.
Loss is impactful on our daily routine but what we all need to do is close those chapters and embrace the new

I am not happy with this.
A VR simulation, even if made with a strong ai is still merely a facsimile, like a picture or video. The behavior of the protagonists is not a healthy coping mechanism. This should have at least been said.

I’ve had 4 family deaths in the last 12 months, including my own daughter in April 2019. If there were a way to reconnect, I would never want to leave. Except, I wouldn’t want her to return to a life of sickness and pain.

My only question is why is she barefooted in someone's living room and her feet are filthy, but the floor is clean! and the couch The other woman is sitting on looks like it belongs from a crack house

10: 36 The range of emotion on her face reads like a thick and deep novel. I can't help but wonder what memory the actress had to recall to give that moving bit of film that I will never forget

I’ve been weeks now watching these Dust shorts and this one is definitely one of my favourites. Incredible jobthank you all! Btw, that song was absolutely beautiful, too!

This tech is in the works. All it needs is data. As much data as possible then the AI just needs to predict everything between the data points. 2050 is going to be nuts.
reply

I wish I could do that with someone, virtually at least. I know it is a false statement, but sometimes, there are no other ways. Sometimes, it may be a therapy.

It was an effort for me to continue watching after the appearance of Amanda with her bull ring. Can't see anything else while she's on screen, very distracting.
reply

omg this is creepy! yet alluring.
keeping someone's essence digitally after they're gone, interacting with them in simulations.
yeah that's healthy

reply

Bit disappointing for me. No real discussion or commentary on the type and impact of the Tech, and what it's actually doing or simulating.

A bit of movie to show singer, but finally pretty positive use of this kind pf technology, against the common trend here. Thumbs up.
reply

Just like time travel, this technology seems like a good idea at first, but if you really start to think about it, no good can come of it.
reply

Where could I find the name of the actors The credits are cut before they appear on screen. Very heart touching movie, thank you.
reply

More dark scenes. dark rooms you can barely see the faces. places in the shade and you can’t see their expressions!
reply

Excellent and yet it didn't quite land for me and I have no idea why. Oh well, not - I think - the fault of the film.
reply

Worse one of these shorts I have seen and the bugger catcher in her nose did not help matters either.
reply

I feel like Catherine never took the chance to say I love you to Amanda while she was alive.
reply

Imagine if this shit actually happens in the futute and you can just tap out into another world
reply

The main actress reminds me of Britt Baron (daughter on Glow, but this does show on her IMDB.

More ominous words have never been said. You wanna take a look at the greenhouse

How cool would it have been if she was wearing Doc Brown’s mind reading helmet
reply

I put the thumb up because the singing starting at 6: 32. This actress signs very well.

Excellent. Superb story telling, acting and production are well done.
