Fried Bologna Banh Mi Bites

These fried bologna bánh m bites might just be the best appetizer at your Super Bowl party. The contrast between rich, crispy edged bologna atop soft baguette, raw-and-crispy marinated veggies, and the spicy, sweet sauce is incredible. I like to say that cooking is about contrast, and this is the perfect one-bite example. First, I'm seriously not trying to rain on anyone's parade here. My dad used to buy bologna for sandwiches all the time when I was a kid. The very smell of the stuff was absolutely nauseating. The list of foods I refuse to eat is an extremely short one but baloney is definitely on that list. So I just watched this video, and imagine I'm replacing the bologna with some good honey cured ham, and I'm back in business.

As a kid we ate many a plain bologna sandwich on Wonder Bread, with OM bologna of course. My cousins fried their bologna, and when I saw it I was surprised and amazed. Now as adult, once in a great while I'll buy bologna to fry with sunny side up eggs. But what to do with that extra bologna Now I know! Thanks, CJ.

What game
Either way, love Banh Mi's! Got a nice little spot less than a mile from the house called Pho Eva and I regularly get their traditional sandwich. With pate, grilled pork, ham, and bologna! Of course with all the accoutrements of the veggies.
Would like to try this appetizer version!

I usually follow Chef John's recipes faithfully the first time but this one invites experimentation from the start.
How about using some braunsweiger spread under the mayo to simulate the pate I have enjoyed in so many banh mi sandwiches over the years.

Great idea! Except hoisin and sriracha do not belong on a bahn mi. But liver pate does! Switching out the mayo for pate will both improve the flavor and be more faithful to the original. Spam instead of bologna might be an upgrade, too.

This is what happens when your half watching. When I saw the bread with the housing mayo, I first thought it was peanut butter! But since I know how good peanut butter is with fried bologna, I thought that would be really tasty, too!

Banh Mi typically have lightly pickled carrots and daikon. You’ll get some of that flavor with the rice vinegar, but making these pickled veggies is super easy (and they aren’t just for Banh Mi. Plenty of recipes on YT and elsewhere.

Anything that has fried baloney in it is a good thing. Btw, I could knock out the Oscar Meyer jingle at any time of any day. its been ingrained in my head since I was a little kid in the 70's. Now Im thinking about re-watching Mad Men.

My bologna has a first name, it's O-S-C-A-R, my bologna has a second name, it's M-E-Y-E-R, Oh I love to eat it everyday, and if you ask me why I'll say, cause Oscar Meyer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A! From 1973 my friend.

Life is about contrast. Art is about contrast. We all will live another day with Chef John's recipes and ideas. Thank you for years of feeding and ideas, Chef John. You are a good human being, sharing and producing food recipes.

OK. .. Did. .. Did I see Chef John pop those edges of carrot and non-uniform pieces of Daikon radish into his mouth! How very special that makes him if true! It sure looked like that kind of motion to me.

I fry my salami this way but I never thought of adding vegetables. I put some romano on the slices and the cheese melts. I usually eat it with crackers but sometimes, if I am desperate I put it up some noddles.

What kind of pan is that I love the aesthetic of a carbon steel skillet and would like to have more of it in my kitchen. just not more carbon steel. I'm good on those: )
[edit] this is such a cool idea!

Oh my God. totally grew up on fried bologna sandwiches. That's all we used to make, especially when your parents are working and you let yourself in. What did they used to call those latch key kids

There's a restaurant 5 minutes from my house called Bahn Mi Bites after its specialty dish. The Bites look very much like this but they use the Vietnamese read and white hams and pork floss.

Don't you live in the San Francisco area You got to be a 49ers fan. You and Chef Tom from All Things Barbeque should do a collaboration for Kansas City v. San Francisco.

I live in the UK, so i will have to adapt. Mortadella instead of American bologna, and perhaps pickled onion instead of the daikon. but these sound amazing!
