Gene Kelly was a wonderful star, dancer, singer and choreographer, but he was awful in his abusive training of Debbie Reynolds in Singing In The Rain--exceedingly long hours and he was not nice or patient with her to the point that her feet were so sore that they were blistered and bloody. She was a newcomer for goodness sake. Maybe he was jealous because every time she was off the screen you couldn't wait until she came back on. Many people believed that she should have been nominated for Best Actress that year. Gene Kelly always bad-mouthed her whenever SITR WAS MENTIONED after that, but she went on to have a distinguished career. At least she never made as bad a movie as he did when he made XANADU. His direction was bad for HELLO DOLLY also. He was a wonderful triple threat entertainer but with a mean streak at times. Despite all this everyone in this, my favorite musical, is flawless. He was such an incredible choreographer that he didn't need to denigrate her beginner's skills. The blemish was on his career and not her's. Needless to say, sometimes he was not so suave a gentleman.

Should make a part 2 with scenes like
Fit as a fiddle
Binge scene (always fair weather)
Moses supposes
The hat me dear old father wore (take me out to the ball game)
Take me out to the ball game with Frank Sinatra
New York, New York, with Sinatra and Jules Munshin
Dig dig dig for your supper (Summer Stock)
Slaughter on 10th Ave (Words and Music)
Main Street (On the Town)
Sitting Dance with Donald OConnor during the 1959 TV special

Only one complaint. in the Honorable Mentions. under Whenever You're Away From Me which is a duet with Olivia Newton-John, you show instead the opening roller skating opening of the song Xanadu with all of the 1980s roller-disco kids. both are great displays of Kelly's abilities in what was his final film appearance. However. I'd rather have seen him and Olivia Newton-John. Other than that. I loved this!
reply

That was not Whenever you're away from me. It was the start of the Xanadu segment when they first open for business. Whenever you're away from me was set in the ballroom at Danny's mansion and sung with Olivia Newton John.

As much as I love the dance routine in 'Singing in the Rain' and it most certainly is iconic, IMO his best dance was the American in Paris ballet - it had everything in it and was extremely romantic.

The Broadway Melody sequence with Cyd Charise in Singin in the Rain is boring and self indulgent. It kills the energy, momentum and sense of fun stone dead. I always fast forward through it.

These are great videos but could do without the narration. It really takes away from just watching and taking it in. On all the MsMojo videos the commentary is really annoying. Thanks,

Don't forget, when he was doing the Singing In the Rain number he had a 102 degree F fever yet still managed to perform one of the greatest dance solos in film ever made.

There's no need to narrate what we can see with our own eyes. I wanted to see Kelly dance to the music. I didn't hear much music, just rather invasive--and pointless--narration.
reply

If were watching gene Kelly dance in perfect time to the music, the last thing that we need is someone talking over it. Just let the artistry speak please.

The man appeared to defy physics while dancing, its like he floats with ease, an unnatural, magical vision and expression of talent, sadly missed.

He is one of the greats! Voice, dance moves, tap, acting, and a handsome fella. They dont come like him anymore.
Truly an amazing, everything!

You've got ballin' the jack, but not Moses Supposes? Really? And that dance with Mizti Gaynor, but nothing from On the Town with Vera Ellen?
reply

Too much noisy narrative, too little Gene Kelly and music. Please leave your ego be silent and rely on credit for your good editing.
reply

There were so many generous kelly dances that were better than some on this list, but regardless it's gene Kelly so I'm good with it
reply

How could that Mike Jackson guy be voted a better dancer than Gene Kelly? I guess the self proclaimed woke crowd counted those votes.
reply

There are a number of dance numbers in the movie Singing in the rain that are way better than the singing in the rain number.
reply

No doubt Singing in the Rain is number one! The duet with Gene and Fred Astire should have been a little higher on the list.
reply

What made Singing in The Rain and Gene's performance all the more amazing, was he was doing it with a 104 degree fever
reply

How I envy your stepmom, Karen lee! how. MANY times have you asked to hear this story - and see her show the steps?
reply

how annoying narrator! I can very much figuring things out his performances! Please be quiet and let me enjoy it!
reply

Where is Xanadu? Oh honorable mention Just purely Loved him in that film along with Olivia Newton-John Both RIP

Garbage Can Dance (It's Always Fair Weather) is better than Ballin' The Jack, La Cumparsita or I Like Myself
reply

Personally, I feel like La Cucaracha should be listed higher, if not number one. anyone else agrees?
