DEATH OF A SHORT FILM: Friday 101 Story Time!
video description
Next day with a half-rewritten story me and a whole other guy made it, improvised it out, it was great.
Next time - similar situation, same guy. Totally failed. Because it was a 'job' vid, not a contest as a motivation for him.
Passion and motivation - that is all.

Took a month to get a short from pre-prod. to prod. We had a location, we had talent and a small crew. However it all fell apart when we arrived to the location and realized the location was the worst place to film. It had reflective glass on all the walls and a multiple yogurt machines running loud and proud. Not to mention, we had a diva moment with one of our actors who then literally quit in the middle of shooting and went home. Lesson learned: friends aren't actors and know your location.

Operation Black Sun. At the start of writing the script, the game Wolfenstein was quite popular, with it's newest release recent at the time, so we thought we'd make a parody of it. That was well and good, but by the time we were done, it was a two hour long film, and it was two or three years after the game had been released. No one at the film premiere got the jokes, and you would have had to have been a fan of Wolfenstein to get half of them. For the amount of effort put in, it gradually de.

We had met with the Bowling Alley people and told them about our film. They said it was OK to film there. This was about 2 months prior to shooting. The director had 4 meetings and all was good. We showed up the day before and got all our angles and test shots. On the morning of the shoot, as actors and crew arrived, the owner changed their mind! Our director was so upset he was about to call it all off. I pushed the idea to move onto the next location. All worked well. We cut the intro. All OK.

When i was 11-12 years old i was trying to make two films, one was about a girl getting murdered at a library and her two friends trying to find out who did it. I also had the girl that was killed coming back as a ghost for no aparent reason. I was allowed by the school librarian to shoot the murder scene there, so everything was going great. I decided to start shooting before the script was done, but i never came that far becuse one of the main actresses refused to be in the film and since the

I had to film two homecoming skits during my freshman and sophomore years. The first one was very unorganized, actors weren't showing up, and the president didn't do anything about it. I had only one night to edit it before submission. It obviously received last place. Sophomore year was worse, since they wanted to increase the amount of locations, so we ended up filming at 5 locations over a span of two days, and we ended up throwing a bunch of footage on the floor because we went. (cont'd)

Hahaha boy do I have a story for you guys! My group of friends are the HighSchool geeks, especially with filmmaking(well for me that is)I wanted to make an action mini series about people hunting wizards for bounty. now in the story there was supposed to be a love interest between the main character and another hunter. The two people were already dating at the time, and when we were about to shoot that week, they broke up, refusing to talk to each other, so that obviously trainwrecked the film: (

I tried to make a short zombie film with a group of friends. Only some of them had acting experience, and we were all pretty much 12-13 at the time. Of course, me being an idiot, I neglected to get any food or water, so there we were on a hot summer day, hungry, with no means of sustenance. My camera ended up breaking because one of my actors thought it would hilarious to kick it over while filming. He also stole my bike: ( Also, 4 out of the 7 people I did have slated to show up never did. I e

Me and a few friends were contacted by another group who had a script and wanted to make a short film out of it. We agreed to produce it while they acted. Then they announced they didn't have enough actors so we ended up casting half of the roles to our friends. Their group was all first timers and apparently didn't realise how much time it takes to make a short film so after 6 months of preproduction and shooting they told us that they wanted to quit. The same people who proposed the project.

I made a zombie short film and after trying to get people to be zombies I resorted to the crew and everything went fine, until the next day when we were supposed to shoot the second half that tied everything together and the only person I could get ahold of was the lead actress, at the very least I needed my makeup artist to do the makeup (and she had taken home all the makeup I bought for the film) and so we went to her house to try and fine her, she wasn't there and we didnt finish the film.

Just this past summer, at my High School, our media club attempted to make a short film entitled, Chasing Shadows. a fictional story w/ demons and magical pendants. We were all excited to make this. But, over time, we struggled w/ so much. Our locations werent't decided very well (felt last minute) & our cast and crew struggled to appear in multiple occasions. One actress even quit because it was getting so ridiculous. My lesson from it was know ur story, and choose ur cast & locations wisely.

gradually declined in quality the whole way through, and by the end I was so sick of editing, I tried getting it all done within a few weeks, and the whole thing was just not as good as it had hoped to be. We did have fun filming it, but during the course of it, there were two break ups of the same couple, who played somewhat major characters, and I had to get my cousin's friend to voice over one of them. It was a very awkward premiere when no one found it funny. But I worked on the good.

Heyy. I would like to share a similar experience. I started this psycho thriller projects with my buddies about an year ago. And it was such a disaster that almost when we shot 50% of film the entire cast was replaced by new one (You know some got jobs, some got better jobs and all. unfortunately we couldn't make it pass 50%. But I learnt the whole process of budgeting and scheduling and most importantly casting actors. It was a great experience which helped me in the next projects. :)

In 2010 I was involved in a Star Wars fan film. The writer / director had a big vision, that he could not execute. He had very little to no film making experience. It failed the film. A quote out of his mouth If we could only get away with not feeding the crew. It was an all volunteer crew. Shame. The lesson: With film less is more. Don't have champagne tastes on a beer budget. The good part I became friends with the producer and have worked on other paid projects together.

Very true. The larger the production, the more things can go wrong. The last big project I did was to organize a 1920's flapper themed photoshoot at a swank hotel that had been built in the 1920's. I had 3 different models, an MUA and a second photographer to capture secondary angles (not to mention I had to purchase $1, 000, 000 in liability insurance just to be able to shoot there. Fortunately, however, everyone was on the same page and the shoot went off without a hitch.

On Friday (the day you uploaded this video) we started the production phase of our first major project - in (guess where) good old Brick, NJ like you! We were walking with a large group of actors, extras, crew from school to my house. I was nervous because there was one costume that we had to have on location that was being shipped. We get to my house, and it wasn't there. I had to go to the mall to buy it. Anyways, it all started getting better. I guess I had some luck.

Recently, I did two Star Wars shorts (/watch? v=fVbBO6F62N4) but then my camera got damaged. I have a better one, but it didn't pick up the blades as well (and, of course, I'm too low budget for software like After Effects.
But hey. at least I got two done. maybe more to come in the future.
For the moment, I'm planning another short following a 'test' I did (/watch? v=pbZNASnQ99Q) but finding friends/actors with the passion and commitment is tough. Wish me luck!

Wow, thought I was alone. I had this same problem. Tried to take on a much larger project with a cast and crew of about 20. We could only use this location on Saturdays and almost every time we scheduled something, a few people backed out and those few people were always the important ones for the scenes we planned to shoot that day. All of the cast were students and we didnt finish before the end of the semester. Our lead actor and another actor are now graduating.

Shooting long films can be impossible sometimes! i shoot in Iowa and the weather is extremely unpredictable. its May and we got 10 inches of snow. Anyway i started a short film about a year and a half ago and found that it is extremely difficult to find days that work for all the actors. plus our Director of Photography and Lead role didn't get along at all. so i Recasted and planned everything more specifically and now hope to be finished by 2014. Hope its worth it!
