Who else still plays deathmatch? It's so surprising seeing such an old game have such an active community. I hopped on deathmatch for the first time yesterday and it was heart pumping fast pace combat. That daunting -prepare to fight- and the announcer and quirky hilarious lines as players are losing or winning is amazing. The online community is fun and hearing that computerized sound as someone types -lol, there's 4 archys in the corner- is always and always forever be engraved in my feeble mind. Taking on a triple kill with the ssg, strafe jumping to the BFG spawn, everything that everyone was already accustomed to was beginning to unfold into my eyes. Sure I played single player, and did personal speedruns and yadaydayda. But that first time looking at the server browser for zdaemon and connecting to a survival match and having four other Marines help me out with the difficult task of killing over 50 monsters in a room as the elevator goes up to reveal the hell spawn, will forever be stuck with me, as a zoomer 13 y/o.

Doom may have been an amazing game back then, but i doesnt hold up very well today imo. While i enjoyed the first episode thoroughly, the level design got more confusing in the later episodes. Dont get me wrong, when you have to fight a horde of demons or boss or heck, both at the same time in a large open space, its fantastic, but most of the time youll be aimlessly wandering around and backtracking to find keys and doors to progress, with no enemies to kill because youve killed them already. And i think that when people say that the soundtrack is great, they are only thinking about e1m1, which is about the only notably good soundtrack in the game, and most of the time u will be listening to an endlessly repeating track that just annoys u more than anything. All in all, doom just doesnt hold up very well.

I just wanted to say something regarding your comment in the video - -happy little side-effect of the engine where everything is dark in the distance-. This is not just a side-effect of the engine, this is a deliberate innovation by John Carmack. He created code that meant that as you moved further away from something the engine would change the colours to an increasingly darker hue from a preset colour pallet. Brilliant work as always and just one of many innovations (the dynamic lighting being another) in Doom by the guy that moved PC gaming forward so much!
Also - Carmack made his engine deliberately moddable!

I was in business school, and had network administrator class, where me and another guy finished our Windows NT installation and network setup early and tried to play Doom deathmatch. We couldn't get the network setting right in Doom, and work on it when our teacher stopped behind the other guy. For a minute he stood silent watching what's going on. The he asked -What are you doing? - Caught literally playing around we didn't feel line excusing and one of us told him we're trying to get Doom working in the network. He stood their silently for few seconds and said -It should work- and sat down to review our setups.

Love me some doom. But still my all time favorite FPS will always be Quake. The orginal Quake for me was so perfect in every way from atmosphere and level desgin to the soundtrack. Man I loved quake. Like with Doom the ones after just didnt have the same feeling as the the orginal did. Quake 2 was ok but lost something the first one did. Then quake 3 was just a copy of unreal tournament. I really wish they would do an HD remake of Quake. Maybe even add some new levels. I will never forget that weekend I got quake and loaded it onto my PC. Oh man I didnt sleep all weekend. Good times.

Just watched this video and thank you dude! you answered my all time question, what is the name of that game with a jetpack and a flamethrower as weapon. halloween harry! although this is not video related you really made me hype playing DOS games again. now I do only have one game in mind that I played when I was a young lad but didn't know the game name, all I can remember is I played it using our PC with WIN95 OS and the first scene is I'm all alone in a somewhat ship I dunno. hahahah! btw great video content as always keep it up 2020 style! hahahaha

Little fact Doom is actually 2. 5D as the maps are actually 2D and is one of the reasons that doors and moving things can only go up and down it's also the reason why if you go out of bounds the floor and ceiling go on forever with no end, however there is no doubt what John Carmack did in the early 90's was out right revolutionary in terms of technology and gameplay (along with John Romero, and others that worked on Doom such as American McGee)
There isn't a word that can summarize Doom except -Doom-

Damn! I had similar experience when first met Doom. I was visiting one of my elementary school teacher's home with mom, Her son probably is around 13-14 was playing Doom. I was completely mind blowing by this master piece. Later he taught me how to use keyboard and mouse to control movement and shoot things but I wasn't used to the control so I was playing very badly that time. He also show me a jet fighter sim I forget the name. Great time. This and C&C Red Alert later changed my life forever.

The first Doom I played was Doom 2 in 1995 without music. I still remember visiting my schoolfriend's house who had a fast 486 at that time. I did play Wolfenstein 3D a few years prior, which was awesome. When I saw and played Doom 2 for the first time, it totally blew my mind. I remember there was no music or the music volume was very low. That's how I always remember Doom as it best, although I like the music now, I still prefer playing Doom without music. It has a different feel to it.
