In the house another dog had just delivered puppies four weeks before this.
It’s hard to say why, but the retriever wanted to come close to one of the puppies, and the mother dog, who had delivered, went to protect her puppy, and snapped at the golden retriever. The golden retriever ended up, biting the eye area of the puppy.
Never, and I repeat, never trust even a golden retriever to be around a young child alone, or even another dog, such as a puppy. They cannot defend themselves if something were to happen.

Amazing, amazing dog breed. Just please don't allow the child to hold the leash, if it gets entangled and the dog sprints, it's horrifying how the little one will be dragged.

Having a family dog has a calming effect on children, I think. They never feel alone because the dog is licking them or sleeping near them. Dogs love children.

Growing up my neighbor who was my babysitter had a Doberman Pincher, once I was an adult I had a bullmastif and my brother a pit bull. Never had a problem.
