This is a great video with lots of good well researched info but I was waiting for the -120 frames per second- line and you totally dropped the ball.
What the hell is -120fps-? Relative to what? My 1080Ti can run Vanilla World of Warcraft or Minecraft in the thousands of frames per second (but my 60hz monitor can only use about 30-60fps because of refresh rates. If I was to run those games at 16k or 32k resolution for no reason what-so-ever (because my monitor can't support such pixel density, so I gain no -effective resolution/visual clarity- my graphics card would probably crawl trying to render everything.
If I take a single cube in a 3D modeling program like Blender with 12 tri/polys and add a sub-divison surface modifier (basically smooths and increasing polycount for higher res models) the polycount will become 48 then 192 then 768 and so on until it reaches hundreds of thousands of polygons and my graphic cards stops being able to keep up with the rendering causing my fps to drop. At a certain point though (around 4-5 subdivisons) the details get too small for the human eye to notice and you don't gain any visual clarity. This is the concept of optimization, what's the fewest number of polygons that give the highest resolution of visual clarity and this number will always be pushed harder.
Frame-rate is an entirely relative concept so saying -120fps- means literally nothing. Like you said it's up to the developer to use the power of the console to achieve their goal. A pixel-art side-scroller doesn't need a heavy GPU to render 3D environments so naturally it will run in the hundreds or thousands of FPS but be capped down to 60-120fps based on consumer monitors. On the other hand, games like Death Stranding are going to continually push the envelope in terms of rendering as hard as possible no matter what the hardware is like so they'll keep pushing resolution and polygon counts until they start dropping below 60fps.
This doesn't even touch on game code being forcefully tied to frame-rates making this statement even more pointless. In games like Fallout 4, the actual speed of the game and physics engine is hard-coded directly to the frame-rate. This means if you uncap your frame-rate and can run the game at 150 or 250fps the game will run at double speed making it nearly unplayable (and faster the higher your fps goes. Your character will run twice as fast, attack twice as fast, so will all the enemies and the physics systems. This is generally a frowned upon practice in game development but A LOT of games are coded this way which is why they forcefully cap your frame-rate to 60fps even if you have an 8k monitor capable of refresh-rates in the 120+ fps range. Even if hardware and consumers can manage hundreds of FPS; most game development won't accommodate them.

Let's be real, quoting framerates and display resolutions separately like that is disingenuous -console war- shenanigans. For those who don't have PC/console specs in their wheelhouse, that 120FPS framerate is definitely going to be for 1080p, which is fantastic if consistent, and everyone would love it. It effectively means more complex scenes without visible stuttering. For 4k, quarter that and add a few feel-good frames. Let's say 120FPS is a hard-coded cap instead of all the GPU is capable of, and 4k gets a generous 45FPS assuming no vsync, which would ideally just nullify those fudge frames and leave you with a -good for most RPGs but kinda gross in a shooter- 30FPS. 8k, while currently not a thing for anyone who doesn't have the last name -Incorporated-, in that case would only be maybe useful for video playback. For hypothetical gaming performance, you can safely assume it'll look the same as 4k due to VRAM limitations meaning the textures couldn't be detailed enough to justify a res bump, and possibly even worse to meet a framerate target, because a slideshow isn't any tastier at 8k.
Honestly, I'm not sure why Microsoft tried to be all sly about that, since if it can do a consistent 4k/30 or even 1080/60 (I mean 60Hz is what nearly every single US TV caps at, it'd destroy every single current console on visuals, and punch as high as most current -gaming- PCs in the popular $700-1, 200 price range. It's all contingent on VRAM, I/O, and a whole bunch of other inside-baseball numbers I don't want to bore anyone with, but it's enough to give me hope.
Bonus paragraph for this comment-novella: As a dated comparison, the Xbox 360 could do 1080p -output- (meaning it was capable of displaying a frame at a crisp 1080p in a time where many televisions could only handle 720p. Most games for the console rendered at 720p, or even 1024x576, and many were capped at 30FPS. I don't recall a single game doing 1080/60. The original Xbox One got way closer, delivering 1080/60 in some games and something between that and 720/60 (often 1080/30) in others, but Microsoft naturally only gave us the good number in their marketing. Basically, we gotta wait for actual games to come out, and for developers to gripe about whatever holds them up.

I liked the way this was presented with the right amount of amused disbelief and detail. I don't see any inaccuracies worth mentioning, either.
Well, I can clarify some. The fact they're using an SSD with what sounds like aggressive custom caching means that load times can drop dramatically. They showed it off by zooming around in Spider-Man at speeds that would have destroyed a modern PS4's illusion of a loaded world with large chunks of empty space or simple crashes. So the -seamless worlds- claim is actually arguably the most legit next-gen benefit of Scarlett--it will be massively easier to make games seamlessly stream content. You could do it in the time it takes to step through a door versus GoW's long tunnel-crouching sequences. And open games like GTAV could remove limits on traversal speeds (now you can steal fighter jets. It IS still on developers to utilize it but it will be much easier to work into games without mapping out elevators/tunnels/other loading screen hiding sections or carefully-balanced open-world streaming options.
They also clearly promised real-time raytracing (as you noted) and that has benefits beside shiny reflections (better-quality shadows, more dynamic global illumination vs Spider-Man's loading screens whenever the time of day changed) but AMD doesn't actually support DXR in Navi so I'm wondering exactly what that claim means. Maybe Scarlett is actually getting Navi 2 before PCs? Wouldn't put it past AMD.

Great video, though you both explained how TF doesn't necessarily mean the end-all be-all statistic to describe performance, then say that MS is suggesting -24 TF in theri system (they are not, but the system could be 12TF and still perform 4x as well as the X1X alongside how much extra stuff is being handled by other chips that support the main processors.
Also, you used in-game scenes to show -raytracing- instead of just referencing NVIDIA RTX raytraced examples. Even that Spider-Man example was from a playable demo, and there are puddles just as large as that throughout the game when its -rainy-. Whether or not the RT will be similar to RTX, or that newer -hybrid- approach that AMD has patented will be interesting to see.
Finally, the 40 times increased performance is referring to loading capabilities, and this is in-line with going from SATA to the newer NVMe PCIe standard for SSD (the connection between the storage and everything else. The number may be accurate compared to say, the original Xbox One, which loads pretty slow compared to XB1X and PS4/Pro.
Thanks again for this video! Also, I wonder if the 120 FPS was thrown out as a first-step to revealing that the next-gen Xbox will have VR, and include 120 FPS native games.

I realised a bit of the way in that most of the stuff would be familiar to PC gamers. Two things stuck out at me. Real time raytracing has already been marketed by nVidia in the 2000 series, and has gotten off to a rocky start. AMD at their Navi launch shrugged off raytracing, as still not being of interest. So Microsoft going, we're using raytracing on Navi, and implying it will be used, seems like it might still be jumping the gun. The other is the 120fps. Yes, but also no. A bit more weight on developers having to sacrifice visual impressiveness to achieve the FPS might be good. It would have been worth mentioning that most TVs probably wouldn't be able to do much with this. It is also an important tie in with variable framerate, which also wouldn't be rolled out in many TVs yet. Curious to see whether the variable frame rate will be AMDs FreeSync, which I believe is an implementation of the DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync. In which case, what does that mean in the HDMI world. Talking about variable framerate immediately after the 120fps segment with some mention of why you might want it more, now that the peak fps is up there.

I'm actually pretty concerned with their -hardware accelerated raytracing- since AMD has not announced anything like that for any of their upcoming cards. Sony has been pretty cagey about their raytracing capabilities too (makes sense since they are also using AMD gpus. This claim seems. difficult to follow through on with where their actual hardware partnerships are at. Nvidia is the only group actually putting RT-dedicated cores onto their cards, but it feels like they've drummed up so much interest that Sony and Microsoft have needed to say -raytracing- during their presentations or risk feeling insufficiently next-gen.

what i want to hear is that real time ray-tracing, 120fps, and 1080p-4k resolution would all be possible at the same. until then, -up to- makes it mean nearly nothing. my 6 year old laptop could get 120fps, playing -thomas was alone- a game only slightly more graphically intense than tetris (significantly less graphically intense than any -recent- version of tetris) and a web browser can display a jpeg in 8k resolution. some minecraft mods can do real-time raytracing, but they'll make most computers chug along down to

At 7: 50 they were talking about the SSD so it is safe to assume they mean 40x the speed of data reads when you compare the SSD in Scarlett (which is probably NVMe based and possibly PCIe 4. 0) to the slow 5400 RPM SATA 2 drives that the Xbox One launched with. Lots of tech terms in my last sentence but basically what it means is that a 40x increase in read speeds from storage compared to the launch Xbox One isn't completely outside the realm of possible.

The fact that they mention SSD in the context of V RAM probably means it will have both SSD and a magnetic drive(for enough storage. And with faster and more actual RAM, with a PCIe interface for the SSD and proper memory management, all this coming together 40x doesn't seem too unbelievable. The current 5400rpm drive is already about 20x slower than fast PCIe-based SSDs and the faster RAM will add to this as well. Calling it BS this early is pretty ignorant.

This was actually pretty informative. It's clear this was mostly just buzzwords and big numbers to hype up people like myself who don't know what most of this meant but it's hard to get hyped up for it when you don't understand what any of the words mean. Now all this video did was make me extremely nervous for the retail price, there's no way this can be affordable.

and xbox scarlett gonna use an apu only an apu is very weak compaire dedicated cpu and dedicated gpu because an apu is cutdown cpu and cutdown gpu on a single die. she said that xbox scarlett will do up to 120 frame per second okay i have to know xbox scarlett will do 120fps at which resolution 360p or 240p sorry for my bad english

According to digitalFoundry, those Spiderman cutscenes and the following gameplay are not prerendered. They just use a very specific cubemaps setup specifically created to match that particular scene. In a sense, the cubemaps are somewhat -prerendered- to simulate approximately what real-time raytraced reflexions would look like.

The thing about support for 8K is that they're not actually thinking were all going to be running this on 8K tvs, but that if this console can manage 8K, 4K shouldn't be a problem at all. It's just them saying -oh you want 4K? - and then making up a number higher than 4 just to exaggerate how easy 4K will be.

Not generally a fan of gaming reviewers and all but I stumbled on this while looking for details about scarlett and ps5 and I loved it. You have an amazing sense of humor and I agree the fluff and buzz words mean little, I just wanted the specs and Microsoft sounded like they were trying to sell me a car instead.

If you release a shiny new anything basically anyone with a lick of gamer in them will buy it - especially if it is the next big console in the Playstation / Xbox range. cool video but ultimately people will buy it regardless of the changes lmao.

I'm no expert so I may be missing something here, but wouldn't 120fps be mitigated by most people's 60hz TV? This is a console, not a PC, it's meant for TV's and I haven't seen many of them over 60hz. Definitely seems more like a market buzz word to me. (Is my PC master race showing guys)

Bit of a correction, the puddles in spider-man were changed from being hand placed to being placed procedurally from that trailer to release, there's nothing pre-rendered going on there. That's literally the only reason why the puddles differ.
