These movie musicals should NEVER be remade. For this list, well be looking at the most notable films that should be left alone, either because theyre already perfect, or because of questionable subject matters. Our countdown includes The Sound of Music, A Star Is Born, Chicago, and more! Which movie musical do YOU think should never be remade?

I disagree with Chicago. My reason, I saw it with Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera, two real dancers. The cast on Broadway also included Jerry Orbach, whom I saw years before in, The Three Penny Opera playing Mack the Knife. So when I saw these three actors that are competent, but still mediocre in comparison, it was pretty hard to watch. They also excluded the song Class, but maybe it was to controversial. A Star is Born. I love Barbra and Lady Gaga, but again Judy killed it. It's like all the people who try to sing, Over the Rainbow. I agree with all your choices, your honorable mentions and I knew before you got to the end it was going to be, Singing In the Rain. I would like to mention an iconic film that was not mentioned with Fred Astaire and that was, Bandwagon and the very famous dance sequence at the end that inspired Michael Jackson's, Smooth Criminal, to the white suit, hat and stance, aside from some of the choreography. Two other musicals that changed modern musical theatre was Oklahoma and Westside Story. Oklahoma for using songs to advance the plot and Westside Story for using dance as a vehicle to also advance the story. Oh, let me just mention if someone asks about Porgy and Bess, that was written as an opera and the movie was OK.

I agree with most of this list, but I wanna say that Cabaret the movie should not be remade. but the movie is very different than the stage musical (though ingeniously capturing and expressing the same things just as successfully, and there is room for a movie OF the stage version. I think you're underestimating the stage version(s) massively if you think the movie's changes made it work when the stage version wouldn't have worked. they'd work differently but both are genius. Given how many movie stars have now done it on stage, I'm still shocked a film wasn't made, directed by Sam Mendes, with Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson, or Cumming and Michelle Williams or Cumming and Emma Stone. let alone someone like Toni Collette who hasn't done it on stage but would kill it.

Well after all the movies shown, I have a few memorable movies that I think SHOULD NOT be remade
Anything with the talented Gene Kelly, like Singing in the rain or
American in Paris (What a huge talent on so many levels)
Of course the delightful Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins and Sound of Music. Both films should not be remade
Loved Topal in Fiddler on the Roof. Leave well alone, for many reasons can't replace the characters and time frame
Some of my favourite movies are
1939 Wizard of Oz
1978 Grease
1968 Oliver
Barbra Streisand, A Star Is Born
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Browsing through all these comments there is only one mention of the musical that I think should never be remade and that is Calamity Jane. I am fortunate enough to be of an age that saw this musical when it was first shown and it brought a refreshing joy to the cinema with Doris Day's performance. Perhaps it was not considered by MsMojo because there are no memorable dance numbers but the songs and story stand out. It still is constantly shown on British television and my children and grandchildren still seem to appreciate it in this digital age.

Mary Poppins is one of the greatest films ever made of all time. One that should never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever infinity be remade! If I could control things, I would have it win the Best Picture Oscar of 1964 and replace Mary Poppins Returns with a remake of My Fair Lady with Emily Blunt as Eliza Doolittle and have that be the Best Picture winner of 2018 instead of Green Book and have Emily Blunt win Best Actress instead of Olivia Colman!

As good as the movie Cabaret anyone who saw the two Broadway revivals with Alan Cumming knows that it could be done without Joel, Liza & Bob. As for Chicago it should be remade with actors who can actually dance and a director that shows them doing so rather than going for closeups and multiple shots. As for Gigi, please explain why the story of a girl who is being prepared for life as a courtesan but ends up marring the man she loves should be considered creepy.

You know, I'm shocked MGM didn't attempt a Singin' in the Rain legacy sequel in the late-70's like they did for National Velvet, with Don & Kathy's children dealing with the competition of TV in the early-1950's.
Also don't remake Cover Girl or Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
Those would be sleazy abominations on par with the horrid A Star is Born remakes. Also no Gene Kelly or Marilyn Monroe. :(

reply

I'm sorry. SEVEN BRIDES should NEVER be remade, NOT because of 'questionable' subject matter but because NO ONE IN HOLLYWOOD CAN DANCE LIKE THAT TODAY. The barn dance sequence alone was beyond spectacular, and it was shot in ONE take, with NO injuries to the dancers! That type of thing would be UNTHINKABLE today--and btw, I LOVE the story too! My all-time FAVORITE musical, for myriad reasons!

After being an addict of all things Mojo, this is the ONLY, I repeat ONLY list Ive agreed with 100%! I wish it would have however been longer including so many of the ones listed in the comments below Especially The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Music Man, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Hello Dolly and yes Im putting it out there, remaking any other of film adaptation of RENT would be criminal!
reply

Flower Drum Song should have been on this list. It is one of the finest musicals ever made, with a tremendous cast of actors and dancers that showed the sheer talent of the Asian-American community. It's not demeaning in any way. The dream sequence with James Shigeta's character Wang Ta and Reiko Sato's Helen is one of the best I have ever seen.

you know how kids will watch a single movie over and over and over and over again? the Sound of Music was that for me. then I didn't watch it for a number of years, and watched it again as an adult - and was BLOWN AWAY by how much of the story I'd missed as a child. also - Maria Von Trapp herself makes a blink and you'll miss it cameo in the film.

Your expectation that any film made before the insanity of today, is in itself INSANE! There isn't anything wrong with the past. the problem is the present. The spoiled brats, that the liberal education of indoctrination has produced, is the problem. Don't remake Xanadu. If these statements make you crumble, then try sucking your thumb.
reply

I wish more viewers. Saw FLOWER DRUM SONG. ONLY musical involving Asian people. And 3 generational outlook's. Elders Americanized younger adults, and very young asian kids. Also had VERY strong female characters. should not be forgotten, in my opinion. Look it up, folks, you might be pleasantly surprised.

though i agree with most of this, how could you not mention The Wiz when talking about The Wizard of Oz? Its a very important remake and Diana Ross is beyond amazing as Dorothy! The songs are changed granted, so I guess you could say its not a true remake, but its an unexpected amazing one none the less
reply

Please never mess with any Gene Kelly films. Also sound of music. We need to stop talking about the being pc and enjoy them for the time they were made. Go Wizard of Oz and Fred Astaire movies and the original Grease. I grew up in the age of the teddy boys. The hair combing was real
reply

I agree with everything on this except, A Star is Born seems like it doesn't quite fit. It should be another list of things like, films that need to stop being remade or something. But I agree with the rest. Singing in the Rain is still one of my favorite films to this day.
reply

Yes, my dear MsMojo, there are many movies which should not be done as remake - what is a professional name for movie like this. - There are also some exeptions. Some of them are beter if not the same only. - Try to make more on Producers, Willy Wonka or a Birdcage. Good luck!
reply

I disagree with the Wizard of Oz simply because the movie was inaccurate and nothing like the book. Personally, I would like a closer adaptation. I would like to see the other lands, and see its relation to the city of Chicago and the World's Fair, as was the inspiration.
reply

Talking about movie musical classics why did Steven Spielberg feel so adamant about re-making West Side Story? I was appalled. Also, why did they feel the need to make I suck at footloose movie? It was horrible. Quit grasping at old ideas that are already perfect.
reply

The musical movie which cannot be made, never and for any reason, is gentlemen preferes blondes. Jane Russell and Marylin Monroe made it uncomparable. No one ever should try to fill their shoes, It's just a fun gem that we should cherish
reply

How can you find anyone who can play Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof better than Topol.
Oliver was a horrible musical, maybe the worst ever. The song Who will buy started well but then got weird, and that was the best part of the musical.

reply

I'm not sure which I found more revolting: the pretentiousness of Baz Luhrman in Moulin Rouge, or the miscasting of the three leads in Chicago. Hollywood studios and their casting preferences ruined many of the greatest Broadway musicals.
reply

The Music Man. There is no one like Robert Preston in that role.
It has been tried but, the results were dismal.
After seeing it, I found the West Side Story remake, entertaining, but still not as good as the original.

reply

West Side Story should be on that list. Moulin Rouge should have never been made, it is awful and a monument to bad taste, I agree with a Star is Born, that should have stopped at The Garland adaptation.
reply

Moulin Rouge. Personally think Ewan McGregor should also have been given an academy award for his performance. Nicole Kidman surprised everyone. And Come what may just breaks your heart! In a good way.
reply

Some musical films are SO good that they should NEVER be touched. Prime example, the Wizard of Oz (1939) AWESOME film, yet some nobody wants to do a remake with 'alphabet' representation - WHY?
reply

I would like to add a film the might or might no be considered a musical but should never be remade
A Hard Days Night. What's the point in remaking this film without the Beatles.

reply

Hollywood or Disney could never match up to these classics today because people cannot sing or dance like these Legends can. They need to come up with something new and fresh
reply

The Sound of Music is unmatched imo and Hollywood better never try to remake it because nothing could possibly be as good as Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer together.
reply

So the lesson here is
NEVER remake a Julie Andrews movie
NEVER remake a Gene Kelly movie
Pretty much dont touch the classics. Theyre classics for a reason
