A theory I have that puts the whole show in a new perspective is: Ted's car crash was more gruesome than shown and he's in a coma for the rest of the series. In Miracles (S3 ep. 20, we are led to believe that Ted survived and was able to walk away, but in reality, he was pronounced comatose upon arrival to the hospital. After this, his friends become how he sees them and the stories start having themes of embracing life, remembering the highs and lows, and become more outlandish and fantastical. He also inserted himself into stories he heard from friends and family visiting him wishing he could've been there for everyone such as Barney's marriage which didn't end in divorce, Marshall and Lily becoming parents, and Marvin's death. His kids are a pair of angels who made him tell his long story as his ticket to heaven which is why they don't seem to age as it gets more complex. The much better alternate ending represents him accepting death and Tracy as the angel that welcomes him to heaven where he lives the life he was robbed of because of the crash.

Showing Tracy's funeral would've helped SO much. I've always contended that the finale could've been salvageable, at least the Ted part of it, if part of the final montage included the funeral, Ted grieving after, the gang showing up to support him, then slowly losing each member of the gang until it's just multiple shots of Ted and Robin hanging out together. Would've at least helped us to understand that Ted and Robin were falling back into love with each other and now the time is right since they're both at the same place again.

ok before even watching this
1. i'm glad victoria isnt the mother seeing the raw deal Tracey got, being used as a brood sow so ted can have kids
2. 7 seasons as to why robin and ted do not work
3. the canon ending sucks and makes zero sense
4. the last season is all about a marriage that lasts 2-3 years where as we could of used that time to fall even more in love with tracey
5. Still would of laughed if the stripper from season one actually was THE Tracey

The Original is the best here’s why
1. Ted and Robin make a bet or a pack that says when they are both 40 (I think it was don’t quote me on that) and still single they would get married
2. That means it was always going to be Robin at the end
3. The story literally spells it out for you in the first episode that the story is about how Ted is in Love with Robin
If you can’t handle facts then maybe stop liking the show

I defend the canonical how I Met your mother ending just because I feel like Ted and Robin always worked even if they had moved on since season two but I remember a while back you did a video on how I Met your mother’s ending saying that how I Met your father could’ve taken notes to avoid it but then it got cancelled so it would’ve been interesting to see how that would’ve ended had it I’ve got cancelled

I would have written the last season differently. 6 episodes of the wedding and the rest of the episodes on the relationship between Ted and Tracy. The last moments would have bob explain how he met his wife and how great of a woman and mom she was to his kids. The last scene would show Bob Saget getting ready for Tracy's funeral. You hear his kids asking if he is ready. Bob says Yeah and leaves the bedroom. Fade out.

I watched the HIMYM finale much later than when it aired. Little did I know anything of the big storm caused by it.
When I finally watched the final episode, I actually loved every minute of it. I thought this was one of the very few TV series that showed a Perfect Ending.
I didn't feel fooled by the scriptwriters

Honestly, Ted and Robin loved each other but couldn't be together only because they wanted different things in life, they both got everything they wanted AND each other. Its beautiful in its own way. I ain't mad anymore, growing up is realizing this ending, whilst not the thing we were hoping for is a good ending

What risk 9 great seasons. Fantastic acting and please don't change a thing. I love it and re-watch all 9 seasons. The only change I wanted at first watch was for Tracy not to die, but I also loved Ted and Robin and the blue French Horn is classic it is very easy to love How I Met Your Mother.

The alternative finale, where Ted recounts all the moments that led to him meeting Tracy, is honestly much more rewarding and satisfying than the canon ending. Not to mention, the implication that Barney and Robin would eventually reconcile.
reply

They could have made a really sad but touching end with the same mother still dying and Ted ending up being happier alone. Ted was a chronic dater always needing to be with someone but ending up happy but alone could have been incredible.
reply

I disliked the finale we got for the reason they spent all of season 9 revolved around the wedding just ro break up Barney/Robin just one episode later like come on why all that build just to destroy it
reply

They should make a season 10 and 11. Yk actually fleshing out Tracy's character and actually developing Ted and traceys relationship and season 11 developers Tracy's unknown illness
reply

Honestly, like even though I really liked Ted and Robin in the beginning I hate this ending so much. Like no amount storytelling I think can make me OK with it in the end.
reply

The alternative finale the mother is still dead because she dead while he telling the story by the way so theres no way the mother is still alive in The alternative finale,
reply

So selfish Ted who is the creepiest of them all, gets exactly what he wanted, kids & Robin, even though they want different things and are so different. Makes no sense.
reply

I still hate the writers to this day, for ruining Barney's story arc - the only good thing to come out of that finale was the introduction of his daughter Ellie
reply

I actually loved that Tracy was revealed to be the mother. It made a lot of sense since Ted's kids both have dark hair just like Ted and Tracy.
reply

Potentially unpopular opinion. I don't completely hate the ending, it's more the execution of several elements that I hate.

Ripping the rug from under you
Last season was funny but it became a disjunct waste of time for everyone else involved
