As usual, there are so any that could be in this list, but, with one exception, I cannot disagree with your list. I 100% disagree with Caberet. I am 72 and actually saw an original touring company of Caberet and I loved it, when the movie version came out, I enjoyed it even though they made some substantial changes to the stage play. Changes to the a stage musical prior to filming is not unusual, somethimes it works, sometimes it doesn't (for example not working might include Cats and a Chorus Line, two other musicals I had seen on stage prior to the movie being released. Sadly, after the musical I went to see the stage version of Cabaret (one of all time favorites prior to this, only to find out that they had adapted the stage version to mimic the movie, rather than keeping them as two seperate entities.

I am very happy you The Sound of Music as number 1 since it is one of my all time favourite musicals and movies. But I also think Oliver! deserved a spot. I wouldn't change anything about the musical but the movie made great changes to make it cinematic like moving the irrelevant act two opener to become the pre-climax number, making the song incredibly tense and desperate and is one of my favourite scenes in cinematic history. It would be my pick along with The Sound of Music. I also think Mamma Mia! should have been mentioned since it has become more well known than the stage show and is a wonderful adaptation, considering they cut it down to an hour and a half.

The Les Miserables movie adaptation isn't even on here? You do realize that was the first musical to actually sing live on set without prerecorded singing and lipsycing, right? Even is some of the cast members werent the best choices or a few songs were cut/shortened. but just that fact enough makes it deserve at least acknowledgement.
(Glad Fiddler on the Roof at least made it to honorable mentions. that movie was well made)

I was sad last year when Christopher Plummer passed. I had a bit of a crush on him as Captain von Trappe. The scene when the Captain and Maria dance together is one of my favorites. FYI, if you are ever in Vermont, visit the Trappe Family Lodge. It's a beautiful inn nestled in the mountains. They took that climb every mountain bit literally It's said they chose that location because it reminded them of the Austrian Alps.

I agree with # 1 and #2, but not definitely don't know why Sweeney Todd was included, nor Hairspray but no mention of South Pacific, Carousel or the King and I. And Fiddler on the Roof definitely deserved more than an honorable mention. My top 10 would have been, Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, The King and I, South Pacific, Oklahoma, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Cabaret

Maybe there hasn't been enough musical adaptations from Broadway to TV to rank them, but I'd love to see a video on some of the best musicals on TV (Broadway or not, live or not, like the 1999 Disney version of Annie (also directed by Rob Marshall, or earlier live shows in the 50s and 60s, like Annie Get Your Gun or Cinderella, or Once Upon a Mattress.

You had me going there for a moment msmojo, cats? sneaky sneaky lol
The Sound of Music was the first musical I remember seeing. My Grandmother adored Julie Andrews and this film was on heavy rotation in her house where I spent a lot of my childhood. Been over 30 years and this is still one of my go to comfort movies.

I always considered Cabaret to be the best film adaptation of a musical, having also seen the original on Broadway. The film had the advantage of using incredible editing to interweave the fantasy of the emcee's songs with the real-life horror that was going on in the streets of Berlin. The effect was mind-blowing.

I honestly love both West Side Story (1961) and The Sound of Music (1965) from Robert Wise.
Both are great Oscar winners for both Best Director & Best Picture from him. It's hard to say who's better cause. There both Iconic's and a lot of reference's to them in Pop Culture.

sorry but I do not agree with Dreamgirls. I think it's overrated but Jennifer Hudson definitely deserved the Oscar. I also think Sweeney Todd and Hairspray are overrated
and you missed easily one of the best movie musicals ever: Singing in the Rain

Eliza, meanwhile, was played by Audrey Hepburn.
Eliza sings
Don't you mean Marnie Nixon?
Although Marnie Nixon dubbed most of her singing.
Okay, that's better.
Thanks for at least mentioning The Music Man!

I agree with #1, but so many were missed! Phantom, Les Mis, The Wiz, Annie, Mamma Mia, Rent, The Last Five Years, Evita, Gypsy, Godspell and Oklahoma would also be on my list. So many great ones you can't possibly get them all.

Now that wasnt even funny (it was actually hilarious. Im screaming, What about the Sound of Music? And then you said, Number One: The Sound of Music. Very nicely played. Using Cats as the fake though was very provocative.

I quite agree with you - The Sound of Music with the incomparable Julie Andrews is teally the best, greatest musical movie adaptation. I do think Godspell should have been mentioned too. It is so cool.

First of all, West Side Story is way overrated. Secondly, how is Hairspray not higher! And third, seriously, Rocky Horror Picture Show only an honorable mention! Blasphemy, I tell you!

I think Les Miserables should've been on there. although Russel Crowe did terrible, that shouldn't be enough to bring down the rest of the amazing talent that was in the movie adaptation

. Hairspray (that is nothing compared to the original movie) makes the list and not Rocky Horror Picture Show? Also the Sound of music is boring and overrated, it has like 2 good songs.

Fiddler on the Roof should be on the actual list and not just an honorable mention. And I think Annie should have had an honorable mention, but otherwise, great list!

The fact that you put Dreamgirls at #10 and not in the Top 5 is totall B. S. It's way better than most of the other movie musical adaptations on here.

How is hairspray even on this list? They changed half the plot! I almost walked out of the theater when I saw it I was so disappointed in it.

The only excuse you can possibly have for Les Mis not being here is Russel Crowes performance and even then, it isn't much of a take-back
