Indy Mogul. Never put music/noise over speech. This should be lesson #1. There are many different accents of the English Language and this can't be helped. When a person is speaking with an accent (to me, obviously) and then some annoying noise is put over the speech, it becomes very difficult or impossible to understand. Remember, your purpose is. to communicate, right.
Lesson #1a) Music is an Art and all Art depends on the aesthetics of the person consuming the Art. This means that there is no good Art and bad Art, there is only the Art that I like. (or, you like, obviously)
In other words My music is wonderful and your music is shit This is always true of all Art.
Again, remember your purpose is to communicate your information to a broad range of people, everybody. Terminate the noise/music.

I saw this video about 5 years ago and it inspired me to attempt my own documentary. I had no idea that simple decision after watching your video would take me on a crazy journey from the streets of Los Angeles, to desert towns in California and ultimately all the way to Culiacan, Sinaloa Mexico. I got a glimpse into the narco underworld and the world of the cartel ballads (Narco corridos. It wss amazing. I finally finished my film a few weeks ago. But THIS video inspired me to make it happen, so I wanted to come back and thank you!

As a news reporter I get to do this type of filming, writing and producing everyday however at one point you said film something you're passionate about. I sometimes am not passionate about the stories I have to cover but I have to cover them because it's my job. The. The story is lacking. Not that I don't try my best still but there's a huge difference when your heart isn't in it. That's why I'm actually quitting the news biz and becoming a full time videographer and shooting docs. Thanks for the videos. from two years ago lol.

Your Sriracha documentary was so good and so inspiring. You made me realize that not everything has to be feature length. It's really inspired to get me to try my hand at making one. Granted your outline makes it look easier than I am sure it was, but they are worthwhile tips for sure. I watched the doc on Vimeo and just recently paid for the Blu-Ray. I want to have it in my collection and be able to show others.
Awesome job! I hope it opens more doors for you, you have major skills!

Thanks for the ideas. here is one in return: Follow the path of a single bottle from where its plastic is manufactured to the plants being harvested to the guys who make it to the market where its stocked to the people who use it in (restaurants around the world, which by the way Mexicali Mexico known for having over 100 Chinese restaurants all around the somewhat small city, love) to your hands in the end of the documentary. Again Thanks

good tips. I'm making a feature movie doco about startups. I've got a bunch of interview subjects + interviewing myself and my friend co-creator of the doco + footage about us going to an event next year + 24mins of extra footage. your tips are useful I've written screenplays before. but this is my first doco and I did wonder how to actually write a doco.

My confusion is with writing the script of a documentary. What does a doc script physically look like? Maybe this is a novice question (guilty) but I have only written scripts where I make the content (location, characters, dialogue) up; it's imaginary. In a doc script, are all these elements still present, is the script formatted in the same way? Thanks.

Just wondering how a documentary is founded? Did you pitch the siracha doc to a company? Or how does it work?
