Griffin's sick; and disappointed with the motion tracking results of Adobe After Effects. A simple chroma key effect for a magic picture frame, and lots of cool videos on this week's playlist!

On another topic: What do you do if you have been working on script, sets, props, and etc. then discover another person in a different state has a kickstarter with the same title and story line you've chosen? Happened to us, only his was posted months after our project began--in another state, is animation and a series, where as ours is going to be a short with live actors. Do we need to re-name ours? Can we continue? We are freaking out. (We haven't begun filming yet-just used time and $)

Hey Griffin! AE could track that motion just fine, The problem is that box around your tracking box in AE is too small (as far as it was told to me) AE is going to check within that big box to see if the small box is there frame by frame, the more motion per frame the bigger that larger box has to be then the smaller box, yet the bigger the longer it takes (or if too big the more confused it can get) You're not doing too much motion but try it again with a larger outside box, it will be solid

No I'm wrong it was first bundled with After Effects in CS4
Perhaps you could have tried the camera tracker that was implemented in CS6. I've tried using it myself but for tracking miniatures it doesn't seem to work.
If you wanted to use the old tracking system maybe instead of using +'s as they never seem to have ever worked properly for me.
Try using contrasting large blocks that are a solid red or blue as you can easily use the tracking data to mask or keyout out the markers.

The tracker built into AE is fine. The only common issue I've noticed between people new to motion tracking is that they don't understand how to use the Search and Feature Regions correctly. Not every track will be perfect with default settings, but with adjustment, and knowing how to reset the Attach Point you can track nicely. That said Mocha is definitely better than AE for certain situations, but with the 3d camera tracker now in AE I rarely find myself having to leave AE for simple tracks.

. which is something a lot of companies like these, and developers, aren't very good at often. Take Autodesk as an example. They make perhaps the most powerful or at least most used 3D programs, Maya and 3DS Max, and still they are very, very bad at being part of the communities that people create for them. Likewise they're not that good at keeping their software up to date.
Also, we just gotta be creative sometimes and find ways to do things unconventionally: ) Many forget that.

I'm not gonna deny that mocha is the best tracker, but the after effects version comes with every copy of after effects so you may wanna check for it because mine came with it. Also you don't need a four point track in after effects for this frame you can get away with a 2 point track and it should work fine since the bottom two crosses seemed to stick. Just a little help for everyone else out there.

Hey griffin,
You should watch Video Copilots motion tracking tutorial. It shows some tips for how to get better tracks in AE. I think you main error (if I may so humbly suggest) is the area that you had the tracker looking for the tracking point. If you make the sampling area bigger (the white box on the outside of one of the corner points) it should be able to keep a better track.
PS. Feel better bro.

I used that framed green screen trick last year, with a modern spin. A friend was shooting a video for school and wanted to hold up some photos and then a video clip. So I added a green solid jpeg to my bb playbook. All she had to do was turn it on and full screen the jpeg, and shoot their video. I tracked it with AE and added the photos & clip. Easy!

For my motion tracking I use Hitfilm ultimate 1 and I have to say that it handles pretty good tracking (eg. two elbows) and my only complain is with the fact that sometimes both points rotate about 3 degrees. Which it's no big of a deal when stabilizing some video: ) And I heard that hitfilm mocha is even more awesome! (Hitfilm 2)

3ds max and maya have enourmously large communities and are updated constantly by Max. Almost everytime my software crashes due to my erroneous overclicking rampages for failing at something, Autodesk suggests a new update which is now available. I suggest you check your sources. Autodesk is a big fish.

Yes, Blender by all means. It works great and is free at blender's It does 3D tracking and can be used to add cgi directly into video. You don't even need to add markers in most cases. You can use corners, cig butts, and even items on parked cars as tracking markers.

With after effects, you should try making the search area slightly bigger and the tracking point smaller. With the size you had, there was a lot of yellow being tracked and moving the board to fast with a small search area is bound to offset it.

I know that After Effects motion tracking can be a pain, but I've never seen it that bad. My understanding is that CS6 has some really awesome motion tracking now, that will chose multiple points for you, and give you them in 3D space.

I'm surprised you couldn't track with after effects. I've never had a problem. Did you make sure to have the tracking boxes tight enough and did you just track or use null objects? Null objects are your best bet.

A great tutorial to watch for tracking in blender is
/watch? v=tXOnPisiugA
it's for a simple screen replacement covering the whole process from import to export.
Even using blender's awesome built-in compositor!

after effects would have tracked it perfectly fine, you just have to increase the outer rectangle size which is the search area for the next frame. If the point gets outside of the search area, it cant get tracked.

uncle griffin, i want you to know i hate CC, because it require internet connection which is suck in my country cause it lack of speed, maybe adobe will make another CS for slow internet connection country like us?
reply

Apparently not enough people know about it. Blender, along with AE, will satisfy all your visual effects needs. It takes time to learn and get used to the interface, but it has a LOT of awesome and useful features.
reply

The problem is you did not set up the marks correctly inside after effects. The outer box is how far the object will move in a frame of the video. You need to make them bigger to make a more accurate track.

Griffin. use Blender (blender. org. Check my page for the screw on the floor video. No issues. Its a 3D modeling program with awesome motion tracking and it costs the exact price of. nothing.
