It's Friday, so we have a special feature for you! Two short films we produced in Las Vegas. But there was one rule that made this particularly challenging, and you'll find out how Russell's old MiniDV cam outperformed Griffin's Panasonic GH3!

Yeah, Volatile Productions is right, it was a quick fight! We found out our groups in the early afternoon, had to get together and brainstorm (which ended up not doing much at first because we couldn't think of an idea using the location until we got there, had to travel to the location, sneak in shots without having security kick us out (a few stories about that will be on Monday's recap, I'm sure, travel back to the hotel, and get the tape in on time for the viewing about 7-8 hours later!

I forgot digital cameras number stamp their files.
I have two 9. 5mm cine cameras, luckily there is one guy in England who buys and sells fresh stock from France with processing and TK.
I find shooting on film addictive, especially after shooting both B&W and colour super 16mm film. It's also cheaper for HD Telecine and processing than it is to rent and shoot on HD right now over here.

Set up my GH3 onto manual focusing and videoed my stopwatch.
It appeared to lose just under half a second at the start and when finishing cut off early by around 1. 2 seconds.
Cutting off early at the end is a bit irritating, but I always try to shoot over anyway.
Missing the start is annoying if you are out and about trying to catch scenes as soon as they start to develop.

I have the same problem with my Nikon coolpix l27. Unfortunatly I diden't know it was the camera and I thought it was my fault so I made sure to stop it at the right time. Now all my footage has the last bit of speech cut off the end of it. I also had this problem with my last stills camera but not my camcorder. Maybe it's somthing to do with photography cameras?

I remember having to do this exercise in both College and University. I can't really imagine doing this on a non-tape or film camera because people can simply cheat by deleting files or use the inbuilt edit options.
I've always wanted to do the straight 8 film challenge, but alas I have no super8 camera.

Oh geez, I didn't realize you didn't get the full day. I didn't mean to insult your films. I totally understand it's hard to come up with a story based on a location on the spot. I thought that best part of yours was the scene in the bathroom - the shot in particular where the first man with the map is revealed.

Wait, if you shot with two cameras Russell, and did the editing in-camera, how did you put the two final pieces of footage together without using a computer? You must have used a computer for that, right? And if so, wouldn't that technically be a violation against the rule of only doing the editing in-camera?

I use a Sony Alpha never had that problem with the audio or ending video. 6 secs early but I def agree with using dv tape for this challenge. I have/had a sony handycam (#TeamSony) and I would try to stop my takes at the exact second when I wanted to edit to next scene just to make editing that much easier

Hey Griffin, I have seen that you have not been very active recently, although I am Norwegian, and only 11 years old, but I understand a little, but absulutt not, you have something and hide from us, you that you should show us later, at least I trust you and use your tricks, you are a helpful guy!

Hey, we've recently started a podcast series chronically the production of our film. Project: Cyclone, for these last 8 months of production. I would really appreciate it if you would come and support us, as well as maybe come on as a guest if you're interested. Thank you.

Is it possible to edit video on a new tablet or smartphone. if that's what you are shooting the video on? Cause I don't have a laptop or a PC. I also don't need anything spectacular, just something that can get the job done at least half way decent.

That was a fun challenge and both of the films demonstrate very well how important audio is. The video was passable but the sound was horrid, as would be expected under these circumstances. nice. Me want more!

I have that same Panasonic mini dv cam!
I used to do stop motion with that thing, then I found much, much, more efficient ways. but I still use it sometimes when fooling around

This should be an Indy Mogul challenge. I'd love to see what crazy projects members of the community could put together with just a camera and no editing.

I think the statue was listening to that great narration. :P
I think my camera rounds up to the nearest whole second and keeps rolling until it gets there.

I just tested out my GH3 and it cuts off about 1. 2s off my footage! Never would have noticed it as a problem but perhaps its down the quality of SD storage.
reply

my canon 600d has the same problem after watching this video a decided to check it out and I noticed that its out by 0. 4 of a second stopping and starting

OMG talking about old DV camera, I bought Nalts's old Panasonic PV. camera which only has fire wire access. I just used it last month for a wedding.
reply

Oh man, I know! I couldn't believe I used to shoot all my videos like that and didn't ever consider sound when I was starting out, lol.

I got some freebies for you indie film makers out there! Check out my page for a bunch of free high quality sound effects: )
