And the drivers he was runner up to are considered by many the greatest, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Jimmie Johnson.
The best example of his greatness is in 1998.
In 33 races that season he had a phenomenal 26 top 10 finishes, of which 22 of those were top 5 finishes, and 7 wins overall.
The problem Jeff Gordon.

Yeah! Dang right it's Marino! Watching him play was like watching Michael Jordan play basketball, very entertaining. I knew he was the best passing quarterback ever and was very sad that he and the Dolphins never won a super bowl. Also, Sir Charles Barkley would be my number 2 pick. Charles Barkley might not have wanted to be a role model, but he grew into just that.

The biggest tragedy of Griffey is he not only never won a ring, but never even played in a WS despite being on a team with all-time greats at SP (Johnson, SS(ARod, DH(E Martinez) and solid pieces in Buehner and T Martinez.
Adding insult to injury the year after he was traded the M’s won a record 116 games and still didn’t make the WS

Please do greatest athletes who never won the Olympic Gold Medal. I can give you Michelle Kwan (Figure Skating) & Alicia Sacramone and/or Chellsie Memell in womens artistic gymnastics. You can go from there. And yes they won medals but not the gold.
