Dell Inspiron 9100: $4, 800 Pentium 4 Laptop from 2004

Among mid-2000s Windows XP notebook computers, the Inspiron 9100 was thoroughly into desktop replacement territory. Dell gave it a full desktop Pentium 4 CPU, a 16: 10 HD display, and even a built-in subwoofer! What a hot and heavy beast of a gaming laptop, portable workstation, and media center all in one

I loved mine that I had gotten second hand in 2008. It was a perfect upgrade coming from an Inspiron 1100 (smaller but also used a desktop processor. I was rocking this thing still in college back in 2012, running Windows 7 Ultimate and connecting it up to projectors in class for presentations.
I also made my own aluminum-shim mod to increase the cooling of the graphics card as well as used the SpeedFan app for Dell Inspiron's back in the day to make the cooling the most efficient while also staying very quiet. I'd say one of my most favorite laptops for back then even in 2012. It's hard plastics also allowed for plenty of bumps and bangs haha!

I remember when i got my 9600 in 2002 2003 ish. But for the big rig.
Went strat to playing UT2k4 and hl2. HL mods. Good stuff.
I barley afforded that. Wanted a 9800 but whatever.
I upgraded back in 2010 or something with a his Radeon. did upgrade it before that. Best card i googled that was supported for windows 98 machine. IDK where my other card went. Still struggled at unreal 3 cuz it didn't have duel core.
Is there even games worth wile that current windows have trouble running? gog exist and other stuff that have retro games.

Turning on that laptop is like starting up a Mustang. This thing is more like a mobile workstation than laptop, Lolz.
I wonder how long we shall wait for something from the year 2010 to make an appearance.
Those machines are probably at their cheapest right now and in 5-10 more years I bet they might go up in price.
My precision from 2010 with the dock is very much from a transitionary period, XP drivers and yet it can run 11 as well. USB 3 ports along with serial and parallel (on the dock.

This isnt much bigger or -worse- than my fairly modern predator. Hell it's smaller in x and y than the predator. Similar heat, similar mass, and similar battery life. But I don't get any modularity or the ability to clean my fans without pulling the whole heatpipe set and repasting everything each time. the dell speakers sound louder than mine too. and it has more ports: -

The mobility Radeon 9700 is basically a desktop 9600pro. I had this back in the day and played HL2 on it. Still have it. Recently got the Dell 2006 model for 50 bucks with a GeForce Go 7800 and a core 2 duo based Yonah CPU which should be enough for pretty much any game from the XP era. Almost as well as the 7800GT and Athlon 64 i had in my desktop back then.

Yep. Hardware like this was expensive back in the day.
But you kids of the future need to keep something in mind; this was an era when people payed money for music, movies, and porn.
And don't even get me started on what going to the library was like! Oh god it was a nightmare! And we were still just happy to have it!

Dude, I've got (a newer version of) this! It's got a mobile graphics card and less) RAM, but it stays cool on the hottest of days and is an overall more stylish version of the old one. The front-end light up media controls really makes it apparent they tried with the audio system on it, which is as banger as on the old one.

OMG, my laptop!
i had the burlwood lid/cover!
got it for HS graduation gift. but mine costed $1700 or so. it was base w/ the 60GB HDD. it lasted only 6 years or so though, the DC input jack stopped working, i tried soldering a new one in. still didn't work!
that woofer in the batter though, that was GREAT!

I'd love to have one of these back in 2004. We sometimes stayed in one of my parents' homes for the holidays, where I had no PC/console to cure my boredom with which's why I grew up wanting a laptop. As a long-time laptop user now, tho, I doubt this would last long in pre-teen me's possession. Hehe.

This reminds me a lot of my Dell Latitude D630. Only the latitude is thinner and not blue. But just do an image search for my model, you'll see the similarities in the keyboard interfacing. The latitude also has a flip switch for turning wifi on/off, and I replaced the drive bay dvd with a second battery.
