There hasn't been a Pixar film quite like Turning Red. For this list, well be looking at how Pixars latest animated feature differs from the studios past projects and changes the game. Our countdown includes the female friendships, the representation, the animation style, and more! What did YOU think of Turning Red?

I don't think it breaks the fourth wall. It's part of the intro before the actual movie begins.
I also disagree with the movie's conclusion that kids are only able to be attracted to others after the reach puberty.
Making the period a part of the plot is a first, and hopefully a last. Will the next Pixar movie focus on boys and nocturnal emissions?
In The Little Mermaid, family conflicts is simply a plot device. In movies like this, family conflicts is part of the main plot. Which I personally find a bit boring.
Her friends were also too much of caricatures. The girl with the nose piercing was like Daria Morgendorffer, the chubby girl was too aggressive and loud to be realistic, and the one with the braces was very forgettable. It was like they were given different trademarks just for the audience to be able to tell them apart.

I absolutely ADORED Turning Red. The fact that I grew up and live in Toronto just brought up so many memories like the SkyDome (renamed to Roger's Center. eww, Tamagotchi, and older streetcars.
I had a lot of Chinese and Korean friends growing up and it's nice to see how they honored the traditions. I also love the fact that female puberty is talked about as well as how the film is centered around friendships and growing up.
It hit a personal note with the relationship she had with her mom, especially at the end. As a new parent myself and growing up somewhat with a controlling mom, it hits home.
I loved it!

The movie was so good I watched it twice. I have a 2-year-old nephew who likes this film because of the red panda that he finds funny.
Director Domee Shi did a splendid job in directing her first full-length feature for Pixar. It makes the concept of female adolescence and family lifestyles from an Asian perspective feel normal and nothing to be embarrassed about.
The red panda design is clearly a nod to Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro, while the transformation of becoming a red panda and reverting back is reminiscent to the comedic nature of Ranma 1/2.

I really want to say turning red or Encanto are my favorite animated movies of all time until these came out it was always Rapunzel but man these movies are just absolutely amazing and I think the more I learn about turning red the more I want to say that it is my favorite. I was born in 2003 and I had the Tamagotchi and twilight, I didn't have NSYNC or Backstreet Boys but it really is like my life as a kid even though I am on the later side of the 2000s.

Not gonna lie, I actually found Turning Red to be a step down for Pixar. And ironically, Encanto pixared better than Pixar themselves. The thing I liked about Brave is that Merida and her mother BOTH learned from their mistakes and became closer through that experience. But here, with Turning Red, that sort of thing is gone. Mei's just all I'm right and you're wrong mom and there's nothing you can do about it! Pretty disappointing if you ask me.

I love this movie, and I honestly don't think it could've been made back when John Lasseter was in charge. I'll always admire what he accomplished at Pixar, but he was inappropriate towards women and cultivated a misogynistic atmosphere in the studio. It's never a good thing when that happens, and Turning Red is proof that Pixar is breaking out of that mindset.

I think of Turning Red is a good movie from Disney and Pixar on Disney Plus like The Fourth Wall Breaks and Ludwig Goransson's Musical Score and The Canadian Setting and The Early 2000s Nostalgia and The Comedy and The Animation Style and The Representation and The Mature Subject Matter and The Female Friendships and The All-Female Creative Team

When I first saw the characters, I thought that Abby might be a girl with Down's syndrome. As a teacher who works with Downs kids, I was very excited to see that addressed. It didn't turn out to be the case, but ever since Dory had a memory problem, I've enjoyed seeing challenges brought into the mainstream in these animated movies.

This movie reminds me so much of myself at age thirteen and of myself now as an adult with my best friend, especially since were really close and are looking forward to going to a concert together soon (on May 17) and even though Im grown up, I even have to deal with parental anxiety too.
reply

Wait really? The movie's animation was inspired by Fruits Basket! Now that I think about it, when the zodiac family turns into their zodiac animals, they go poof with smoke and that's where Mei's transformation was inspired from. Whoa.
Now I have to finish watching Fruits Basket

Pixar told what:
Turning Red does for Canada
Coco does for Mexico
Brave does for Scotland
Luca does for Italy
Disney itself told what:
Both The Sword in The Stone and The Black Cauldron do for Wales
Encanto does for Colombia

If Turning Red is supposedly set around the time me and Amanda McQuaid were in espanol class, its more than likely that Mei and her crew went to see Treasure Planet, maybe because they found Jim hot lol Abby looks like shed be into Pirates

And some people still twist this movie as cultural crime. Guess who did such accusation? American. Their perspective is soooo poluted with racism, you know, what you accuse is projection from what inside your head

Turning Red has become my favorite Pixar film next to Ratatouille. Ive always been considered weird because of my mix of interests (anime, theatre and video games) and this movie made me feel better about myself
reply

I like Turning Red. Obviously its not the best Pixar film ever made, but this movie tried something different and didnt shy away from mature topics. I appreciate that, Disney doesnt do that often

i love this movie as a 14 year old, mei mei is so cute and reminds me when i was in primary school around her friends! i think its a relatable and adorable: D and i love 4town hahah heheh
reply

Wait so Ming knew Mei would turn into a red panda and she chose to say nothing before she did. That's like someone telling you that your car was stolen two hours after it got stolen.

i get that period blood comes from a different place, but its pretty much just like a wound that bleeds for days on end. whats so gross about it if you can tolerate a wound?
reply

I really enjoy the normalization of periods but I do got to say I just dont think May is a likable character in my opinion. Of course this differs from most people opinions
reply

I watched this with my Littles sister and it even spoke to me in a way telling me to be myself and stop trying to please everyone and the world doesn't revolve around me
reply

I didnt like it at all! I think that its inappropriate for kids. Imagine a little boy watching this. its the parents job to tell the kids about periods not movies.
reply

My stepmom slightly ruined this movie for me because she explained how the movie portrays periods. Its a decent film, but why wont people stop talking about it?
reply

My god. Turning Red did what High Guardian Spice failed: have an all female cast but who made something good because they have the experience and are qualified!
reply

This movie is in my Top 3 Pixar movies on Disney+ (original. Next to Soul (2020, Luca (2021. all three are awesome to watch with your familys.

Brave is the first Pixar movie to be directed by a woman.
Turning Red is the first Pixar movie to be directed by AND ONLY a woman.

reply

8: 14 - You just talked about anime right before this point, so I think you really meant to say The ANIMEtion style right here
reply

I loved Turning Red! The music is insanely good (including 4Town) and its overall an amazing movie. I recommend this to everyone: )
reply

An overprotective mother and a curious, outgoing child.
Yes. Luca and Turning Red are not so different from each other.

reply

Okay, if they make a Disney plus series of turning red, they HAVE to bring bake the fourth wall breaks. It's the best part!
