I work at a movie theater that made the switch from film projection to digital 4k projection and I gotta say you can tell a HUGE difference between our old system(old school film projection) and our digital 4K projectors. The quality is absolutely impeccable. Also it is noticeable(although only slightly) the difference between films shot in 4k and those that aren't but we do have an extremely large screen, smaller screens it is probably harder to notice a difference. So for big budget films I think it's the way of the future, but for the average amateur filmmaker 4k is probably overkill unless your touring festivals with your film.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera doesn't even shoot RAW yet, right? ;)
And usually there's no thing as 4: 2: 2 RAW.
And the Canon EOS 5D Mark III can shoot uncompressed 1920 X 1280 RAW video with a color depth of 14 bit per pixel and 11. 5 steps of dynamic range if you use the free firmware Add-On Magic Lantern.
And the first Blackmagic Cinema Camera didn't shoot 4K and still had the lovely ProRes codec and even RAW.
So you don't need a 4K camera to get lovely editing potential.

This episode missed some critical stuff on 4K. Not all 4K cameras are actually 4K. Some are UHD like the BlackMagic 4K Cinema Camera - that's only 3840 x 2160, short of actual 4K. UHD is 4x HD, but not 4K.
The other reason to want a 4K recording is because of CMOS sensor debayering - each pixel scanned in 4K film contains a full RGB colour, but with CMOS sensors its generally R, G, G, B in a 2x2 row. This means it's not REAL 4K colour, but by downscaling you'll get a true 1080p or 2K file.

I was assuming that the BMPCC will shoot raw in the future. You're right about the 4: 2: 2 raw thing, It should be 1080p and has 16-bit 4. 2. 2 'or' raw since you don't have to worry about color space with raw (I think. I forgot about the 5DMkIII shooting raw with magic lantern, but It i personally think there are too many workarounds using that. The first BMCC was still over 1080p. Also I forgot about the lovely image from the Digital Bolex. You don't need 4k, but you may need a pro camera.

I would argue that a 4K camera is almost necessary, but not for the 4K. With the exception of the Black Magic Pocket CC there are no cameras that shoot something like 1080 and has 16-bit 4. 2. 2 raw (at least not to my knowledge. The dynamic range and flexibility of raw video, or a high bit rate, is more important than resolution, but is really only available in 4K cameras (there are exceptions. Now this is not something that the average project requires, nor is it more important than story.

I really want to go 4k. I'm a quality buff, I'd like the flexibility that resolution would offer, the potential to capture better still from frames, but also to be relatively future proof. Being able to make a project 1080p today, and then later remastering a 4k version. more data would also make accurate 2D - 3D conversions better later down the line when content aware algorithms become reality

I disagree, 4k video taking off very fast. There are 55in 4k tv's for sale that are down to $3, 500. After christmas they will drop even more. Not many people can film 4k video right now but making a 4k time-lapse is pretty easy and the results are incrediable. A great example is the movie Timescapes. I think the switch to 4k will be faster than most people think.

This is the first of these videos that I have ever watched, i am very impressed by the quality of the video, the writing, and the acting. This is a job well done. It earned my sub, i hope all of your videos are to this standard!
reply

Griffin, I don't think you're a bad actor at all! Acting is hard and I'd bet the vast majority of people who say someone can't act don't ever have the guts to get in front of a camera themselves. Great video and great job!

The thing that told me it was fake was the night-vision shots. Night-vision is no longer common on cameras, and when they cut to the lights on, it looks like one shot with a filter toggled on and off in post.

in chile, where i come from. nobody bought the lg tv prank. lol
in fact. im sure those were actors. as a spanish native speaker, i can feel the bad quality acting of that people! only hearing them.

Would it be possible to have the fiction piece about Russell separated from the actual news? It really clogged up the flow of information and made this a hard show to get valuable information from

Nice cliffhanger in the finale and resolution here. You (Griffin) actually had me thinking you were really leaving the show! Suspension of disbelief. success. Looking forward to the new season.

HAHA. that's a good one, i actually have been watching Indy Mogul since Erik's days and Backyard Effects, i love you guys so much

I use a Canon xa10 which has a nightvision function that I don't use much myself but it's cool to know its available.

we talk details.

reply

Not going to lie. this show really confuses me. Content wise is good, but overall it needs to be organized.
reply

I luv it, Indy Mogul meets the X-Files. I was hoping that Mulder & Scully would ring the door bell: -)
reply

I would ask you Griffin & Russell that which cheap camera should I buy for starting my video project?
