The bad thing is them leaving the fishing line attached to him he's going to get caught up on something or get wrapped around his body. I know he tried his best to help the fish and that's a great thing to do. But honestly this is one of the reasons why you need to have a diving knife with you whatever you go even if you're just going snorkeling. I do hope the little puffer fish is still alive and it's swimming around happy and healthy. But is that fishing line starts wrap around him it's going to get worse for him in the long run. I would say he probably should have left the puffer fish there or had his girlfriend go back and get a knife so they can cut fishing line. That or try to find a piece of trash or debris in the ocean to help cut it. Aluminum can a glass bottle something

Great job BUT, you don't dive with a diver's knife strapped to your leg Who the hell taught you how to open water dive I've been diving since 1964, and I NEVER dive without one! What if it was YOU that got tangled in the line instead of the fish Go buy yourself a sturdy divers knife with a sharp, pointed blade and a serrated back edge. It'll come with a leg strap. Get one for your dive partner too. Dont dive without it! It's not only great to have in an emergency but its a very useful prying tool should you need one! Oh, and I also recommend investing in a pair of light divers gloves. If you're gonna dive in the tropics they're a must for dealing with unexpected stuff that can cut you, and you do NOT want to bleed in the water!

Awesome.
It breaks my heart to see animals hurt because of negligent or careless people. I live in the desert. a desert that feeds free ranging cattle that supply our food chain. It's amazing how many party balloons leave the city, go up just out of sight, leak some helium, and fall to the desert. I find them often. But sometimes a beautiful little calf will find one and eat it. They are attracted to the pretty colors. Wildlife too. Releasing balloons at a party, or other event kills livestock and wildlife. It's careless, it's cruel.

Wow, I was coming to see if anyone was amazed that the puffer fish did defend himself. I was nervous thinking, Please don't puff up. Then I read the comments. Sheesh, I've never seen a Dodo comment section so negative. He tried to save a venomous fish for crying out loud! I was hooked as a kid really deep. It took my parents a long time to get it out because of the barbs: and I was on land. He was being tossed by the waves and had to be careful of the fish's teeth and the poison.

How did he risk his life exactly And how did he help the fish if he left the hook piercing their mouth and dragging a long fishing line that can get tangled and caught in all sorts of things All he kept saying was how he was a saviour and how the fish thanked him when he did the bare minimum, made sure to record it for internet virality and profit gain, while the fish just wanted to get away from them. They won't be able to feed so this grand heroism is very short lived.

See, this diver is ME! My family always says If a dog with three legs, no tail, and all beat up came to Cheryl, SHE will take him. That's me. I found a dying baby skunk, lying in the pouring rain once. I put it in a box and took it out of the rain. It squirted the smell in the box, yuk. But, I couldn't leave him in the pouring rain.

Pufferfish have a potent nerve toxin called tetrodotoxin, which can only be extracted from the liver. It's not a fish that will envenomate you in any type of way as the video would have you believe. I would be careful with those chompers though. They have been known to take off fingers in the past.

Love how everyone in the comments is like, You did a good deed! Well, if they truly had, they'd called around and found the local wildlife and marine care agency to have them come out and help the puffer. Rather than LETTING IT GO WITH THE HOOK STILL IMBEDDED. Yeah, right. Real kind.
reply

Well done trying to help the puffer however it needed the hook taken out although not an easy task, next time you dive might be worthwhile taking some pliers and a knife in the chance there is more fishing line and hooks about. Thanks for caring and trying to clean up!

If this wasn't a complete fabricated story for the sake of social media, I don't know what is. Did nothing but took all the credit. Looked me right in the face and asked for help he doesn't know I'm helping him at least get your fabricated narrative straight
reply

Aww too bad you couldn't get the hook out Thank you for helping him even a little. Fishing is so cruel. I find it so unattractive when dudes pose with a fish they caught and they're all smiling while the fish is suffering in pain unable to breathe

The biologist Jonathan Balcombe has published a fascinating, bestselling book about the intellectual and emotional complexity of fish called What a Fish Knows. Having read it, I'm never going to look at fish the same way again.

Whoever put in that you can get poisoned by the spikes is an idiot. You have to eat the puffer fish and puncture a certain gland. You call leaving that fish with that hook in its mouth a save Low standards for success I guess
reply

You may not know the biting power of pufferfish, but they have a strong biting force that can break human fingernails. They usually eat crabs and shellfish, but most of the time they end up breaking fishing hooks.
reply

However there were 2 of you and 1 of you could of gone to get the knife. You need to carry your equipment down with you knowing you going down there
Yes you did help the fish for the moment.

reply

So. He messed up by allowing THAT much line to remain, but at least the puffer is able to swim now. he could have made the hook push through and not give it a tougher time to eat or live.
reply

Great that they helped him get free but sad that he didn't get the hook out. I hope the fish doesn't get caught up on something else, and is able to eat with that hook in it's mouth.
reply

Guys you did an amazing thing there. May you be blessed with everything you need for the future. We (the world) need so many kindred souls like you. Peace be upon all today
reply

Pufferfish have a very strong biting power, so the fishing hook may have been stuck in the wrong place. Furthermore, the poor fish struggled and got tangled in other fishing lines.
reply

These guys are fairly intelligent and will recoginze if you're trying to help. Notice he is not puffing up either. Maybe it's because he is too exhausted but I don't think so.
