Sometimes the food wishes I get take years, or even a decade, before they make an appearance on the channel. Other times, as was the case with this amazing Malaysian Flatbread (Roti Canai, they are granted almost instantaneously. Julie: The roti looks delicious! That dip. you totally lost me at coconut milk. I don't like coconut anything. Could someone point me in the direction of a similar dip that doesn't use it, please? Or maybe a good substitute ingredient instead please? Thanks. Really love the recipes Chef John.

I've tried canned coconut for the first time, I did not like it as much as freshly grated and squeezed ones. The flavor of cooked coconut oil is off putting. The flavor of fresh coconut cream/milk has none of that smell. We usually associate cooked coconut oil smell to something you used for your skin, hair or to cure some illness. lol

Another way to make roti canai becomes a round flatbread is after you stretch it out thinly, instead of folding gather the sides to center to make it as a long rope, pick one end and roll it around to make it look like cinnamon roll. Then flatten it gently and fry.

The good thing about roti canai is how well you can freeze them and reheat in an oiled pan. You can easily get them from the frozen section in your Asian markets. Wont compare to the ones made on the spot but still a good try if you want to experience roti canai

You made it looks so easy to make the roti canai and I believe possibly the simplest recipe I have found on the internet. In the meantime I would go to my nearest Asian store and buy Roti Paratha for 2 until I have the energy and time to knead

Well done Chef John. It's notoriously hard to make roti canai at home because of all the space needed to flip/toss the dough, but you did great under the circumstances. Barely a hole in the dough too. 11/10 from a Malaysian.

It looks pretty good! If you re ever in Malaysia at a mamak stall, ask for roti empat segi (lit. square bread) if you want freshly made roti canai. The round ones are mass produced and may or may not arrive crispy.

Just as bagles, donuts, congee or muffins are the go to breakfast food items for some cultures, roti canai (or as I call it, roti prata) is the go-to for people in Malaysia. I love having it with fish or lamb curry.

Hey John, if you get a chance please watch Interstellar and pay close attention to the robots. They rule and youre like TARS. That probably doesn't make any sense to anyone but me

Hey Chef - why don't you get one of those fancy induction stoves? I saw that onion fly off and it went down under the grate, presumably. Those flat-tops are much easier to keep clean!
