I feel like fondant is mostly for showing off. If the cake is gonna be on display for an event or a party, then sure, go ahead and use fondant to make an impressive looking cake with all the colours and shapes. (Also, I'm pretty sure fondant helps to lock he moisture in the cake so if it's gonna be on display for a long time, it is a good choice for the cake) But let's admit it, fondant doesn't taste that good and most people prefer to eat cream icing than fondant on top of their cake. So if you're making the cake for simple home party or get together, I don't think your cake needs fondant. So yeah, I agree with Claire, forget about it.

Speaking as a building contractor and good cook but lousy baker, Im certain that a good concrete finisher or drywall finisher could do a great job on all that spatula work. And that swooshy stuff on the carrot cake would be second nature to a good plasterer or stucco mason. Id never thought of how similar cake decorating and some building trades are until she was talking about knowing when to stop and not spoiling the work youve already done when icing the first cake. Made me think of troweling a concrete slab. As someone who always screws it up Im amazed at the skill and finesse of an expert.

OMG Shades of CIA Baking and Pastry or Le Cordon Bleu, hahahahaha. nice refresher and a simple series for those that would like, although most are too lazy if it will take more than 30 minutes to make but we watched this after 3 AM and recounted our culinary school and restaurant adventures. It's unfortunate that all food shows have been dumbed down, they used to be better at the very beginning and now are used for mostly food porn and people don't plan on making most of the recipes. people eat junk. The icing looks like the flooded cookies type

Wow These five cake-baking and decorating lessons are now my favorite all-time youtube videos. (Is that crazy, or what) So informative, yet such a low-key pleasant presentation. Everyone in the kitchen seems to be having a great time. (It makes me want to work there) I loved it when Claire couldn't stop laughing at the toppling piece of carrot cake. Anyway, I really, really enjoyed these videos and will get to work on one of the three cakes tomorrow. (I promise)Keep up the good work.

This these are not cakes, they are massive editable edifices. Hysterical ending when that two ton 3 layer carrot layer cake slice fell over while she was talking about how she hopes this help those who were initially intimidated by baking, to go for it. As that slice, slowly falls, talk about timing. Epic. I laughed so hard. This is the funniest program on YouTube, and it's a cooking show Lol.

I've tried fondant before and I hate it every time. It tastes like what I can only imagine sweet silly putty would taste like. I've watched every episode of this series (and your Chef Makes Gourmet. series. I love baking and I gotta say, you really did a phenomenal job here. I learned so much, which is always my goal in life. Thank you.

Homemade fondant is actually tasty. Just melt marshmallows and butter together, then mix and let set in fridge. After it's set and not all melty you'll knead it with powdered sugar until not sticky but be sure that it's not dry. It tastes like marshmallow which is loved by everyone.

Love the fact that Chris says he takes off most of the frosting when he eats the cake Don't get me wrong, I like frosting, but after the first initial bite to taste it all together, I scrape off most of the frosting and just that little smear is enough. Glad to see I'm not alone

Growing up my mom decorated cakes and her secret was to use paper towels to smooth down the icing so the little dot texture would leave barely there designs that really made for a cool effect. People were convinced she'd spent hours piping each tiny dot individually.
