UBER-CHEAP MICROPHONE SHOWDOWN (And Russ Gets Punched For Forgetting PAL): FRIDAY 101 Chad: A dynamic, hand held mic in no way can stand in for a shotgun. The dynamic mics are omni patterns, which means they pick up equally in all directions. Shotguns are usually supercardioid with a pattern like the diagram you showed. Also dynamic mics are designed for up-close use like a news reporter holding it to the mouth. You'll notice that the volume drops dramatically when you pill it even a foot away - terrible choice for an on-camera mic, but then again, so it putting a mic on a camera.

actually, there is cardioid, supercardioid, omni, and shotgun (as well as subcardioid, hypercardioid, and bi-directional. what you're thinking of is cardioid, which is most hand-helds. that's because it doesn't pick up much in the back of the mic, preventing feedback on a stage. however, you're right about the fact that they have no distance. you definitely have to get them closer
If you're far from the subject, shotgun is the way to go, and there are some cheap ones out there

CMIIW, Zoom H1 is not unidirectional so does H4N that i have.
having difficulties editing Zoom H4N recording from around 2-3meters from subject (kindda low voice) and kindda noisy background (water pump for a pool. Note: the subject is 12 oclock position, 2meters away, the pump is at 5 oclock position, around 5-6meters away and not sounding so loud either. but the end result picked up so much (loud) of the pump and the recording is unuseable.

Geek here.
I just want to point out something even though I don't see anyone complaining about this. but the reason why the plugged in mic. at 1: 38 sounds even more awkward and possibly less pleasing than no mic is because the unidirectional recording it is doing is capturing strictly the reverberation of all the ambient noise in the background instead of listening to the original attack of the sound and then the reverberation.

After owning my DSLR for more than half a year i realised that i can plug-in my PC mic that i stopped using after i got a laptop. Don't have a how to video on that though, but think of a hot-shoe mount, fold and tape the cable to shorten it and you will be rewarded greatly.
PS: i have a tutorial on controlling older nikon DSLR manual video settings, shutter and ISO, vintage lenses included masterclass on nikon D5100 video

IndyMogul, in my experience (& what I've been taught) you should NEVER have something touching the boom mic (see 2: 27) that'll carry soundwaves through the pole or even the cord to degrade your desired sound. :/
And have you ever heard of the Sima Zoom Microphone (it's the bigger one, SZM-2? You could get that one at $59. 95 SimaProducts. We're getting better sound equipment, but we used it for our webseries pilot.

A year old, but hopefully will get a reply!
The Azden SGM-X seems good in your videos, but other videos I find have it sounding really bad especially outside at a medium (6-10 foot) distance. But your inside shot from distance seemed fine. Seen any issues using the Azden outside, especially at distance? Noise and general sound quality. Thanks!

I'm looking for a new microphone to record my singing.
I really don't have much money, so I'm looking for the cheapest solution with a pretty nice quality. What do you guys think? Is the Audio-Technica ATR1100 a good choice for my recording, or should I go for the Hisonic HS-800, which did sound a bit clearer in the video here.

reply

LOL! I absolutely agree, Russell-of-the-future!
Seriously, thanks SO MUCH for this video! So many people say things like Oh, look at this cheap microphone -- it only costs $150 bucks but it's pretty good. Appreciate the info on the mics for those of us with shallower pockets and/or stingier shopping attitudes. ;)

WOW. I came here looking for some actual tips and tricks. BUT, you can't even mix your OWN sound right. What ever mic you were using, -ALL- the highs were pitching. Please, take a course in audio-mixing BEFORE you do another MICROPHONE SHOWDOWN. THAT being said, thanks for making my choice easier.

DwainVFX: You're incorrect. UNIdirectional means one direction. While no microphone is strictly unidirectional, a hypercardiod pickup pattern is pretty close to unidirectional.
OMNIdirectional on the other hand, means all directions. UNI = one, OMNI = all.

As far as a cheap mic the HS-800 was more crisp sounding and your voice sounded best with this one. The cheapest lapel mic should not even be on the market. I am looking for a good lapel mic but that will not be the one for sure.
reply

More than a hundred year lifespan and still was not an audio guy by any means. The Neewer lapel mic gives really decent results with a bit of gain reduction and better placement. It is a lapel mic and not a shotgun mic after all.

The SG108 is in no way comparable to the Rode VideoMic. That's actually better sounding than the VideoMicPro, but it lacks the 20db boost. The SG108's soldiers have been reported to melt in normal use, so watch out for that.

I have the hisonic HS-800 I am satisfied. its thanks to you good sir! I really appreciate the recommendation! ill be sharing this video in my groups for general recording and such.
reply

Is the SHENGGU SG-108 really as good as the Rode VideoMic? Takeing into account sound quality, durability, and that I'm on a fairly tight budget what should I get?
reply

Can somebody help me? I would like to record some songs from a organ, piano tone, and maybe some singing too, spend the less money possible. tks
Regards

I use a guitar hero (Or rockband, i forget) microphone. It is really good quality. Unless you turn the volume up, you hear little to none static
reply

I hate to be that guy-but if you plug those cheapo lapels into a zoom H1, the preamps, plus some playing in post, make for acceptable audio.
reply

Since I know nothing about this shit, does the ATR1100 just connect straight to the audio input? You know, the one next to the headphone jack.
