This single game shows the scam of up[grading windows and all your other software every couple of years: I can still play Rise of Rome on Windows 7, with a slight graphics glitch on the ocean. The rest works well.
It hints, in my opinion, that both software and hardware developers work hand in hand to force the user to upgrade both software and hardware. That's fine for big corporations with bottomless pockets, but not so good for the home user.
I still like to lose a couple of hours with this game, where a lot of older games won't run on Windows 7.

Ahh, Age of Empires. I used to play the shit out of Dawn of the Modern World. Like most RTS games, the unit dialogue is seared into my brain.
-My liege? To the death! -
-Angry Gaelic noises-
Me and my brother used to always pick America. Their special monument was the Lincoln Memorial, which let you drop a ton of paratroopers everywhere on the map for free on a cooldown. So we'd just drop a bunch of paratroopers right in the enemies, and then nuking the absolute shit out of them. Ah, like true Americans.

Loved the video but have to disagree strongly. I love this game today as much as I did when it came out. Of coarse there has been better stuff since but I have never been able to stay away from this game for more than a year since it came out. Every year I find my self thinking. wow its been a while and then find my self 2 months into a benge with 10-15 hour games cluttering my save files that i wasnt able to finish in a single day and waking up in the morning to forget all about so a new war is conjured.

Age of Empires Gold Edition (a combo of AoE with the Rise of Rome expansion in one package) was the first PC game my parents bought me, and man, it was the greatest thing ever. I love history, and having a historic game with great graphics and music (for the time) was a revelation. It didn't age (pun intended) as well as Age of Empires II, but it's still a classic.

Age of Empires is one of those games that remind me that back then a sequel meant -Pretty much like the one before, but bigger, improved, and more beautiful. -. Nowadays when sequels even get made - instead of a steady stream of dlcs - it more often then not tries to be something completly different: /

This whole game had like it's own flavor. Like sometimes you really feel like eating some chocolate, and in the same way you randomly feel like playing this game. It's music, those caped Legion soldiers, their repetitive yet iconic movements and voices, even just the farming. This is peak nostalgia.

-Which is probably why Age of Kings has received a HD remake and the origional has been overlooked- - actually if you check steam AoE and AoE 2 are being released in a HD remaster collection on Nov 15 this year (2019)
As my bday is the 16th I know what I'm getting this year: -D

I love AoE, but Empire Earth was better. Although unrealistic, it allowed you to advance much further than the Imperial age. And it's a shame that game isn't available anywhere other than unreliable 3rd party sources like GOG. com.
