Sci-Fi Short Film The Beacon - DUST Exclusive

The Beacon - by Chris Staehler. Mark and Kara Verne are both young shipping pilots struggling to make ends meet. When Kara goes missing months after taking a large interstellar contract, Mark travels to the far reaches of the galaxy in search of his wife. At first, I couldn't figure out why the lead characters, especially Mark, seemed so wooden. Well, if I was an actor and saw this script, I would have lost all enthusiasm. This is the first instance of Dust wasting my time. Hopefully, never again.

The acting st the beginning nearly took me out of it fully, but holy shit by hld way I was _INVESTED_ God damn!
Overall the acting really really needs some work, but the graphics were really stellar. The storyline was a 6/10, definitely sufficient to keep me watching. The score was fantastic too.
Just a couple things, why could your computer automatically know where the old mining lanes were if you hadn't seen it in any charts before Seems like an odd choice or an overlooked detail perhaps
Also, why would you set down so far from the other ship if there are fissures then presumably they're relatively homogenously distributed so you might as well have set down closer. Again, just seems like an odd choice or continuity-esque problem.
He also took him helmet off immediately which seems illogical. You don't know what cussed them to land and have an emergency, what if it was disease or a chemical leak What if there's foreign life that has infiltrated the ship now that it's landed

I always had a lingering suspicion that my randomly assignemned 50 year old female roomate (divorced with child) is just her overweight son who has an obessision with me and because I would never in this reality he spies on me gaslights and entraps me through her and her connections with lets say my mom. I think having a show with multiple realities, would be A boring and B over done. The aranged marriage and forced rape narative is just a murder mystery in the end and I think its boring and unoriginal. This show is better than that, so this one doesn't need to exist.

Good show, well done! I felt these characters. I really wanted a happy ending. Didnt the Man know when you find something weird/ glowing DON'T TOUCH IT! btw, if you are in illegal space area and you are faking your logs Then dont respond to a beacon, because YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE! When you get back home, maybe report it then, and if they ask how did you pick up a signal from those coordinates Say the signal must have piggyback on another ships hyper jump.

Figured they'd shoehorn in the diversity. The irony is that if we continue race-mixing, we'll all look the same in the far future. There won't be any more black, white, Asian, whatever. We'll all be one color lmao. So much for being diverse.

This is brilliant. im captivated. would love a feature length film, because it would be perfect timing for the whole world believing more and more in space exploration and the possibility of ufo's and aliens. brilliant, proud.

The horror of never being sure, the unknown, slowly dying of hunger in such a cold place, and only being fed just the tiniest piece of human the universe sees fit to send you every once in a great while. What a lonely existence

something subtle but that really adds tension: the camera lingers on empty doorways for just a second too long, which really makes you apprehensive of something behind him, even if there's nothing there

The story is solid, great ending, the CGI is very good. The acting, however, could be better. SciFi films need believable characters. The ones in this film were a bit on the flat side.

What did I just watch Is it a trailer for an AAA movie coming out of Hollywood Simply amazing! . and that fishing symbolism at start and the end making it a loop, simply wow.
reply

The audio at the start didn't sound correct (the fishing pole scene, but the rest was awesome! As others have mentioned - how do you create such a fantastic looking set!

The movie Alien clearly has been forgotten in this future, because there's a 0% chance I would have approached that open-top vaguely biological pedestal thing.

1st rate all across the board!
I agree with all the comments.
I started reading scifi in the 1960s. Stories like this were my favorite.

I hate how dust omits the closing credits. It's disrespectful to those who worked so hard and keeps that information from the rest of us.

Note to self in the future: If a distress beacon is pinging from a sketchy rocky place, never search for it. May be a hungry worm. or sarlacc pit.
reply

Ok, so it's real dark so we can't see what's going on then it ends and I guess everyone is dead So, nope, doesn't work for me.
reply

Such a sad yet terrifying ending. I gather its an alien that was able to mimic distress beacon's to lure its prey.

In its belly, you will find a new definition of pain and suffering, as you are slowly digested over a thousand years
reply

Wow, an amazing adventure full of mystery and romance and perseverance. Incredible effects, writing, and acting.

The male lead didn’t do it for me. He wasn’t able to hold my attention, after seeing the Hunk lead in FTL.
reply

Honestly, the ending was a biiiiit too obvious: D I feel like a more twisted ending would have been appropriate!
reply

Cool story but requires a lot of suspension of disbelief for the ending to work. It doesnt really make any sense
reply

I really like the special effects of the planet, really well done. It really felt intense and alien.
reply

Well, at least it wasn't Melancholia. Nevertheless, excellent values, reminiscent of scenes from EVE Online.

Recently, I came across a podcast by Dust. Now I'm down the rabbit hole. Good job Dust and all its partners!
reply

It starts with him fishing and ends with him getting fished, absolutely brilliant. Loved this movie.
reply

Dust seems great. But why are you guys so hell-bent on telling a story that turns out to be so boring!
reply

Today was a bad day to watch this. I lost my wife a month ago. Lighting a candle for her tonight

Now there are planets that have tiers No way this is a short film. This has to be a movie.
reply

Well, that was uplifting!
In seriousness though, vert well put together. Enjoyed.

So well done.
My favorite part is the cryo-sleep dream sequence. And all the rest.

I'm noticing a trend with Dust. Not going to say it out loud, but I can't un-see-it.
reply

Bad acting, pretty depressing pointless stoy, not up to par with the usual uploads
