You'll find that most of us in the industry would disagree with this list. Maybe 3 of them should stay and only one of them at it's current placement (I thought I was going to die doing The Confrontation lol) Songs like Bring Him Home and Memory certainly have to have a huge emotional connection and good technique to pull it off, but a decently trained high schooler can pull them off. Wipped Into Shape is by far the most difficult song in Legally Blonde. It takes stamina, both physically and emotionally. Color and Light from Sunday In The Park With George is widely considered the most difficult song in musical theatre for a man. It's extremely complex. If you can count, you can do Your Fault easily. It's 4 notes over and over. It just depends on the tempo and most music directors slow it down (which is a mistake. It's actually easier at warp 9) And I Am Telling You (I'm Not Going) Shou be at the top of this list. It's by far the most difficult song to perform. There are veterans who won't touch it because of how hard it is. (Audra McDonald comes to mind. You know, the most decorated Tony winner of all time)

I think Newsies Sante Fe could definitely make this list. The sheer emotion and volume of the song is breathtaking and gives me chill. The more I watch it, the more it feels like the character is pulling the song out of the depths of his soul, not the actor. It is truly a shows stopping number that takes an incredibly talented, experienced, and specific kind of performer to pull off.

one that ill always bring up is the ballad of jane doe from ride the cyclone. she flies, guys. emily rohm (who is the album voice as well as multiple american tours) flies, and literally flips over while singing some of these notes. its hard on its own, but the choreo usually makes it a million times cooler. definitely go check that out if youve never heard of it

Not trying to brag but i want to understand how adding emotion to singing makes singing harder? Adding the theater part to musical theater is what makes it fun for me so i want to understand how this adds difficulty. It may be the perfect pitch and the autism (and the luck of having a huge range) but I find most of these pretty easy (now im bragging lol)

Okay but Beetlejuice required a mutation in Alex Brightmans vocal cords. Also the only reason Your Fault made it into this list is because of everyone singing their own lines at the same time at different parts, but Do you want to go to heaven? From Big River is just as, if not more complex.

The title said Modern broadway so i was expecting anythign made after 2000s. yet we still have entries from into the woods, les mis, J & H, Phantom, Dream girls.
There are so many newer musicals that deserve to be highlighted against all these already very established musicals.

Ok I need someone to bring up the Ballad of Jane Doe from Ride the Cyclone because not only is it super hard vocally, the actor has to FLY and SPIN in the air while SINGING! If you dont know it look it up its legitimately breath taking. Youll think its CGI.

This felt more like a list of their favorite bangers rather than a list of most difficult songs. Some definitely deserve being on this list, but the fact that Jekyll and Hyde's Confrontation only made number 10 was borderline insulting
reply

Of course, I never agree with your picks. But you came closest than ever. I would have picked Phantom the operas number one. And for number ten, I would have pirates a Penzance major general Other then that you were on the money

On a tour of Ireland, we ended up at a show house just outside of Dublin where a guy who had played Jean Valjean on the West End (allegedly) tried to sing Bring Him Home. It was the most awful rendition I have ever heard.

So Mandy Gonzales was Angelica in Hamilton for over Six Years. Ive actually met her three times! When I went to Hamilton I met her after the show. I have literally seen this woman walking down the street with her daughter.

World burn from mean girls is another one I believe should have an honorable mention. The person who played Regina in my school while singing, this had a voice crack on stage because of how many notes Regina had to sing
reply

i feel like you cant stop the beat from hairspray deserves an honorable mention, the intense choreography plus the nonstop lyrics make for a very challenging song that the cast nicknamed you cant stop to breathe
reply

Not in a bad way, But it speaks for Jennifer Hudsons pipes and acting(also possibly her skilled managment team getting her said rolls) that she keeps showing up in roles with one of the more iconic songs.
reply

The idea that anything from Dear Evan Hanson, a sort of standard Tenor part, is more difficult than an actor having to portray two completely different characters and voices AT THE SAME TIME is bonkers.

I'm here from the color purple is beautiful to listen live, i cried really hard. And i am telling you is my fav musical song ever and so is defying gravity. Wicked is my fav musical
reply

It makes sense that only broadway musicals were included but I was glad that Dead girl walking from heathers was mentioned because there are so many powerful notes in that song.
reply

I feel like Epiphany should at least be an honorable mention, when I practiced it for an audition it took a lot of energy and after a few nights it wore down my voice a little
reply

Love this list! Find Your Grail from Spamalot is another hard song to sing - belting and also the comedic aspect you have to bring. Sara Ramirez's version is perfect!
reply

Id argue that Guns and Ships from Hamilton is much harder to sing. But this list seems to be about the power of the voice, and not the complexity of the rhythm and lyrics.
reply

For real, DEH is above Confrontation? Kids I went to musical school with could sing Evan's role.
Jekyll/Hyde is probably one of the most difficult male roles ever.

reply

I'm convinced Ben Platt made it to where he is today through sheer tenacity alone. He is not a good singer. He is not a good actor. He has no stage presence.
reply

am i the only one that doesn't find satisfied that hard? i mean it needs really, really good and strong feelings to sing but the notes are not that hard for me
reply

i do not know if it was ever on broadway but 'tell me it's not true' from blood brothers deserves an honarable mention just for the raw emotion it takes
reply

You know youve listened to/watched Hamilton too many times when you are able to rap Guns and Ships and sing the 5th hardest song to sing on broadway: )
reply

Ewan McGregor sang Christians parts of El Tango De Roxanne waaaaay better than Aaron & personally I think Think of Me from Phantom is a better song.
reply

I would like to add the ballad of Jane doe from ride the cyclone. Those high long whistle notes along with flying and spinning upsidedown? Insane.
reply

Ive sang the phantom of the opera songs and hit the notes some how Ive had no lessons Ive just taught myself by warmups and things like that
reply

someone should put ballad of jane doe in here. the actress has to belt out high notes whilst flipping upside down and flying in the air
reply

Your fault is a hard song to memorize
also me and my sister singing it all casually, both of us assigned multiple parts
