A profile of 2014 Ruth Fertel Keeper of the Flame Award winner Goren Avery of Highlands Bar & Grill in Birmingham, Alabama. MySisterIsAFoodie: I happen to be one of those people who prefers relatively cold and professional service. Don't ask me how my day is, don't small talk to me, don't entertain me, just be efficient. I actually hate when people in the service industry are too kind/nice. I prefer my Uber driver not talking to me at all other than introductory Hello and in conclusion Have a good day. I don't like waiters/waitresses chatting with me. I don't like delivery people having small talk while they run my card. I DON'T LIKE INTERACTIONS MUCH. I am sure I can't be the only person who feels this way. So this would actually be my nightmare of a dining experience. I still like the human aspect of service (I would rather have a waiter/waitress. I wouldn't wanna just pick up food off of idk, a rotating conveyor belt, but I would much rather little to no small talk. Great service. A solitary smile at the end of service. Maximum efficiency (articulate and confident responses to any questions asked, knows menu well, attentive to wine and water refills. To me that would be my ultimate service experience and deserving of a generous tip. I guess I hope I can be super rich one day and go all Steve Harvey with my life. Like IF YOU SEE ME IN THE HALLWAY, DO NOT TALK TO ME!

We are too often obsessed with labeling some jobs good jobs and others bad jobs. How many people have gone into finance for a high paycheck, but burn out in four or five years? How many software engineers have prestige and salary but little actual fulfillment. Every job has someone out there who will be great at it and enjoy it. Every person has something they could be great at. Don't let others define success for you. A year of doing things you hate for a million can't compare with a lifetime of doing what you love for a hundred.

This man is such a sweetheart, and you can tell he loves his job so much. I don't blame him for thinking that about the younger kids - A lot of people can't find jobs in their fields are now stuck getting temp jobs like this in the meantime, and aren't actually invested. Hopefully the economy gets better and the people who love the work are able to find the jobs that are right for them.

A lot of people my age could learn a lot from this guy. Everyone in their 20's seems to want fast money, and aren't willing to put up with slight discomfort to progress up the ladder. This guy, however, has been basically doing the same thing for a super long time and loves it and he's basically mastered the art of showmanship. What a guy.

Wow. What a fantastic piece, I want to see more videos of this nature. I am, a lot of us probably are, a kitchen professional - this video elucidates not only a side of the business unfamiliar to me, but also perhaps a side of life. Such a rich character in this dude. Got me thinking it's time to move to front of the house!

There's a reason high-end restaurants have waiters like this guy. T&A won't cut it when you're dealing with a high-end clientelle. The staff need to be knowledgeable, personable, and be able to talk to all classes of society.

What a wonderfully charming man. You can tell he takes great pride in his job and lives for the warm, playful interaction with the guests- I'm sure he's well appreciated and loved by the loyal customers of that restaurant.

Y'know, I can't count the number of times a member of wait staff has hung out by the table too long, leaning in on what was supposed to be a semi private conversation. This fellow seems like he would know better.
