It's interesting to me how fiscally ignorant almost all game commentators are. They have a weird belief that games are developed for only creative reasons, and getting money for them is kind of evil.
However, game development is a BUSINESS. That business requires a PROFIT in order to stay in operation.
Try to follow along, even if your pathetic brainwashing, disguised as an education, is telling you that any profit is a sign of evil CAPITALISM. That's another word worthy of real understanding.
As a CEO, or CFO, or COO, [ look those up if you dare ], you have a heavy responsibility to any shareholders, and your employees, to remain functional. Looking at what actually sells in video games, especially mobile games, we find tens of billions of dollars are made through in-game transactions. So people are paying real money to buy the items that are offered. In fact billions of people are paying for these items.
However, that simple situation seems morally onerous to the socialist-oriented commentators, who seem to have the dystopian opinion that the commentators should decide what is acceptable in any video game.
Actually, the buying public will decide what works and what doesn't work in any given game.
Of course, the elitist commentators have contempt for the public's opinions and buying choices.
I do not buy or play any games have have in-game transactions or 'loot boxes' in them that offer anything other than purely cosmetic items for sale, that require real fiat currency. I won't do that. Period.
I don't need some ignorant brat telling me what is good or bad for me in any video game.

If you went by anything other than that punchline, you'd have realized his statement was way more nuanced than many are making it out to be. As others have likely mentioned, if you're going to monetize a game, particularly mobile games, which is pretty much what he was talking about, you absolutely SHOULD be thinking about that monetization while you're creating the game. Most people don't particularly enjoy monetization in games but many games on mobile are free and they have to make money somewhere, at least if that's their goal. I don't know about you guys but I'd much rather play a game where the monetization was thought out and implemented as a part of the game, rather than hastily tacked on at the end.
That's assuming, of course, that they didn't do it just to nickel and dime you at every chance they can. Essentially, I'm all on board this philosophy, if it means monetization that makes sense and isn't designed to be predatory.

6: 25 as someone who's introduction into video games some twenty odd years ago was for Physical Therapy/ Mental Development reasons (I had a bad seizure as a child and essentially lost a couple years of mental development because of it) this attitude that video games are a waste of time or rotting your brain is just mind numbing to me every single time I hear it. As someone who now works at a game store, I hear this a lot and it never gets even remotely less annoying to have to explain against. At this point, I've just straight up stopped trying.
But to see these repeated wins in studies and other people's experiences definitely alleviates that a little bit. I mean, I wouldn't have been able to write on straight lined paper without these things (let alone have thousands of hours of good times both solo and with some mates.
Video games rock and so do y'all.

Sorry SkyMavis I don't feel bad for a company trying to propagate this NFT in gaming garbage. NFTs have zero place in gaming I'd rather say no to 1000 lootboxes on the home screen then give in to a worthless NFT which once I download isn't even the og file anymore defeating the purpose
Multiversus is just co metic though. Odds are you'll only spend to get a skin for your 1-2 mains or the battle pass. Anyone buying every skin for every fight is trying to flex not fight lol. The game itself is pretty fun tho. League Skins, Gacha games like Genshin cost so much more in terms of volume and on going reasons to buy. At least with League you won't be tempted to spend to keep up with others, but the two gacha games I play definitely tempt the hell outta me. Too bad I spent my fun budget on League skins instead >

Not that I'm keen on giving the predatory elements of the industry any more ideas, but it occurs to me that if they didn't roll out all the characters they had available all at once, it would have been more difficult to evaluate just how much it would cost to get everything. The publisher is in a position where they can afford to be patient and dole out new characters a month at a time, slowly increasing the cost of completion in a way that's not only kinder to wallets and stays out of the news, but manages to get that frog to stay in the pot as the temperature rises, if you catch my drift.
But publishers are greedy, insecure, impatient monsters, so doing anything with the players in mind (including taking all their money in a way that doesn't ruffle feathers) is a foreign concept.

Ya know what, i kinda understand. Im a business student and from my pov the dude makes perfect sense. You need to make as much money as possible to stay profitable, so that you can even exist in today's market.
Games are getting more and more expensive to make and less and less people actually want to pay the big moneys up front for them, but they ARE more likely to gradually spend in a game. So yeah makes sense, make a f2p game, bake in mtcs, they get a free game, they get the skins, you get the moneys. everyone profits. You can continue to exist, they continue to get content. YAY. BIG SUCCESS

Well, to be fair, it s the CEO s job to think about money first. Without profits they don t get to make any games. Creatives (I hate this term) might get to ignite realities like that while wallowing in their pretend word to create cooler things, someone has to make sure money is made. (Your second story as an example of why money must be thought about.
I know it s trendy to hate evil capitalism why being such a free spirit creative, but the latter doesn t get to exist without the former.
Just being real.

#10 I liked the way you worded it. but then went a little off track in my mind. I agree with him that you need to consider your monetization model early. Otherwise you may not have any other options besides exploitative micro-transactions or gambling mechanics by the time you're done the job. His wording about them being f'ing idiots was a little hyperbolic BUT if you don't think about it early you may corner yourself into bad monetization, which we see a lot of right now.

My short letter to John Riccitiello
Mr. Riccitiello,
When we as humans evolve beyond the need of money and capitalism I hope a reality TV show is made that follows former CEOs and executives such as yourself around. After all, where would you go when there is no longer any money to be made? I revel for the day I can eat popcorn and watch as you cry into your now useless millions on top of billions of dollars you lied, cheated, and stole.
Sincerely,
F ck Monetization

The Multiversus part is false news. Lol. I like 98% of your content but that news on Multiversus ain't it. The game isn't a cash grab, it's actually even better than smash ultimate. The game is completely free to play and you can unlock most content in the game without paying a penny.
The 200 bundle is just the option to unlock all the extra stuff without putting the work in, you can't be mad at WB if the players are lazy and don't wanna unlock everything naturally.

Well Gaming can lead to disturbed circadian rhythm, insomnia, depression, anxiety and high agitation. On top of that a lot of gaming is linked with obesity, muscle atrophy, dehydration, aggression, demotivation and heart problems. This is probably due to the limited amount of exercise and moving around you do as a result of excessive gaming sooo eh maybe the increase of visual processing information isn't worth the resulting mental and physical health issues.

about the guy that got the borderlands dlc weapon, i watched a few videos of him in the past, and he always have very good stuff (wepaons, artifacts, etc. to the point i think he use a save editor or something like that, i dont care if he does or not cuz is a single player game, i havent watch any more of his videos 1yr+ but many of his build guides seems un-realistic to me. and i stoped caring about borderlands 3, its a great game i just got bored of it.

The hit point badges are a nice idea if only the employee can choose what badge to wear, I would be worried if its the managers are choosing which badge to give you. Let say you where late so your boss hands you a low/red HP badge everyone in the office would know its you are almost done there.
P. S I want gameranx to do this with their employees, can you imagine the next ' Before you buy vid comes out and Jake is wearing a red HP badge
