i have a question, i am a very VERY early film maker, i dont even have a real video camera yet i have been using a standard cheap digital camera that happens to take video, but i am planning to get the Kodak play touch soon. for it i will also be getting the fake Sony ECM-DS70P because it still sounds better then on board recording. my question is what is the full function of an audio (other then the obvious) and is one worth getting at this point in time or should i wait a few years?

What I'm most interested in when comparing these two is the quality of the pre-amp. I want to be sure that when I connect a shotgun mic via XLR they will not produce unwantable hiss noises.
I've seen some tests with the DR-40 where there's a lot of hiss. In this video though, I've heard no hiss at all. Does this have to do with the settings people use when dealing with the Tascam? Can you assure me that with the right settings I'll hear no hiss using the DR-40?

Hey Griffin. I recently got into freelance work, and so far I ran into a problem with recording audio separately where the audio file runs at a different speed than my video in FCP so I would sync my audio in post and by the end it will be off. I know how to change the speed to compensate, but this is annoying. can you do a video covering bit rates vs. frame rates? I'm sure this is something your viewers will appreciate.

i have question about video i not find not yet
when you record 2 people talk, for example, how you record both faces, no see cameras, you record 1 at time, like just 1 face and rrecord same conversation record another face after, and the end make video studio at home or you record with 2 cameras in diferent directions. thanks so much my friend

I have the DR-40 and the DR-08
both generates this helicopter sound when i connect a lavalier mic (with batteries.
when i use the internal microphones, the noise is gone.
I am trying to find a workaround, but hitting the menu button is not enough.
If someone knows how to eliminate this, please be kind and answer me please?
nice tutorial btw

I like part when you recorded the 30mph with the recorder combined with the dead cat. The sound produced reminded me of being in a ship in dead space. At times the character in Dead Space has to be in 0g using his jet back to get around. The sound from his pack and the 30mph almost sound the same. Better remember that if I need to make a lift off.

Griffin, as far as I can see you have no screen capture videos. I know you don't really do that stuff but you probably know a lot about it to do with visual quality and audio quality. I would appreciate it if you made videos about that and how it relates to computer screen capture, game console VIA TV capture, and so on. Thanks.

I love my h4n, its been really handy! I got mine used(bearly) for about the same price as the same as the DR-40. A buddy of mine was moving and was unloading some of his gear that he didn't really use much so he gave me a great deal. It did come with a 2gb SD card though not a 1gb. ( currently use an 8gb though)

According to Tascam's official website, the Helicopter noise you hear on the DR-40 comes from the fact that the DR-40 is designed to work only with balanced microphones, whereas unbalanced microphones will create that. The H4n is more acceptive of that, and does not showcase helicopter noise.
reply

There is a difference in the Tascam and the Zoom, Tascam picks a little bit more low frequencies from your voice and makes it sound richer. And the helicopter sound only appears when you boost 10db, if you do that you are going to be picking a whole bunch of other unwanted background noises.

Koprivamedia the helicopter noise is an issue with unbalanced mics. A decent shotgun mic does not have that problem. Also, if you have only one mic plugged in, you can set the dr-40 to mono, which turns off the other preamp and also saves space on the SD card. I love my dr-40 compared to the h4n

I really don't understand what the big deal is with Final Cut Pro to me it's overrated. I mean I'm not saying it's bad it's great software, but what makes it better then Sony Vegas or Adobe video editor also is there anyway to limit the sound of the noise while editing your video?
reply

Hey Griffin you should be Data from Star Trek. When I hear your voice (which is great for instructions) sounds almost like the character. Face pain, contact lenses, and costume you can be a photocopy of him. The only downside is shaving your face. Hope to see you as him big fan.

I have both the Tascam DR-40 and the Zoom H4N. THe Tascam DR-40 was a gift and I went ahead and bought the Zoom H4N a few days before. I figured I would keep both. I tried both and experimented with them with a XLR and lapel as well as the onboard mics. Works great!

I hear XLR is a great way to get audio.
I have a dynamic mic that uses a XLR cable.
It's pretty much the same cable a electric guitar would use, but it's for my XLR mic.
Would it sound the same as a XLR cable with a XLR male connector?

Sorry Andy LMAO! Gee, as a cat lover I don't like when I hear/see dead cat either, but I had to stop the video and place this comment here.
Well, nice comparison for audio recording outdoors, exactly what I needed. Thanks a lot!

i love this video! I feel like being 10 years old again and watching those tv show for which you wait the whole week. and then you listen to it and every part of it amazes you because it's so simple and educating!

how do I connect the Shot gun mic to my camera? and is there any need to connect a tescam to my canon dslr when filming? Can I just record audio separately from the tescam audio kit and sync the sound in post production?
reply

Love your tutts as usual.
Q: Would I be able to run 2 wireless lavs, Rodelink filmmaker kit, to the Tascam dr40 to record dialogue for a scene? If so what mode should I use? Thanks in advance for your response
