A derelict spaceship becomes self-aware and builds itself a mechanical body in order to feel alive. Henri by Eli Sasich Also by Eli Sasich, ATROPA the series. Watch it on DUST here: Connect with the Filmmakers: - Blu-rays and DVDs available More About Henri: HENRi is an epic sci-fi short film starring Keir Dullea (2001: A Space Odyssey) and Margot Kidder (Superman. Hundreds of years in the future, a derelict spaceship - controlled and powered by a human brain - floats aimlessly in the outer reaches of space. Trapped in the cold metal prison of the vessel, the brain begins to experience disjointed images of its former life - images it cannot understand. Becoming increasingly self-aware, and yet unable to move, the brain devises a plan to build itself a mechanical body from parts of the ship. Maybe then it will understand the images it is seeing. Maybe then it will feel alive. Utilizing a mixture of quarter-scale miniatures, in-camera effects, and computer animation, HENRi is a completely unique and visually striking short film. Henri

Hey there I’m Eli, writer & director of HENRi. We made HENRi over ten years ago with the support of Kickstarter and a small army of very talented people (many of whom are listed in the video description. It was a true passion project, created by blending old school practical effects like quarter scale miniatures and rod puppetry with newer techniques. I’m super excited to share it with DUST’s amazing audience after our recent sci-fi series ATROPA connected with so many of you a couple years back. Happy to answer questions!

wow.
this is so well done. the use of different effects and media work together so good! it's quite clear that you've put lots of time and effort into this, and it was definitely worth it. and now I finally understand what My God, it's full of stars meant

Imagine. Drifting through the infinite vastness of space without any hope of returning home or finding a suitable planet to land on, or not being able to land due to a system malfunction. Life support system malfunctions. And eventually running out of substinance.

I did not expect this at all. I became more and more emotional.
So, the brains we see. Were they real human brains I have the feeling those flashbacks were flashbacks of the body the brains belonged to.

Short but sweet, an absolute gem of a movie, with more to say in 18: 38 minutes than other films of much longer length. Thought provoking, emotional, and quite sad at the end. Wonderful piece of art

And thus in the blink of an eye, having created the first of the T- (tee-dash) series of hunter-killers, the A. I. began and ended it's internal debate over the fate of mankind.

One day we may wake up, only to realize that we made a decision to download our consciousness into an android. Then we thanked DUST and Eli for such an awesome movie.

Theoretical question. Without earth bugs, microbes, bacteria, etc. Or insects or whatever, would human dead turn into skeletons in a closed environment
reply

So, it was Keir's brain in the jar. Any guesses on if was jarified from the beginning of the mission or if he died en route and laced in it by his crew
reply

That's so sad. Probably Henri sacrificed himself for science to preserve, to evolve, and at the end. everything is lost. burning in fire.

A magnificent beautiful moving movie, that points out the reason to exist, which is company, without it life alone, is so sad!

I thought that voice sounded familiar, Keir Dullea. Been a long time since 2001, an interesting flip on his best-known role.

Awesome. I love pondering the horror of being alone in space. I've been confined in real life, but you still know your on Earth.

I wish I could discern the speech. No automatic subtitles on Ytube and the sound is not good enough on cellphone.

This is simular to a Aliens short story I was thinking about.
The ships and some context but no AI garbage.

This is amazing and confusing animation. it's stop motion, then smooth cgi motion it seems. Regardless fantastic

At the very least, if you are going to mumble, allow for CC. I HATE modern cinema.
reply

A short film from 2012, six years before Margot Kidder committed suicide.
reply

I think HENRi had an epic life. Aside from that, I am gobsmacked with awe.
reply

I guess his mother never admonished him: Henri, don’t go near the nova!
