The real reason the Super Mario Bros movie tanked

The Super Mario Bros. movie is famously bad - so bad it killed the hopes of any good video game movie adaptations for YEARS. Or. so they say. But what if Super Mario Bros. wasn't actually that bad? Jenna digs into the history of the Super Mario Bros. movie and gets the answers about why it's so reviled. And why, just maybe, you should watch it for yourself

On censorship in media and games:
The -monkey see, monkey do- explaination as to why everything must be strictly controlled is somewhat lacking.
Question: have you ever watched early cartoons Popeye, Betty Boop, Tom and Jerry, etc?
Did you notice the blatant depiction of violence, how violence and suicide were treated as being hilarious? Did you see the way these cartoons showed guns being fired at random or people being threatened with firearms?
Now I want to know something: do you know the story about kinds in the 1950s who took guns to school and shot everyone?

I feel extremely vindicated as a lifelong Mario Bros movie apologist! I saw it as a very young tot and seeing Yoshi as a Real Dinosaur was a life-altering moment tbh. I loved it; I didn't question why the goombas were like that or why Toad was a busker or why Peach wasn't in it. This video finally got my wife to watch it and HONESTLY the movie has some pretty good social themes (I screamed when Iggy called Koopa -enemy of the proletariat-) and has lots of really cool female characters? Mina, Bertha, Daisy, and the Brooklyn Girls made me the homogay I am today!

I am pretty sure that anyone that makes a video about the original mario movie is going to be someone I want to watch. It's just a wild bit of syncronicity. I am pretty sure I have seen eight peoples personal philosophy on this movie. I liked every one of them. It's not something I expected but it is something I welcome. Roast these goons.

Legitimately knew nothing about this movie before looking it up AFTER this video. I honestly just remembered the Super Mario Bros Super Show from Netflix and thought that's what was being discussed.
To be honest, I see why people hated it. It's pretty clearly -not- a Mario movie, like it claims to be, which tends to color one's vision

reply

I honestly think if it doubled down on its original vision of being for adults then it might-ve ended up being genuinely great. But given what we ended up with I think the fairest assessment it is it's pretty decent but suffers due to being somewhat uncohesive and nonsensical. It deserves its status as a cult classic though

I still stand by my opinion that the SMB movie is good. It's a perfectly fine early 90's action adventure kids movie. It's a terrible adaptation of the source material even by 90's Nintendo standards and it's impossible to deflect criticism based on it's authenticity but yeah for what it was it totally works.

Oh yeah, the same US government which deregulated the market for children's products in the late '80s, just a couple of years later complains that media for the young is too much oriented to consumerism. The combining of neoliberal economics and conservative politics is a funny thing

I saw the movie on home video as a kid, and I thought it was terrible. I hated that Bowser was a human. I hated that the Goombas looked nothing like Goombas. And the story didn't seem anything like a Super Mario type story. I've never rewatched it as an adult and don't plan to.

The movie tanked because they tried to make an -alternative- version of Mario just to keep it cheap, and we the audience noticed that. People usually get angry when they pay to see a certain movie and they get a different thing. It was a bad movie, period.

While I shudder to assign him any credit, I do wonder how much of the reputation for the movie being bad, stems from the Nostalgia Critic Review that could of influenced a lot of people who clearly were never going to watch it themselves.

I really liked this movie as a kid. I was old enough to know it was not a good translation of the games, nor a great movie, but I really liked the super urban-punk aesthetic of the world, the brothers were fun, it was a cool story.
reply

This movie got a new comic book sequel.
I say new because there was an old one from a few years ago but that never got finished.
The link to it's first chapter is available on a website called The Super Mario Bros Movie Archive.

I enjoy 90s Cyberpunk movies. Johnny Mnemonic, Hackers, Mario Bros, etc. All pretty bad in one way or another, but they are exactly what they were trying to be, egdy, grungy, and forward-thinking, and for that, I appreciate them.
reply

I remember seeing the commercial for it as a kid. The more I saw of them, the less it looked like the game I played. I never even asked my parents to go see it. Even as a kid, I could spot trash videogame movies.
reply

I didn't even know how to not enjoy movies at 10yo; this was the movie that taught me. It was terrible and ur a damn liar when u say the critics praised the acting performances. The special effects? Maybe! Bfd
reply

Even as a hardcore Nintendo fan, I enjoy it BECAUSE of how weirdly it uses the source material- it makes it hilarious and thoroughly, genuinely entertaining to me! I have a great time watching this movie every time!
reply

Y'know what? Just for how cheesy, ambitious and genuinely entertaining this film is, it's absolutely one of my favourite films of all time. It really didn't deserve any of the hate it got. I adore it.

I love SMB 93. It's just like you say, Jenna, too weird not to. An unlikely thing to exist especially looking back now from a world where everything Super Mario is so streamlined and the same.

I ran D&D for Senator Lieberman's granddaughter at a fancy arts camp in New York a decade ago.
Which has nothing to do with this video, I just always think of that whenever I see Joe.

reply

I love that movie, regardless how far removed it is from the franchise, and the opinions of others.
It was goofy, but taking itself serious.
I want a pair of those thwamp stompers.

At the height of Mario Mania, people weren't ready for a movie that wasn't a fat guy jumping on turtles for two hours. The movie dared to think outside the question box and be its own thing.
reply

I loved the irony of Doom being mentioned as a Karl Urban vehicle. I mean, even Urban himself probably knew it was as good a vehicle as a Segway the moment he saw the finished product.
reply

I liked it when I saw it years ago. When I was a kid. I thought it was funny and weird. Turns out, as an adult, my child self was right. It's weird and funny. And I like it.
reply

We rented this tape a couple o' times back in the day, and we loved it exactly because it had nothing to do with Mario. It's just weird. Only Millennials get that kinda stuff.
reply

I watched the movie a lot as a kid. It's so weird. I think it's a bad movie with some great acting and cool but very strange visuals. It's hard not to enjoy watching it.
reply

No. It-s not the first movie based on a video game property. The first one is the animated Super Mario Bros movie. Super Mario Bros: The Great Mission To Save Princess Peach.
reply

I thought the SMB movie was the bee's knees when I saw it, it occupied my mind for weeks after seeing it. I was a young child back then, but I thought it rocked.
reply

Thank you, Jenna. SMB: tM was weird, certainly, but it's one of the things I loved about it. As long as I hold its canon separately from the games. :-D
reply

lol i watched the movie myself before i heard of the stigma around it and it-s definitely a bad movie but its one of those bad movies u want to watch
reply

I loved this live version way more than the cartoon adoption. pretty sure it did bad because it didn't feel like a kids show as much as what's out now.
