Sometimes, you've got to do what you've got to do. Had a miserable headache all day long, needed to fix grandkids something for dinner. Normally, I cook from scratch. Last night they had Kielbasa and instant mashed potato soup. I added more water to a package of instant potatoes, added shredded cheese and fresh chives. Added a veggie and they had dinner. Not the chicken soup I made Mon from bone broth and organic chicken, but they didn't go to bed hungry because I had a blinding headache. They live with me during the week, so sending them home wasn't an option. As for him just following the directions on the box, it's amazing how many people don't bother to read directions any more.

I've used the same brand of instant potatoes, and although they really can't compare to my favorite recipe of homemade mashed potatoes, they do taste good. There are times when you can make everything from scratch, and times you cant. When you can't, you look for shortcuts that work. And, there are times when I'm just cooking for myself and my dog, and he will eat anything, so the only person I need to satisfy is me, and these instant potatoes really do taste good. I use more butter and milk, and less water -- and diced garlic. Gotta' have garlic.

I disliked the video, but to be fair I should explain why. it's not because it was sponsored, but because I didn't learn anything from it. I watch your videos because they teach me something I can go out and try. this one just followed the package instructions. Instructions specifically for a product I can't get in my country. I would have hit 'like' if there was at least a second element to the dish. but i guess that was probably against the sponsorship agreement. My 'dislike' was my opinion. this message is my support. Love your shit

No Chef John you are not The Hoe of Poe for simply for taking a sponsor. Do you really think I peel spuds on my back-country trips? Or carry that extra 10 pounds in our travel trailer? No I couldn't carry fresh spuds and Bushmills after all. I wouldn't open a bag of Idahoan's for Thanksgiving dinner (unless I am in the back-country that day (served with grouse and chanterelles. Instant mashed potatoes has it's place in my kitchens and backpack. My opinion is, just don't make instant mashed potatoes because you are lazy that day. Cheers,

Ok so a departure from John's usual offerings, and yes this ep was of little value to me. However when I consider the immense entertainment, the mood uplifts and cooking knowledge John has given me over sooo many eps - hey I'll be staying right here. Oh, and the fact that a few of you decry chef J earning some income from a processor? Yep, be outraged. and perhaps demand a refund of all the cash he's billed ya for the content you've watched and enjoyed. See how you are? Nick. [fwiw -neither sponsored nor sponsoring]

Chef John, Idahoan is the best brand of instant mashed potatoes. You got that part right. However, there is a way to make them better. I call this the unhealthy version, but the correct scientific term is yummy. Here's what I do: I follow the package directions, except that I double or triple the butter. Then I add a good dose of sour cream and/or parmesan cheese. I might even throw in some cheddar for good measure, if I feel so inclined. The result is a guilty pleasure that really lives up to the name.

Attention lesser YouTube content makers: THIS is how you do a sponsored video and still keep your integrity. Chef John made sure to put the disclaimer up front so we knew immediately that this was an ad. He very clearly explained it further in the narration, and he was neither fawning nor dismissive of the product. He treated it fairly and it came across in a positive light. The clip was informative and fun without being heavy-handed. Very classy as always.

I'll be honest, I like these as well. If I want real potato, I want it some version of baked. I also like to add a little sour cream or creme fraiche for just a little more depth. Honestly instant mash are one of the few instant foods where prepared right in a blind taste test most people could never tell the difference. Also Up voted to help counter the foodie snobs who are pretending they don't eat these as well just because you did a sponsored video.

I honestly think you should do more of these. I trust your expertise so if you have a trick for saving time every now and then I'd love to know about. Also, I think you should make another video with your instant mashed potato coating, like you used for your onion rings. Something like Hey since you all went out and bought instant mashed potatoes, lets make the best tater tots you've ever tried. Also you can have Idahoan sponsor it again: )

I make my mashed potatoes by boiling whole potatoes, with skin on (adds texture, flavor, and vitamins. Then I mash them up (with the skin, add cream cheese, a little milk, real butter, garlic powder and salt and pepper, and they come out super delicious every time. Hardly any labor at all to make them since you skip the peeling step. I'll give these instant potatoes a try and see if they're as good as they claim it to be. Thanks for sharing
