If you see a young squirrel on the ground, it's very likely the mother will come get him/her. T. Leave the baby where it is, keep pets away, & just keep an eye on the little one from a safe distance. If it's particularly cold or wet weather you can provide little one with a warm blanket or box (with blanket. A gently warm--not hot! --hot water bottle with a blanket on top will help them retain body heat.
Best not to handle little one, but if you absolutely have to, that's ok--it's not true that a Mama will not take in her baby again if it smells like humans. NOT TRUE. Generally the only reason a Mama will abandon her baby is if it's injured or sick.
There are situations where baby squirrels will need extra help: if it's particularly young (esp eyes closed) & Mom isn't showing up; if it approaches you, which is often a sign the mother has abandoned it; or if you can see it appears sick or injured.
If over time the mother doesn't return, the most important steps are to get little one warm, & call a wildlife rehabber asap. Hopefully they can take the young squirrel for rehab, & give you instructions in the meantime. Don't try to give them food or water right away, especially if they're cold.

An absolutely beautiful video to start off the morning. My grandma found a baby squirrel that fell out of the tree and broke his leg and nursed him back to health! He kept coming in through the dog door every now and then so she made a whole house for him inside it was so great seeing him laying inside his little space when we came over. great times

Squirrels are such adorable animals, and can be very friendly too. There used to be a blonde squirrel who came up to my house every day and would take nuts very gently out of my hand and she made her way into the hearts of nearly everyone in the neighborhood. Sadly she died a few years ago from a huge abscess on her mouth. RIP Blondie

I'm actually surprised they didn't allow them some practice in a tree or similar environment before releasing them into the wild. They would've naturally had some of that practice if they'd grown up with their mom in the wild, right It just seems like an odd choice, I guess.
Squirrels are definitely cute, though, lol.

This woman did the right thing! She saved this baby squirrel from a horrible fate! But she knew that he had to go back to the wild, around other squirrel's and other species! It was the best idea! That's where he belongs! Now Everyone is happy!

We've raised a couple hundred of these little ones. Naturally, we lost some along the way but the successful ones have gone on to make plenty of cute babies just like this little guy. Some of our girls would even bring their babies to show them off.

Young squirrel just moved into my backyard a few weeks ago. I don't let him get too close (don't want him too comfortable with people, but he loves to just hang with me. Especially under the awning when it's raining.

Thank you for the update, The Dodo! The heartwarming story of a woman's kindness and care towards a tiny, helpless creature truly warms the soul and serves as a reminder of the power of compassion.

Do these poor critters know how to find food and water in the wild Obviously they were provided for when they were with humans, but do they know how to forage on their own

I’m amazed seeing the variety of squirrels on Dodo. Our squirrels are a dark copper brown. Tail included. No stripes no tufts on ears no other color but copper brown.

I have rescued two baby squirrels. They are some of the most affectionate animals ever. So sweet and never a dull moment.
