Reevaluating Doom 3 sixteen years later, released by id Software and Activision on August 3rd, 2004! Looking back at the hype and history of its development, its entirely new style of horror FPS gameplay compared to its predecessors, and of course that darned flashlight

I played this when it came out and boy was it a disappointment. So much that I did not play it ever again until recently when, seemingly out of nowhere it came out in VR and with Aim support no less.
I wasn't expecting it to be as good as VFR, which I had thoroughly enjoyed but hey, I get precious little chances to use that wonderful controller and maybe, just maybe I had been too hard on it back then.
Nope, as much as I'd like to say it didn't disappoint, it did, again. I think the design sensibilities were behind the times even in 2004. On the original gory, but ultimately cartoony Doom somehow it was OK that demons would patiently wait in a closet for you to walk by and jump out as soon as you turn your back, but in a more -realistic- environment, it just feels silly.
But its biggest downfall is how unmemorable the whole affair is. Its still moody and atmospheric, but after a while the levels feel too samey. At the end I could not tell one level from another. Nothing stands out.
Ultimately Id would redeem itself with Doom 2016, but Doom 3 will forever be the lesser doom.

First I couldn't remember how was Doom3, then it clicked. Yes, with HL2 and other games out in the market, it's not that it was bad, but I believe Half life ruined it for me in a certain way. I was already used to more mechanics and exploration in other fps games, that Doom 3 looked fantastic in graphics, but obsolete in game play. I still went through it, finished it in a day and kinda forgot about it. Sorry! There was just so many games out there! Knights of the Old Republic, then the Elder Scrolls series - Morrowind and then a few years later Oblivion. Also Farcry 1 and later Farcry 2. Doom 3 faded out of my memory pretty fast.
Meanwhile Doom 2 left a pretty big print in my memory, it was one of the first games I ever played on a PC and I loved looking for secrets and hidden places, trying to beat my previous record, etc.

There is a mod called -opencoop- which allows playing the campaign in multiplayer. It does not work on the BFG edition, only the retail version. It is quite fleshed out with features like pooling all excess health collected (respawns draw from this pool, items spawning per player so no stealing (can be disabled, scaling difficulty in terms of damage taken and dealt per player, additional difficulties past nightmare to really intensity things, simultaneous cut scenes so can enjoy the story together etc. The ideal way of enjoying the game, although the horror aspect is extremely diminished as it all becomes a joke with friends shooting the NPCs etc.
PS: An external patch 2. 2 fixes a lot of bugs and is highly recommended. We played it on the normal steam version. And port forwarding was required for us to detect the games.

I actually like this game despite some of my gripes (mostly shotgun related. It may not be the thing that comes to mind when the name -Doom- is brought up but I always appreciated it as a different take on a pre-existing source material. Think of the Evil Dead films. The original trilogy by Sam Raimi was campy comedy-horror, but there was a remake in 2013 by another director that set out to play the premise completely straight. That's sorta what happened with Doom. You had an original set of games in the 90s, and years later, someone came along to try to bring a new direction to the idea of the original games and give it a more serious edge, and I think Doom 3 succeeded at doing that.

13: 27 Always got lost on those pads. Went round and round in circles.
Doom 3 felt like a natural evolution of the game series for me. It took time to explain some aspects of the earlier games. Since Doom 3 was capable of good graphics, it didn't need as many circle strafe enemies. Graphics meant atmosphere, explanation of where you were, and something to look at. There were no graphics back in Doom 1, so it had to have another hook. .Although it would have been nice to have some mass enemy areas in Doom 3.
The Hell level of Doom 3 was excellent. (Really stayed with me) Better than Doom Eternal's Hell stuff. For me though, Eternal is a mess.

This is my favorite DOOM after playing through everyone of them. This one is my favorite even though it's different from it's brothers, it is fantastic. I wish they would create another Doom 3 type Doom game with new elements, graphics, sound but instead of being the DOOM Slayer you're just a badass Marine helping The slayer in your own side quest too destroy Hells coming invasion. Honestly if they created 2 Doom games that play off of each other were the first is from the perspective of the Doom Marine and the second game as the Doom Slayer himself with harder enemy types and a similar atmosphere of Doom 3.

I am replaying this right now on my Switch! Doom 3 remains one of my all time favorites! This game creeps me out and scares me still! One thing I absolutely love about Doom 3 is its terror atmosphere. This game truly gives you a feeling of dread and uneasiness. Almost 20 years later I still find it scary! Sure it lacks the fast paced run-and-gun action of Doom 2016, and Doom Eternal. But I enjoyed Doom 3 because it's a much slower paced game, and you worry about a monster leaping out at you around every corner! Doom 3 is all about the atmosphere, not the action! (Also love Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal BTW)

It's funny how he mentioned the flashlight gimmick. I bought doom 3 for the Nintendo switch and played it like I always would only to notice that you now have a flashlight that's now on ur armor so you don't have to switch from the handheld anymore. Honestly, I felt it gave me a challenge throughout the game, and just having it inserted to your body was alright but got annoying due to it running out of charge every minute. Seriously, I prefer the handheld light any day

This was the only game that ever truly scared me; I was TOO SCARED to proceed early on. It was that lighting! I do not scare easy.
Games still don't look any better than Doom 3, imo. I can't believe they pulled off rendering like this with 256mb vram. I know the environs are restricted, but g-damn. The simple clarity of it, combined with that subsurface scattering (I think) for the glowy skin. Does it still look totally cutting-edge to anyone else?

Back then and even today, I still like this game. It may not follow the tradition as the old and new games, I liked it because it was something new. It was more creepy, more horror styled, and I kinda want to say more of a realistic approach (if thats a thing for this series. There would be some stuff I would improve, things like enemies reacting to getting hit from the gun shots, iron sight view, and making the shotgun actually worth a damn.
