Nothing motivates us than an I Want song. For this list, well be looking at times our favorite musical theater characters sang out their biggest and deepest desires, inspiring us to chase our own. Our countdown includes Funny Girl, In the Heights, Hamilton, and more! Which I Want song helps YOU hit the ground running?

I can see Tyler Perry or Jordan Peele directing an all-black version of the Little Shop of Horrors movie, and I would totally go see it.
Also, since the chorus in the first version was an all-black soul group, why not change them to all white girls who sing like the Andrews Sisters to make it funny?

_Go The Distance_ should be on this list. Its a great song about wanting to make something out of your life. I always envision a day where people will give me the respect I deserve because Ive put in so much effort and not have it pay off. This song gives me the motivation to keep going.

The I Want song is much more based on the function the song serves in the show. There are some way better I want song then some of these because The Impossible Dream and Being Alive definitely shouldnt be considered I want songs based on a musical theater history and function definition

Just this morning I was singing Everybody Says Don't to myself: ) I love Barbra Streisand's cover of the song, as well as A Quiet Thing/There Won't Be Trumpets and her songs from Funny Girl - I'm so glad they made the list!

No no no no no! The number one I want song should have been the sun'll come out tomorrow bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow they'll be sun tomorrow tomorrow I love you tomorrow you're only a day away from Annie!

How, how, how did you miss Wouldn't it be loverly from My Fair Lady? It's an older musical, but the homeless lead is someone a lot of people can identify with, especially people who can't afford Broadway tickets.
reply

There's Go To Be Something Better Than This, from Sweet Charity; I Dared to Dream, from Les Mis. ; I've not seen the movie musical, Cyrano with Peter Dinklage, but there ought to be an I Want. song in that.

I wish MOJO had done some deeper digging. Scott Bacula, as Sam Beckett, sang Impossible Dream on Quantum Leap.
Bacula is such an incredibly versatile actor, and his is my favorite version of the song.

Even with more than the usual number of honorable mentions, I can't believe you didn't include Wouldn't It Be Loverly from My Fair Lady. Literally, the first three words of the song are all I want.

Far from Skid Row, I dream we'll go somewhere that's green and Out of the sea. wish I could be part of that world sound so similar, even more so when you realize Ashman and Menken wrote them both.
reply

Somewhere That's Green is so wistful and bittersweet, all at once. Audrey just dreams of a better life with Seymour, which is even more tragic if you know the ending of the original stage musical.

I love this lyric so much. So, so much.

i love My Shot from Hamilton, it's one of Lin-Manuel Miranda's best written and it took him a year to write, it's the first song i heard when i first heard about Hamilton

I hope theyll be a list of top 10 animated I want songs. Since theres now a vast foray of them now. Unless there is a list already its just further down in my memory
reply

I feel that being alive hits more when a man sings it cause men arent usually vulnerable about their feelings and when they are its freakin beautiful.
reply

My own personal thought on if I were a rich man. He really just wants more time to spend in the holy book. Because it is more of a whisper then singing loudly.

What about the song Into the Woods (Prologue) from the titular musical play? Or even My Friends, or A Little Priest from Sweeney Todd for a twist.
reply

Belle, in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, has a mighty powerful What I Want song. Belle (the song that many people call Little Town) and its reprise.
reply

A true I want song. Someone like you from Jekyl & Hyde is a powerhouse! Linda Eders performance is both amazing while being gut wrenching.
reply

I Want It All
High School Musical 3: Senior Year
It isn't from a stage musical, but that song always awakens my ego.

reply

I love My Shot. You can almost get a glimpse of Alexanders never-satisfied part of his personality. Its like foreshadowing.
reply

Freaking love My Shot. Saw Hamilton a few months ago in London and it was phenomenal. It's definitely an inspiring song.
reply

Totally disagree - Legally Blonde doesnt belong on the list at all and Dont rain on my parade is the undisputable No. 1
reply

Both Goodnight My Someone and My White Knight from The Music Man. Also, Wouldnt It Be Loverly from My Fair Lady.
