I wish I'd thought to record when I rescued my cat. It was very similar to this. Bringing him to the door over a series of nights, with me laying in the doorway with the door cracked a bit wider each time, until eventually he let me pet him

Beautiful story. Good people with loving intentions, and a great ending. But let me add one more wonderful observation, both families have special dogs who also welcomed him in. And the children were pretty great too.
