the dreamcast was a very interesting system.. and I think it could have competed although I don't think it would have been top market share of it's gen.
The saturn was a mistake in pretty much every way, complex to code for, rushed, the control pretty much blew on it.. I mean.. as far as im concerned sony pretty much perfected game pads back during ps1.
Sega royally screwed up the sega cd, had the sega cd and 32x been handled better, and skip the saturn, enter a little late into the next gen with the dreamcast.. I think they'd still be around.
I disagree that arcades had anything in particular to do with sega's fall.

If the Dreamcast could play DVDs it would have been a totally different story.
The ONLY reason I got a PS2 (I also had a Dreamcast) was because DVD was getting popular and I needed to buy a player...the PS2 was affordable and functional in comparison to a standalone player, so it was almost a no-brainer.
I recently purchased a friend's old Dreamcast for $200 (my offer) and couldn't be happier. The games still hold up over 20 years later, and it is kind of hard to find a -bad- game. The Dreamcast seems to have the highest percentage of -good- games out of the entire library compared to every other system over the last 40 years...

as a kid some friends had the sega systems...always hated the games...
for me sonic always was a cheap unfun version of mario...i dont even understand the concept of the game today...
do you have to learn and remember all the maps to play it fluently without running into every wall?
then i had my 'link to the past' while my friend was playing 'ecco the dolphin'...not a hard choice to make :D

Sega Simply Did Not have pockets deep enough to sell/and support the Dreamcast, guy in this article says it only sold 10M units and the PS1 155M, well dreamcast was discontinued what 2002?? thats 5M units a Year and a LOT of 3rd partys were going to support them until word of their severe money problems got around

Dreamcast is one of the greatest consoles ever. It was just too ahead of its time.

I was in line to get Dreamcast on day 1. When I booted up Soul Calibur I was completely blown away by the graphics, I-ll never have an experience like that again. Going from PS1-s crude, blocky 3D graphics, to this smooth beautiful, realistic looking game was insane.

dreamcast was my 1st game console ive ever played. it was my childhood. i remember when i was just a kid. In my eyes tombraider chronicles and starwars jedi power battles looks very real and high definition. its like seeing a resident evil remake 10 years earlier.

Was a great console but the controller would have needed a redesign to carry on. A right analogue stick and the removal of the VMU would have been needed, the batteries in the VMU went flat quickly and it beeped all the time.

I bought a dreamcast when it first dropped. Even before I got a PS2, I really wanted the console to succeed. It was an awesome machine and had such great potential. Resident Evil Code Veronica was amazing when it dropped.

Sony killed the Dreamcast with the promise of a DVD player. At the time a DVD placer cost as much as a Sopy playstation and the dreacast only had a CD player. How fast tecnology moves on, who buys let alone watches DVD-s
