I wish I knew what the hell clockwise meant when I was a kid. English is not my main language and as a kid I was barely beginning to study it in school when I started playing a rented copy of Chrono Trigger. When I got to the End of Time and got ask to run around the run 3 times clockwise I was at lost, my english dictionary did not include that word and the internet was still not a thing, and with no adults around that could speak English I had no way to know what the hell that meant. I spent a full weekend running aimlessly around the room without knowing what the hell I was doing wrong until we had to return the game.
Still, I managed to find the meaning in school, rented the game the following week and completed the damn game. Good times. Videogames, specially JRPGs are the reason why I learned English in the first place and now thanks to that I have a job as backend developer to support my family (and fuel my addiction to videogames: p.

Honestly I don't regret trading my games in to GameStop, I was able to get new games or older games that seemed interesting if I saw them being played on my friends console or if they were advertised on TV or in magazines.
I still do what I said above today, I will buy a new game an if I like it I'll keep it if I don't but play it all the way through I will trade it in to get a newer game or older game, repeat process.
I still have my collection today minus my gameboy and gameboy advance SP games which is the only thing I regretis selling at a mom and pop resale shop.
I am today 2024 looking for my old gameboy advance SP games and maybe one or two of gameboy games.

(insanely off topic) I like the video but that one static image of the kid at gamestop that is obviously AI is kinda off putting. I understand that AI is here to stay, and I understand using it as an easy way to demonstrate a single point clearly instead of a simple stock photo of two hands exchanging money. but since many people use it as a shortcut or even a way to circumnavigate paying actual artists, my immediate reaction to seeing AI art (no matter the context) is to distrust or dislike what is being shown to me.
not quite sure where I'm going with this but something that this video sparked in me

I can relate so much with the Number 1. Aside from being careless with our gaming stuff, I accidentally short circ'd my older brother's Xbox 360 back then as I apparently connected it to a wrong outlet when it's supposed to be connected to some sort of transformer outlet first (I literally had no idea how these things worked in our house before. Even though he didn't get mad, I felt the disappointment so much that I couldn't move and even face him. But eventually he was able to replace it with a newer version, he just kinda banned me from using the Guitar Hero controller for quite some time lol.

I never understood why people would sell their games for pennies. I always kept my games and played them again and again. I would never sell a game until I had the ability to play it some other way. Even then I wouldn't just sell it. If it was worth money I'd stash it in a closet. I still have a collection of rare games like the original Tactics Ogre. If it wasn't worth anything, or if I was just feeling really generous, I'd give it away to a goodwill store. Some lucky dork no doubt has my SNES Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy and Secret of Mana cartridges that they got for practically free.

as a British kid who played driver, I thought what the heck is slalom, and going into my teen years I assumed all Americans were on that page, this video makes me so happy to know its no just brits but a very specific niche of peeps who knew what it was but also, that what is was back then, a few people trying to make a game that weren't world wide accustom to the English selected language choices, now we have like 7 localization options, but it did help me learn the English language was a new world. now an English teacher out in Spain that's a wild trip

Ah a fellow Sonic barrel sufferer. We definitely need a support group.
As for disk damage, there was no standard that they were made to by different companies. Some were borderline indestructible, some got broken by a stiff breeze. I lost count of the number of times id try dusting them to make them work. Someone once told me furniture polish fixed them, which seemed to work but was almost certainly coincidence and probably massively sped up the rate at which the drive on the consoles packed up.

I DESTROYED FF8 by breaking the Draw system.
Drawing spells was my version of grinding for that game. I just kept doing it until I had 99 for each spell and attatched them to a stat. You can get the Card ability pretty quick to trade for stronger spells. Just head over to the training ground the Card the hell out of the T-Rex to get Quake. Rinse and repeat.
I had 9999 health before leaving the starting area (after about 14 hours of gameplay, but it was worth it )

I had a collection of ps2 games back in the day, I left to join the military and got stationed in Japan, when I came home for leave my friend had traded in all my games, worst part is I had a game called growlanser that I was really loving but never got to really dig into it, and I was never able to find another copy of it, despite him trading in my whole collection I never felt more betrayed than I did when I realized he included the one game I was super interested in

Fun fact, if a digital game gets dlisted that only prevents people from buying it, you still keep your copy and can even uninstall it safely, so long as you don’t completely remove it from your account (which is un necessarily complicated as far as steam is concerned) note that this only applies to pc crap, I can’t stomach playing on a console for even blood borne and god of war so I don’t know how they run their crap

Is difficult to count, just how many weekends me and my friends decided we were going to finally beat Sonic 3, only to be unable to get past the carnival level. We tried so so so so so many things, but never once did we think that you were supposed to stand still in the platform and press up and down. It wasn't until years later when I was in college that I actually did it right

I could actually fly the dodo. It’s difficult I will admit. But yes, just like this video said, you had to hold down the entire time during takeoff until it wanted to go up. And every now and then you would have to fly down just to keep speed and keep it wanting to fly up. Otherwise it would eventually stall. And turns wide turns only. But you could barrel roll like a dream!

i also got upset when my sister left the game outside the box just on the table next to the wii, AND ESPECIALLY WITH THE TOP UP. nowadays i refrain from buying disc games online if the disk is shown laying on anything but smooth plastic with the top up top down, sure dust is removable but scratches usually arent or atleast not as easy.

Digimon didn't turn into Sukamon because they pooped too much. They turn into that because you didn't bring them to the toilet to poop. They poop all throughout the game no matter what you do, there's no avoiding it. The mechanic is built around trying to get them to a toilet in time, which was kind of a balancing act.

MAN, GAMESTOP REALLY FINNESSED US AS KIDS. NOWADAY THE GAMES I GOT $2 FOR ARE GOING FOR $10-$70 online. Especially on what not. people are paying premium for games that are hard to find. Yup hold on to your games people because they maybe $1-$5 bucks now. Wait until they become impossible to find. $$$$$$$$$$

I very much relate to Falcon as I also had sibling that would use my stuff while I was away and every time I would come back my OCD would flare up and I'd just start going into this mad sorting of all my games making sure everything was in the right case and then I'd look at the time and go oh shit it's 11 PM

To be fair, I knew what the slalom was from watching actual auto racing on TV, because autocross exists.
Also, Destruction Derby was _amazing. _ I remember playing that at a friend's house who had his PlayStation hooked up to his stereo system. You could feel the impacts of cars hitting you.

To fly the dodo I used to spawn loads of tanks.
that would get rid of all the cars off the roads.
I would drive the dodo back out of the airport and onto the bridge.
Wait for the bridge to start lifting and fly off the edge. Used to fly for well over 6 mins.

Omg that driver tutorial took me so long to finish when I was a kid. I had no clue what a slalom was. I eventually beat it by luck after trying so many different things lmao. Beating that tutorial felt like beating the damn game back in the day hahaha
